Distant jet contrail.

Airplane contrails spreading out in the sky, massive CO2 pollution high up in the atmosphere.

There aren't too many planes up there with four engines. I'm pretty sure this one is a 747. Conditions at sunset were just right for creating contrails at relatively low altitudes. When I saw that, I couldn't resist taking a couple of pictures, since I could clearly see the airplanes that were making the contrails.

What happens when the contrails form behind the airplane is interesting to me. In this one you can see how the contrail on the right side is twisting around itself in the vortex created by the plane's wing. These vortexes are violent, and enough to take a small plane down if they have the misfortune of flying through one of them after one of the big ones has gone by. They can last for minutes. A real hazard, they are. The vortexes reduce the fuel efficiency of the airplane. It's been discovered that putting little vertical tails sticking up from the ends of the wings helps control those vortexes. That's why you see those kind of things more and more on airplanes.

Caught in the sunset

Underneath an aging contrail a patch of thin cloud reveals the continued path of the aircraft where descending turbulent air has pushed out a trail of holes.
