The city's Clean-Up campaign dose seem to be making some visible progress in slowly improving the condition of waste collection and disposal in the city.

Thousands of men and women are dressed in these orange and green jumpsuits that are emblazoned with the program's clever logo: a giant exclamation point! I feel the graphics allude to comic book action heros, and these workers certainly deserve a lot of attention and praise.

Beyond trying to containerize and mechanize waste collection, the initiative is also experimenting with some more controversial approaches. Private security firms have been licensed to enforce the city's cleanliness bylaws, and have been enticed by an agreement that sees them keeping half of any fine levied. They're also trying the social marketing route and handing out ID badges to citizens who are keen to be ambassadors of the program.

The Postcard

A postally unused postcard that was published by Santoro Graphics Ltd. of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The card, which has a divided back, was printed in England.

Odin Rosenvinge (1880 - 1957)

The artwork was by Odin Rosenvinge, who was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne of Danish descent. After leaving school, he joined a Leeds commercial art and printing firm where he started to paint marine subjects.

When he was thirty-two, he moved to Liverpool and joined the firm of Turner and Dunett, who had all the major shipping companies as clients.

Odin served in the Middle East during the Great War. In the 1930's, his employers went into liquidation, and he went freelance, becoming one of the most celebrated poster and postcard artists.

Ellerman & Bucknall

The short-lived Ellerman and Bucknall Steamship company was formed in 1914 from the amalgamated shipping companies that John Ellerman had been involved in, and the struggling Bucknell shipping company which Ellerman purchased in 1908, the name change finally happening in 1914. Note the two flags, one featuring 'E&B' and the other featuring 'JE'.

The Great War decimated the fleet, and Ellerman bought another shipping company in 1916, the name being changed to Ellerman and Wilson.

During WWII 60 out of 105 ships were sunk, and during the containerizing of cargo in the sixties, the competition brought more changes.

The musical chairs of company names continued until the Ellerman name finally died in 2004 under the ownership of Hamburg Sud.

Sir John Ellerman - the Secretive Billionaire

Great Britain's richest ever businessman lived a low profile existence, to the point of invisibility.

John Ellerman was born on Anlaby Road, Hull in 1862. He was the son of a German corn merchant who had come to the city from Hamburg in 1850.

His father died when John was 9 years old and left him a legacy of £600. His mother came from Birmingham, and John moved to the city to start a career as an accountant. After passing his exams he moved to London and set up his own accountancy practice.

He began his business empire in 1892 when he put together a consortium to buy up an ailing shipping company. He sold on the company a few years later to the American financier JP Morgan, at a considerable profit. Spurred on by this success, Ellerman began to snap up other shipping lines.

William Rubinstein is Professor of History at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He explained that Ellerman was one of the first businessmen to use an analytical approach to identifying companies ripe for takeover:

"He had a genius for the balance sheet. He could

spot underperforming firms and he bought them

up and put them back on their feet."

He was awarded a baronetcy in 1905 for his support in providing the government with ships during the Boer War.

In 1916 Ellerman acquired the Hull based Wilson Line, once the world's largest privately owned fleet. He began to branch out, buying breweries and coal mines.

With the approach of the Great War, Ellerman started to invest in the media. A decision partly motivated by his father's origins, according to Professor Rubinstein:

"He was afraid people would start picking on him

because he was a German. He had an interesting

solution to this and the press, he bought up most

of Fleet Street."

Sir John had major shareholdings in The Times, Daily Mail, Financial Times, Illustrated London News and Tatler. The tactic seemed to work:

"He managed very successfully to keep his

names out of the papers, except for the Daily

Express, which was headed by Lord

Beaverbrook, who hated him for some reason."

Despite his vast wealth he lived a quiet, low-profile existence away from high society.

One of the possible reasons for shunning the limelight was his personal life. He lived with a woman named Hannah Glover. The pair had a daughter together in 1894, but did not marry until 1908. Shortly afterwards they had a son.

Sir John Ellerman died in 1933. He left over £36 million in his will, over £10 billion in today's values.

Sir John's two children did not get on. It was reported that at their father's funeral the siblings had a row that led to them throwing furniture at each other.

Sir John's daughter, Annie Winifred Ellerman, moved to Paris and became a well regarded feminist writer, working under the pen name of Bryher. Her inheritance allowed her to fund the famous Parisian bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, which published the early works of novelists such as James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway.

However the bulk of the money went to his son, also named John, who took over the running of his father's business empire.

Sir John Ellerman Junior, although competent, did not have his father's commitment to business affairs. He did, however, inherit his father's disdain for the high-life; preferring to spend time studying rodents in South Africa.

Ellerman Junior had a philanthropic streak, and donated money to charities working with disabled groups, both in the UK and South Africa. Upon his death in 1973 the bulk of his money was invested in a trust fund for distribution to worthy causes.

For Professor Rubinstein the legacy of John Ellerman is that he ushered in the era of professional business management:

"He is, in a sense, the ancestor of the people who

go to get a MBA in business schools now. Or, train professionally to look at accounts and put companies

back on their feet or found new ones.

When he was doing it there was nobody like him.

Now they're a dime a dozen."

APM Terminals Suape signed today the addendum to the adhesion contract for the land of Estaleiro Atlântico Sul (EAS). The technical signing meeting was held at the Suape Port Authority Auditorium in the presence of the Brazilian Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho, Pernambuco State Governor Raquel Lyra, Suape Industrial Port Complex Director President Marcio Guiot, APM Terminals Managing Director Leo Huisman, and APM Terminals Suape Managing Director Aristides Russi Junior. APM Terminals Suape will operate the future APM Terminals container terminal at the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Port Industrial Complex (Suape) in Pernambuco, Brazil.

With this stage completed, APM Terminals Suape receives approval from Brazil’s National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) to change its cargo profile, enabling the terminal to operate containerized cargo and expand the area to be used by the terminal.

“The new container terminal in Suape will benefit APM Terminals global expertise as one of the largest terminal operators in the world. It will accelerate the region's development, increasing port competitiveness in the Brazilian Northeast. We have a lot of work ahead and we are honored by the trust placed on this project. APM Terminals Suape will be the first 100% electrified terminal in Latin America with a R$1.6 billion investment in this first implementation phase,” Junior said.

Sid Greer showing off his 2-year-old loblolly pine plantation. Greer employed a method recommended by Texas Agrilife Extension Service in which nearly half the number of seedlings were planted (380) than traditionally planted. Greer also used containerized trees instead of bare root seedlings in order to get the survival needed for a fully stocked stand. His objective in using these methods is to avoid having to conduct a small wood (pulpwood) cutting, which is low value, and have a higher value chip and saw cutting at 10 to 12 years.
