There's so much water around Bamberg. The Regnitz River on one side and the large Rhine-Main-Danube canal on the other. The city has been flooded repeatedly, and it's also employed effective flood control. Massive water gates can be shut off when needed. Flood waters in the Regnitz are then diverted around the city to the canal, where high levees can contain immense quantities of water. This photo shows older and simpler water gates on the Regnitz near the old city hall. The massive modern water control system is farther south.

The old city hall with its Tudor-style half-timber add-on is often photographed from the footbridge up ahead. I was just one bridge (about 200 meters) farther back. [DSC03211_lr_2000]

Thank you all for the clicks, comments & faves.

The Regnitz River looks like it's close to flooding, especially when you see how close to the water's edge these houses in Little Venice are. But Bamberg has a good flood control system that diverts water from the river into the large Rhine-Main-Danube canal, where there are high levees to protect against flood damage. Also, my low level shot with this wide lens exaggerates things a bit. The areas with grass, however, do not usually have river water in them. So that's a little bit of flooding. 16:9 crop. The ATTAS (Advanced Technologies Testing Aircraft System) was in operation as a research aircraft at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig from 1985 to 2012.

The base is the VFW 614 commercial aircraft, the first passenger jet developed and built in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The development of the aircraft type VFW 614 began in the mid-1960s at the United Aviation Engineering Plants VFW - a merger of Focke-Wulf, Weser Flugzeugbau and Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugbau in Bremen. This was the forward-looking conceptual design of a short-haul commercial aircraft for up to 44 passengers.

The M 45H turbine jet engines developed specifically for this purpose by Rolls-Royce/SNECMA had a large by-flow ratio of 3:1. The arrangement of the engines on pylons above the wing distinguished the VFW 614 strikingly from other aircraft. This avoided the suction of foreign bodies during operation on unpaved slopes.

The plane was not a commercial success. Only 19 aircraft were manufactured between 1971 and 1977.

The last flying VFW 614 was the ATTAS, which was used as a research aircraft at DLR for 27 years from 1985 to 2012. The ATTAS was equipped with flight test equipment for this purpose. In addition to a measuring system, this included data recording and additional sensors as well as modern experimental avionics, in particular an electrohydraulic flight control system (fly-by-wire/fly-by-light) in duplex design.

A window blind is a type of window covering. There are many different kinds of window blinds which use a variety of control systems. A typical window blind is made up of several long horizontal or vertical slats of various types of hard material, including wood, plastic or metal which are held together by cords that run through the blind slats. Window blinds can be maneuvered with either a manual or remote control by rotating them from an open position, with slats spaced out, to a closed position where slats overlap and block out most of the light.

At 5:56 p.m. on April 27, 1991, Burlington Northern train 204 heads east along the “Ol’ Man River” and Mississippi Palisades State Park as it rolls toward Savanna, Illinois. The train is led by GP20C No. 2003, one of BN’s unique Caterpillar-powered GP20s. Rebuilt by Generation II between 1988 and 1990, ten units (Nos. 2000-2009) were equipped with a Caterpillar 3500-series 2,000 hp engine, along with other improvements like an all new electronic control system. One obvious external difference was a new angular cab replacing the EMD original.

Built by GM in Canada and introduced from 1979, these DF class locomotives were upgraded with turbo to GT22 MC in the 1990s. The class is gradually being converted to DFB which denotes Brightstar (GE `Brightstar' adhesion control system) equipped. Each overhaul which usually includes some rebuilding of cab can cost over 1 Million New Zealand dollars.

242 209 has worked its last trains for the passenger operation in Czech Republic and is due to move to ČD Cargo shortly for modifications.

Eventually fitment of European Train Control System will take place which is due to become mandatory on certain lines in the Czech Republic from 2025. It is envisaged they will replace the older Class 230 "Laminates" which are reportedly unsuitable for installation of ETCS.

During times of extreme rainfall within the Garstang Flood Control Basin, control gates are raised in the River Wyre just downstream of the Millennium Green in Garstang, causing water to collect and flood upstream fields including the Green. This prevents a surge of water inundating downstream villages on the Fylde plane. As rainfall subsides, the gates are gradually opened allowing retained water from the fields to escape at a safe, controlled rate.

The Flood control system is managed by the Environment Agency and warning signs are displayed on the approaches to the Green prior to operation of the floodgates.

As Go-Ahead was not in a position to carry out all services with its own vehicles and personnel when it took over the Augsburg route network in December 2022, a substitute concept was drawn up for the connection from Donauwörth to Aalen. The companies DB Regio and Weser Ems Eisenbahn GmbH (WEE) were commissioned to operate the train service. The latter started with two push-pull trains and the company's own 143s. However, the former Reichsbahn locomotives proved to be less than robust and retired from service after a few days and the onset of winter due to major damage. Fortunately, BayernBahn, based in Nördlingen, quickly stepped in with replacement engines. And so it came to the actual sensation. After almost 20 years, class 140 locomotives were once again used in passenger train service and also operated push-pull trains using the appropriate control system. Therefore, the choice of vehicles was manageable, as only the 140 850 and 856 from the BayernBahn stock had such a device. In addition, the 111 036 was also used. On 17 December 2022, the perfect winter weather was immediately used to document this substitute service. In frosty temperatures, I was able to photograph 140 850 with its RB 63062 on its way to Donauwörth crossing the bridge over the Wörnitz near Ronheim.

The AWACS aircraft, built by Russians, is designed to detect, track and determine the origin of air and surface targets, as well as conduct surveillance, command, control and communications functions for command posts of automatic control systems, and give guidance in hitting air and surface targets. The site of this AWACS aircraft was a treat to the eyes. It looked magnificent with wings spread out against beautiful blue sky with white clouds. People who came for Air Force Day celebration weren't allowed near any aircraft. I had to manipulate my way to the aircraft to click this amazing Ultra Wide Shot!

Geslaagde gok dus ;-)

---

Here you can see locomotive 5509 TVM in front of a short freight train from Ans to tha quarry in Quenast. Untill December 31, 2021, this locomotive (amongst others) was in service for NMBS/SNCB to repatriate trains in distress on the Belgian high speed line 1 from Halle to the border of France. Therefor, the locomotive received in 1996 the TVM security system. TVM means 'Transmission Voie-Machine' and is a French high-speed train control system.

Belgium, Flanders, Beersel, L26 Schaarbeek - Halle - March 9, 2022 - 10:21 AM.

Fresh tuna in the hold

Tangalle (Sri Lanka) - Tuna is a bit like sea gold for Sri Lanka. This country is the leading exporter of fresh tuna to the European Union. But faced with illegal fishing, the European Union ended its imports from Sri Lanka in 2014.

Faced with this shortfall, the island's authorities finally agreed to put in place a real control system for high seas fishing. So that since 2016, Sri Lanka has been able to resume its exports of fresh tuna.

Each year this country exports 18,000 fresh fish for a value of US $ 300,000 (2016 figure according to a Fish Life study).

Sri Lanka has a fleet of 1,600 deep-sea vessels and 2,200 inshore fishing vessels for 600,000 seafarers on board.

Explanation: This colorful cosmic skyscape features a peculiar system of galaxies cataloged as Arp 227 some 100 million light-years distant. Swimming within the boundaries of the constellation Pisces, Arp 227 consists of the two galaxies prominent on the left; the curious shell galaxy NGC 474 and its blue, spiral-armed neighbor NGC 470. The faint, wide arcs or shells of NGC 474 could have been formed by a gravitational encounter with neighbor NGC 470. Alternately the shells could be caused by a merger with a smaller galaxy producing an effect analogous to ripples across the surface of a pond. Remarkably, the large galaxy on the right hand side of the deep image, NGC 467, appears to be surrounded by faint shells too, evidence of another interacting galaxy system. Intriguing background galaxies are scattered around the field that also includes spiky foreground stars. Of course, those stars lie well within our own Milky Way Galaxy. The field of view spans 25 arc minutes or about 1/2 degree on the sky. (text: apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110226.html)

The E-3 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) is built by Boeing Defense & Space Group. The role of the E-3 is to carry out airborne surveillance, and command, control and communications (C3) functions for both tactical and air defense forces.

