From the BTC handbook "Controlled Firing" of 1956. The Western Region had to publish their own "Fuel Efficiency on the footplate" which explains how to manage a Victorian steam loco.

MudMan X at the Lakewood, NJ BlueClaws Stadium, is an event designed to reignite primitive instincts for survival and test the strength of those who are man enough, or woman enough to participate. The event consists of a series of brutal obstacles incorporating Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water….
I had intended to take photos at each of the numerous stations, but the first station I visited was named "The Shocker" which involved the participants crawling through a wooden tunnel half full of water and then having to run through an electrically charged grid consisting of electrified wires that are normally used to control fully grown bulls, cows, and horses.
For some reason, I found it very compelling to watch grown men getting shocked and crying out like little girls while many of the women were brought to tears, or at least, started yelling out blue language that made them sound like sailors! I spent the entire day taking pictures and watching the runners wince out in pain or cry out for help, and sometimes, plant their faces into the mud from the shock of the electricity going into their bodies.
Who doesn't love a little pain?
The Control Room (National Trust building E4) was constructed for the remote operation and monitoring of the Vibration Test Buildings. It is constructed in a simple, functional and contemporary style in Burwell white bricks that contrast with red asphalt covered lower sections of the metal framed panels of the bays. It is divided into two sections; to the west the slightly taller portion housed control and monitoring equipment, and to the east were staff facilities. The building is entered at the eastern end through an inset covered porch, which is surfaced in red and yellow flag stones arranged in a chequer board design. Entry into the Control Room was past the messengers’ room, located on the west side of the entrance and to its rear a windowless switch room. On the opposite side of the entrance was the cloak room. Along the rear wall is a ladies lavatory, cleaners’ room and a gents’ locker room and lavatory. At the eastern end of the corridor is a small tea room and to its south a large mess room. The taller western section of the building is split into two by a longitudinal east to west corridor. At its eastern end to the south is a store room and on the opposite side of the corridor a dark room. To their west and to either side were six almost identical bays, although the two in the south west corner are open to form a single large room. These rooms were used for housing control and monitoring equipment, which was supported on a raised floor, the under floor void probably accommodated air conditioning pipes and cabling. To reduce noise the upper sections of these rooms and their ceilings are lined with square pierced plaster board panels.
On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, the Elkhart County Parks teamed up with Blue Heron Ministries to conduct a prescribed burn at Boot Lake Nature Preserve. These burns act as a powerful restoration tool that helps release nutrients back into the soil to stimulate prairie growth, and clear out invasives, making room for native plants to grow and flourish.
Festung IJmuiden - MKB Heerenduin
Marineküstenbatterie, Widerstandsnest 81
Initially the battery consisted of a simple fire control post and four open beds, where the guns were mounted.
But later it became too vulnerable. Therefor the Germans had this naval battery reinforced with four artillery bunkers of the type M272, with a central fire control station of the type M178.
These bunker types are quite remarkable in the Netherlands. The fire control station was of medium size and had two observation rooms.
The four guns bunkers each had a horizontal field of fire of 120 degrees. The ammunition for the gun was kept in two modest rooms behind the gun. More ammo was kept in a large bunker of type FL246, not far behind the fire control station. Two smaller ammunition depots of type 134 were located close to the gun bunkers. The battery included a large number of lighter buildings used as shelter and hiding places, a canteen, an office, a kitchen and a dressing station.
Nowadays, almost all bunkers can be seen; in three combat shelters of the type 451a, a 450b and antiaircraft type FLA 24 an exhibition can be seen arranged by Bunkermuseum IJmuiden.
The sea has changed since 1945: by widening of the beach due to sand deposition against the south pier the sea is now further away from the battery than at that time.
This was not in the plan. I was not expecting 3 SD40-2s and an SD75I. I didn't expect to see them cross the North Sask river and I wasn't expecting to catch them again by the Cando Staging yard. I believe this one, L512 is heading to the various customers on the Beamer Industrial spur, not the Cando staging yard.
Cando's Sturgeon main staging yard has about 64 tracks, each one with about 1.1km of usable space.
Cando runs a regular train from its staging yard to various refineries in the area. See this video for details: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSohBWuCwZk
Trier, formerly known in English as Treves and Triers, is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle. Trier lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of red sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region.
Founded by the Celts in the late-4th century BC as Treuorum, it was later conquered by the Romans in the late-1st century BC and renamed Trevorum or Augusta Treverorum (Latin for 'The City of Augustus among the Treveri'). Trier may be the oldest city in Germany. It is also the oldest seat of a bishop north of the Alps. In the Middle Ages, the Archbishop-Elector of Trier was an important prince of the church, as the archbishop-electorate controlled land from the French border to the Rhine. The Archbishop-Elector also had great significance as one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire.

Here are all the controls temporarily mounted in the control panel, which has been installed in the cabinet. The buttons serve to mimic both the layout of a NEO GEO control panel as well as a Street Fighter-type six-button layout. It may not be obvious from this photo, but this is pretty much the absolute maximum amount of controls I was going to be able to cram into this control panel.
Burned leaves on the ground at Stony Creek Metropark.
There was a controlled burn of my favorite prairie at the mountain bike trails/Shelden Estates area of Stony Creek Metropark on April 1, 2010.
It looks like some of the fire spread to the woods. I guess that makes it uncontrolled.
An article about the burn appeared in the Oakland Post:
