Locks on the Manchester Ship Canal, taken from the Media City Footbridge that provides access to the IWM from MediaCityUK – BBC is to my right, the IWM is behind me, over my left shoulder.
If you have a sense of geography and are wondering how Manchester, a city 40 miles inland, became a port, it’s through this canal. The canal was dug in the late 1800’s (finished in 1894) as a way to bypass paying the port fees of Liverpool and to give Manchester an easier link to international shipping; when it was completed it was the largest river navigation canal in the world – the Wikipedia page has photos of ocean-going ships using the canal.
As happens with grand schemes, it became dated. Increases in ship size that came with containerization meant that traffic declined from the 1970’s on, resulting in the redevelopment of the harbor away from shipping to other business and residential.
