A visit to Bourton House Garden on the last day of the meteorological summer. It was a warm lunchtime / afternoon for late September 2020.
It is an award winning three acre garden surrounded by a 18th century Manor House. The site includes a Tithe Barn dating to the 16th century, which is now a tea room. The house and garden has had several owners over the centuries.

Manor House. Early C18, rebuilt on foundations of late C16 house,
from which the cellars remain. C19 extension and conservatory.
Rectangular plan with corners extended out from both wall faces to
form engaged square 'towers'. Small C19 bathroom extension right
of right-hand 'tower'. C19 conservatory attached to left of rear
left 'tower'. Ashlar with slate roof, limestone gable end coping
and ashlar stacks. Facade: 2 storeys and attic lit by four 2-
light dormers with C20 casements. Cellar forms projecting plinth
on which the later facade was built. Symmetrical facade: 1:5:1-
windowed;.18-pane sashes. Wide glazing bars to ground floor sashes
except those lighting towers. All sashes with moulded architraves
and bull-nosed sills. String between ground and 1st floor windows
becomes band to either side of central doorway. Parapet with
moulded coping and string. Triangular pediment within parapet
supported by Ionic pilasters set-on from projecting towers.
Central 12-light part-glazed door up 7 steps. Moulded segmental
pediment supported by fluted Ionic pilasters over. Cellar lit by
2-light stone-mullioned casements with leaded lights. Ovolo-
moulded mullions to blocked cellar window of left 'tower'. Roof
comprises 3-parallel ridges with large square gable end stacks with
moulded caps at the end of each ridge. Saddleback gable coping.
Interior: C18 open well staircase with thin turned, wooden
balusters. Some panelling reused from C16 house, some C18
panelling also. Wood from doors of C16 house reused in doors to
upper floor. Limited interior inspection. Subsidiary features: 7
semi-circular steps flanked by C18 wrought iron railings with
scroll decoration and urn finials. (Country Life, 1943).

Managed to grab a quick shot of this coping with the complex business of negotiating the platform change coming south from Inverness heading for Darlington. From Inverness the train was running late from the start, kicked off all non-Ediburgh bound passengers at Aveimore to allow a faster transit by missing stopping at intervening stations. Even so arrived in Edinburgh 50 minutes late. I missed my connection, everyone upset...
The Station in named in honour of Sir Walter Scott's Novel: Waverley or 'Tis Sixty Years Since, published in 1814 it was Sir Walter's first work of fiction though it was some years before he admitted authorship. Waverley has never out of print .

A Joseph Hamblet blue-black 180 degree coping brick, dated. as is common with these, here, 1897.
The Hamblet works in West Bromwich, was founded in 1851 when Joseph Hamblet acquired part of the Piercy estate at Ireland Green, becoming the largest brickworks in this area of West Bromwich. The firm specialised in blue bricks, but produced many other types as well. In 1898, four years after Hamblet's death, it became Hamblet's Blue Brick Co Ltd. The firm closed down in 1915 and the estate was sold off in 1919.

Three pages of adverts from the "Compendium" of 1909 and showing the various products of the famous J. C. Edwards of Ruabon in North Wales. The company existed from 1903 until 1956 and was one of a number of such companies, manufacturing bricks, terracotta and tiles that exploited the exploit the natural clay beds, and materials associated with the local coal industry; Ruabon is still famous for the deep red 'quarry' tiles that are produced in much reduced numbers.
In a way we see Edwardian architecture as often being 'fussy' to modern tastes but one has to marvel at the range of products seen here that were decorative as well as functional. Many miles of 'better quality' British homes of the period still sport such products on homes, roofs, and garden walls. There are a wealth of special bricks, such as for inset panels, and items such as chalk rail tiles for school rooms. There is also an immense range of pier caps and copings in red buff or golden buff terra cotta.
This thing could be made to actually fit a side pull brake, wheel and tire without having to take the bridge out of the fixture.

Nina (9 jaar) woont met haar vader en moeder in Gbanga, Bong County. Ze is enig kind en een echt moederskind. Haar vader Emanuel is leraar Engels en moeder Yasmin zorgt voor haar dochter. Nina is dol op school en spelen met haar vriendinnen, maar het allerliefst leest ze een boek. .

