AN/ASG-18 FIRE CONTROL SYSTEM RADAR

The 40 inch radar dish shown above was used with the AN/ASG-18 prototype fire control system. This B-58A was heavily modified to incorporate the systems electronics and large dish inside the aircraft's nose section.

"SNOOPY I"

The Hughes radar and missile test bed aircraft was built using a Convair B-58A "Hustler" supersonic bomber carrying the serial number 55-665. The aircraft was modified with a large 7ft. long nose section used to house the 40 inch wide radar dish and associated electronics for the AN/ASG-18 fire control system. This modification to the nose of the aircraft was responsible for it being given the distinctive nickname of "SNOOPY". In addition, the centerline fuel pod was modified to house the AIM-47A missile that could be lowered from the pod on a launch rail and fired. Numerous AIM-47's were launched between 1962 and 1964 when the Lockheed YF-12 Blackbird interceptor, which the radar and missile were being produced for, took over the testing. This aircraft, now an asset of the AFFTC Museum, was retired shortly after its testing duties were completed and placed on the Edwards AFB test range as a photo resolution target. It remains there to this day.

 

This 1/48th scale model was hand built by Mr. James Sieff and graciously donated to the AFFTC Museum.

This was supposed to be a handheld KAP control system. I did actually get it to work, to a degree. But it had problems -- the recharger for the Li-Ion battery didn't work and the hairball wiring made it difficult to stuff in its box. I stopped working on it in 2007.

 

Now I'm working on a similar control system, though. But the new one will work off AA batteries, be based on a printed circuit board, and incorporate a video monitor. I'll post pictures of the new design as I build it. At the moment it's just a bunch of schematics.

The E-3 Sentry is an airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft that provides all-weather surveillance, command, control and communications needed by commanders of U.S. and NATO air defense forces. As proven in Desert Storm, it is the premier air battle command and control aircraft in the world today. The E-3 Sentry is a modified Boeing 707/320 commercial airframe with a rotating radar dome. The dome is 30 feet (9.1 meters) in diameter, six feet (1.8 meters) thick, and is held 11 feet (3.3 meters) above the fuselage by two struts. It contains a radar subsystem that permits surveillance fromthe Earth's surface up into the stratosphere, over land or water. The radar has a range of more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) for low-flying targets and farther for aerospace vehicles flying at medium to high altitudes. The radar combined with an identification friend or foe subsystem can look down to detect, identify and track enemy and friendly low-flying aircraft by eliminating ground clutter returns that confuse other radar systems.