In the US, the aircraft carries the designation E-3 AWACS. The UK designation is E-3 Sentry AEW (airborne early warning) and the French designation is E-3 SDA.

The E3 look-down radar has a 360° view of the horizon, and at operating altitudes has a range of more than 320km. The radar can detect and track air and sea targets simultaneously.

In a tactical role, the E-3 can detect and track hostile aircraft operating at low altitudes over any terrain, and can identify and control friendly aircraft in the same airspace. In the strategic defense role, the E-3 provides the means to detect, identify, track and intercept airborne threats.

The canal is straight for its entire length, and the surrounding countryside is relatively flat. It has one lock, five swing or lift bridges and is carried across two aqueducts. At its northern end it crosses the River Went, while at its southern end it crosses the River Don. The River Don aqueduct looks precarious, as the canal regularly overflows the eastern side of the structure, and there only appears to be railings preventing the boats from falling down into the river below. Both ends of the aqueduct are protected by large guillotine gates, which are there to prevent the river overflowing the canal when it is in spate, and flooding the surrounding countryside.

For the boater, the most notable feature is the complicated operation of Sykehouse Lock. The lock is automated but the control system is disabled until the manually operated swing bridge over the top of it has been opened.

The region through which the canal flows is sparsely populated, as there are no major towns, and just two main villages. The civil parish of Sykehouse, which includes a number of outlying settlements, straddles the northern end of the canal, and Kirk Bramwith is at the southern end. For much of its length, the towpath forms part of the route for the Trans Pennine Trail which joins it at Top Lane lift bridge, crosses to the east bank at Sykehouse lock, and leaves at Sykehouse lift bridge.

A No 8 Sqn RAF E3D Sentry AEW1 (AWACS) from RAF Waddington taxes out for departure from RAF Lossiemouth during a weeks detachment.

No. 8 Squadron of the Royal Air Force operates the Boeing E-3D Sentry from RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire. The RAF AWACS fleet was originally made up of seven E-3Ds, with the UK designation Sentry AEW1.

On March 6, 2025, I wanted to take another shot of the semaphore signals around Zeitz, as they are about to be replaced by an electronic control system. While waiting in Zeitz, EBS 142 001 arrived with a tank car train. I was hoping on the off chance that the train would be heading for the line to Weißenfels. Upon arriving at the level crossing just beyond Theißen station, several photographers were already waiting, which raised my hopes. After crossing with a regional train, the train accelerated out of Theißen station. I captured the entire process with a high tripod.

69001 'Mayflower' skirts the Thames estuary while working 6T94, the 0911 Hoo Junction to Grain ballast empties.

The class 69s were converted from the 1970's-era class 56 design. The powerplant and associated control systems from the class 56 were replaced with EMD equipment similar to that used in the class 66 fleet, while the bodies, wheelsets, bogie frames, suspension, traction motors and fuel tanks were reused.

69001 is the first of class, named after the Mayflower which took the founding fathers from Plymouth, England, to Cape Cod in 1620. The naming commemorates the joint work by the British freight haulier GBRf and the company that converted the locomotive, Progress Rail, a subsidiary of the US corporation Caterpillar.

While class 69s have worked on the Isle of Grain branch at least once before, this was one of the very few appearances to date of the locomotives on this freight only branch.