Ebola heeft een grote impact op het gezin. Emanuel raakte zijn baan kwijt toen de scholen noodgedwongen moesten sluiten, Nina kon niet meer naar school. Uit angst dat Nina besmet zou raken met ebola, besloten Emanuel en Yasmin om hun dochter binnen te houden. Al weken lang kon het meisje geen kant op en sleet haar dagen met boeken lezen en haar moeder helpen. .

Twee weken geleden werd Nina ziek. Ze kreeg koorts en werd opgenomen in Phebe Hospital*. Haar ebolatest was negatief, dus ze werd opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Tijdens het inbrengen van een infuus zo’n 1,5 week na haar opname begon ze opeens hevig te bloeden. Dit alarmeerde de verpleegkundigen en ze werd onmiddellijk in isolatie geplaatst ter observatie. Het konden immers alsnog de symptomen van ebola zijn. .

Nina bracht 3 angstige dagen door in de isolatie-afdeling voordat haar ebolatest wederom negatief uitwees. Haar moeder week geen seconde van het ziekenhuis. Haar vaste plek was een steen, net aan de andere kant van het hek. Nina zat zo veel mogelijk buiten, zodat ze haar moeder kon zien en met haar kon praten. Het was een kwelling voor Yasmin dat ze haar dochter niet kon vasthouden en troosten. Nina vond de verpleegkundigen in hun beschermende pakken eng, want volgens haar waren het verkleedde geesten. Bovendien miste ze haar ouders enorm. .

Toen duidelijk werd dat Nina geen ebola had, mocht ze naar huis. Haar kleding moest ze achterlaten, dus Save the Children gaf haar nieuwe kleren en schoenen. De verpleegkundigen adviseerde Yasmin om haar dochter zo veel mogelijk te knuffelen en haar omgeving te vertellen dat er bij Nina geen sprake is van ebola, om stigmatisering te voorkomen. .

Nina is nog steeds erg zwak en de toekomst is onzeker voor het gezin. Er komt al maanden geen brood op de plank en het gezin zit financieel aan de grond. Er is amper nog geld om eten te komen. Daarom ontvangen ze voedselpakketten van Save the Children, want het is belangrijk dat Nina weer aansterkt en gezond wordt. .

Het ziet er naar uit dat de scholen in januari wellicht weer open gaan, maar het is allerminst zeker dat Nina dan weer in de schoolbanken kan. Haar ouders hebben niet de middelen om het schoolgeld te betalen en dat zou dramatisch zijn voor Nina’s toekomst. .

Gelukkig is het virus het huis van deze familie vooralsnog voorbij gegaan, maar hun verhaal laat zien dat ebola op veel verschillende manieren levens verwoest en dat er hulp nodig zal blijven, ook als de epidemie voorbij is. .

* Phebe Hospital verloor in de eerste weken na de ebola uitbraak 6 verpleegsters aan het virus. De dokter overleefde ebola en werd door President Obama ontvangen in het Witte Huis. Het ziekenhuis sloot uit angst voor meer besmettingen. Daarmee verdween de reguliere gezondheidszorg volledig uit het district. Vrouwen ontvingen geen prenatale zorg en moesten noodgedwongen thuis bevallen zonder de hulp van een verloskundige. Patienten met andere ziektes, zoals malaria, ontvingen geen medische zorg, waardoor het sterftecijfer steeg. Save the Children bouwde, op verzoek van de lokale overheid, een ebola behandelcentrum (EBC). Deze wordt gerund door het IMC. Twee dagen nadat het EBC in gebruik werd genomen, kon Phebe Hospital weer open voor de reguliere gezondheidszorg. .

Dress gently and in layers. Wear common fibres. Synthetic fibres trap heat and sweat throughout a hot blaze, making this symptoms considerably more uncomfortable.

I think no one is going up or down the mountain for a few days. There's food in the fridge, plenty of firewood, and lots of furry little loves to keep me company in front of the fire in between romps in the snow. What more could I want?

The finest #concretebowl was opened by FK-ramps team a few days ago in our hometown - St.Petersburg! This space appears to be the first bowl in Russia to have original concrete coping. We consider this project a great present for the skill improvement and future extreme sports promotion in our country.

Скейт парк МЕГА Дыбенко: Предыстория проекта
До недавнего времени экстремальная инфраструктура Санкт-Петербурга могла похвастаться лишь редкими заголовками об открытии бетонных парков от FK-ramps. За последнее время наша компания построила два бетонных скейт парка для родного города. Санкт-Петербургу требовалась современная площадка для тренировок спортсменов в дисциплине пул. Благодаря гражданской инициативе райдеров, правительство Петербурга предприняло попытку создания городского боула в начале 2018 года.
Проект бетонного скейтпарка на Железноводской улице Васильевского острова был создан нашей компанией при тесном взаимодействии с инициативными спортсменами. К большому сожалению, строительство пула было провалено “голодным”, некомпетентным подрядчиком, выигравшим конкурс на строительство площадки.
На момент проведения закупки, всем стало понятно, что 2018 год не принесет райдерам Санкт-Петербурга радостных новостей об открытии бетонного боула на ВО. Опасения подтвердились! Халтурщики-общестроители попытались набрызгать полусухую стяжку в кривую опалубку чаши пула на Васильевском. Халтурщики не удосужились уделить внимание финишингу фигур, тем самым подведя свою историю к расторжению контракта на строительство.
К счастью, фиаско на Васильевском стало благодатной почвой для инициативы социально-ответственного бизнеса.
Потребность экстрим-сообщества в полноценном пуле была поддержана руководством ТРК Мега Дыбенко!
На начальных этапах было принято решение проектировать глубокий боул с бетонным коупингом, взяв за основу лучшие образцы подобных площадок на Западе.
Возникло множество вопросов, касаемо насыщения участка проектирования. Нам пришлось соблюсти тонкий баланс между сложной доминантной фигурой — пулом и набором простых стрит-фигур для начинающих. Критически важным моментом было не допустить пересечение траекторий начинающих спортсменов и про-райдеров.
Бетонный скейт парк МЕГА Дыбенко: Строительство
Перед нашей командой стояла непростая задача. Участок строительства имел высокий уровень грунтовых вод. Кроме сложной геологии и огромных объемов грунта под экскавацию, мы оказались “заперты” плотным примыканием существующей дорожно-тропиночной сети. Дополнительным фактором испытания на прочность стал строгий график производства работ. Местоположение на территории общественного парка не оставило нам выбора, кроме ночных работ!
Наши инженеры разработали уникальное для России решение дренажа площадки, которое потребовало выемки более 1000 м3 грунта, отсыпки и тромбовки основания, а также обустройства системы водопонижения под массивной чашей бетонного боула. Таким образом, отвод воды производится изнутри и снаружи бетонного скейтпарка.

Бетонный коупинг для скейтпарка был произведен собственными силами нашей компании. Мы разработали несколько типовых элементов бетонного коупинга, а также отработали технологию уплотнения высокопрочного бетона на вибростоле. Таким образом, наша компания готова к применению оригинальных коупингов в будущих проектах FK-ramps!
Кроме уникальных функциональных элементов конструкции, фигуры скейтпарка выполнены с применением технологии пигментации бетонной смеси. Изолированный периметр площадки, а также очевидные входные группы со строгими правилами посещения позволят избежать конфликтных ситуаций во время эксплуатации сооружения.
Первый в России бетонный боул с оригинальным коупингом был открыт для райдеров в начале осени 2018 года.
Долгожданный бетонный скейтпарк с полноценным боулом был реализован компанией FK-ramps на территории МЕГА ПАРК (Мега Дыбенко).

Toronto's municipal (city) workers have been on strike since mid-June 2009. I set out to look for trash/ garbage/ rubbish lying around on the streets but for the most part, the city is actually surprisingly clean.
Unlike the last time they went on strike in 2002, this time Toronto residents are coping quite well. The city has set up temporary dump sites (usually in neighbourhood / neighborhood parks) where residents can bring in their own trash until the labour / labor dispute is over. Many businesses seem to be paying for private collectors to dispose their commercial garbage for the time being. Surely the rubbish bins on the major streets are overflowing with trash, but most streets are otherwise quite clean. Because of the cool summer this year, there's also little smell around the bins.
