The final munition in the United States chemical weapons stockpile was safely destroyed in Kentucky July 7, 2023. The munition, an M55 rocket containing GB nerve agent, was destroyed at the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP), located on the grounds of the Blue Grass Army Depot. BGCAPP is now in the closure phase, expected to take about three years.
The Static Detonation Chamber 1200 facility stands at BGCAPP. This facility, then known as the Explosive Destruction Technology, destroyed the mustard-agent munitions in the stockpile in Kentucky during the plant’s operations phase. After an update and permitting approval to process nerve agent, it is now being used to destroy containerized rocket warheads formerly drained of their agent in the main plant, classified as secondary waste, during BGCAPP’s closure phase.
A total of 523 tons of agent was destroyed in Kentucky, marking the total elimination of more than 30,000 tons of chemical agent in the original U.S. stockpile.

American internationalism was born at sea. America has long been a maritime power and, since the end of World War II, the U.S. Navy has been the world’s dominant power on the high seas. American firms led the innovations of containerization that now dominate global trade, and U.S. institutions are the world leaders in the oceanographic sciences. Dominance of the high seas is a vital part of American grand strategy, and the stakes here are high: Most world trade moves by sea, as does about two-thirds of the world’s supply of oil and gas, and more than 90% of all data, via undersea cables. And oceanographic sciences form a vital plank in our understanding of climate change.
In each of these domains, the United States works closely with naval, industry, and science partners, especially in Europe and Asia. And for the past several decades, this has included China — now the largest shipbuilding nation in the world — a country whose ports dominate global trade flows and who is an increasingly important source of oceanographic sciences. But the context is rapidly changing — from the Black Sea to the Baltic and Barents Seas to the Western Pacific. New pressures on globalization and new sources of geopolitical tension pose potential challenges to sea-based cooperation and commerce alike.
On June 7, Brookings hosted a public event featuring the 32nd Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday, President of CMA CGM America and American President Lines Peter Levesque, and Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Margaret Leinen for a discussion about what is at stake at sea, and where America’s maritime interests lie today.

Honolulu District wrapped up its annual participation in the State of Hawaii and Joint Task Force-Homeland Defense Makani Pahili Exercise June 8.
District-wide support of the annual catastrophic disaster response exercise included internal drills and table-top exercises to assess the command’s capability to execute mission essential functions and provide external support to the State of Hawaii / JTF-HD in the event of a Category 4 hurricane impact to the Hawaiian Islands.
One important capability of the District’s disaster response is utilization of a Containerized Tactical Operations Center (CTOC). The containerized system provides a rapidly deployable tactical operations and communications platform for first responders where there are no available facilities or communications capabilities.
SAS Drakensberg (A301) is a fleet replenishment ship (AOR) of the South African Navy (SAN), with the primary role of assisting and supporting the SAN's combat vessels at sea. Built by the Sandock Austral Shipyards in Durban, it is the largest and most sophisticated warship to have been built in South Africa.
The design and shortcomings of Tafelberg heavily influenced the designers of Drakensberg. Drakensberg is able to carry 5,500 tons of diesel fuel, 210 tons of fresh water, 100 tons of dry provisions, over 30 tons of frozen food, 230 tons of containerized cargo or 1,000 tons of palletized and general cargo. The loading and offloading of this cargo is made possible with one 20-ton crane, four 2-ton cranes and a 5-ton hoist, assisted by two lifts of 2.5 and 7.5 tons respectively. Replenishment at sea (RAS) is from two abeam positions or from the RAS deck astern, with the ability to pump 40 tons of fuel per hour and 15 tons of fresh water per hour. In addition, an on-board plant enables the ship to produce 50,000 litres (11,000 imp gal; 13,000 US gal) of fresh water from sea water daily.
The ship carries two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB) called 'Stingrays' for small-craft duties, as well as two Delta-80 LCUs for limited amphibious use.