This was a rare example where the appearance of a particular locomotive was a complete surprise to me. With the UK's very active rail enthusiast network and the presence of much open source data from the railway companies, most movements and many locomotives allocations are documented in advance. On this occasion, both almost failed to alert me: as it happened, as I heard the train approaching I received a message from a friend telling me this locomotive was on its way.

Built in 1804, John Webb's Windmill is a tower mill and is the only remaining windmill in Thaxted. This windmill is the largest and most advanced of all the Thaxted mills and it worked for a hundred years. Built to satisfy a growing demand for flour at a time of agricultural expansion, it was constructed from local materials, with the bricks being made and fired half a mile away in the Chelmer valley. John Webb owned the farmland on which the mill was built.

A gallery at first floor level surrounded the mill and was used for easy loading and unloading from carts and waggons, but when the mill was first built it was from this gallery that the sweeps, i.e. the sails, were individually adjusted to suit the wind. This was when spring sails were fitted. Later these were replaced with patent sails and thereafter all four sails could be adjusted at one time by the use of an invention known as a 'spider', which is a centrally controlled system of levers.

By 1907 the mill was uneconomic to work and when offered for auction it failed to sell.

Fruitvale station is a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station located in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, California, United States. The elevated station has two side platforms.

BART is a high-speed inter-city and metropolitan rail transit system consisting of 44 stations and over 100 miles of trackway in 4 counties. It provides transit service to patrons in the Bay Area region, which includes more than 100 municipalities. BART is the backbone of the regional and local public transportation network. BART was established in the late 1960s under the notion of “if the Bay Area is to be preserved as a fine place to live and work, a regional rapid transit system is essential to prevent total dependence to automobiles and freeways.”

BART is an electrified rail transit system equipped with a state-of-the-art train control system that provides automatic train operations by regulating speeds, station stops, and routing through interlockings. The system also includes a network of communications, computer, and control systems to supervise train operations, control and monitor field equipment, provide patron assistance and information in stations, and other activities related to providing a safe and reliable rail transit system.

Like three years ago, starting the new season with a wonderful and enchanting Hubble's Variable Nebula (NGC 2261)

Previous approach: www.flickr.com/photos/olegbr/8552071862/in/dateposted/

I wanted to personally check whether it still variable ...

It was found that this is so :)

Here animation L-channel 200%: olegbr.astroclub.kiev.ua/files/astrofoto/NGC2261/NGC2261_...

Of course, 3 years - a very large interval for observing the changes in the nebula. Everything is much faster: www.umanitoba.ca/science/astronomy/cbrown/imaging/hvn/ana...

In 2013-2016 animation, I drew attention to the star just above the nebula, which is for 3 years significantly shifted to the right.

To heighten the effect, combined with the current picture image DSS., For about 60 years, the offset is already pretty decent. olegbr.astroclub.kiev.ua/files/astrofoto/NGC2261/NGC2261_...

Here www.astrosurf.com/mcianci/ngc2261.html Italian colleague calculated that the proper motion (proper motion) of the star 0.2" per year. The name is NLTT 16798 and is listed as High Proper Motion Star: simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=NLTT+16798

Explanation: What causes Hubble's Variable Nebula to vary? The unusual nebula pictured above changes its appearance noticeably in just a few weeks. Discovered over 200 years ago and subsequently cataloged as NGC 2661, the remarkable nebula is named for Edwin Hubble, who studied it earlier this century. Hubble's Variable Nebula is a reflection nebula made of gas and fine dust fanning out from the star R Monocerotis. The faint nebula is about one light-year across and lies about 2500 light-years away towards the constellation of Monocerotis. A leading variability explanation for Hubble's Variable Nebula holds that dense knots of opaque dust pass close to R Mon and cast moving shadows onto the reflecting dust seen in the rest of the nebula.

Groeten terug 👋!

Here you can see TUC-Rail 5501 TVM in front of an empty freight train from Antwerpen-Berendrecht to the quarry in Quenast.

Many thanks and greetings to the train driver!
