CEA Project Logistics were contracted for the transportation, assembly and installation of a metal press for a Metal Stamping and Assembly Factory in Rayong province, Thailand.

CEA received a combination of containerized and flat rack OOG cargo to their Cargo Consolidation Facility in Laem Chabang. Each container was unloaded and unstuffed. Several sections of the main bed and tie-rod uprights were assembled by CEA before transportation.

Upon arrival at the factory, the remaining press parts and sections were unloaded and assembled. As several sections were of considerable size and weight CEA erected a temporary gantry crane to assist in installation. The crane was placed over a pre-constructed pit which would house the completed press. The press bed section was lifted and placed into position and aligned on the pit floor.

Other sections were carefully lifted and moved into place with the crown section being installed last. Tie rods and bolts were tightened to complete the assembly of the major sections. The gantry crane was removed to allow a small mobile crane and Elevated Work Platform to install the smaller parts. Upon the project completion, both CEA and the client were very happy with the efficiency and expertise of the installation.

Harbor of Ravenna is protected by two long converging breakwaters extending more than a mile out to sea in a roughly triangular formation, with the entrance at the apex. The entrance is usually busy with commercial traffic. Yachts are not allowed to proceed inland up the channel or to berth in the commercial harbor and once through the entrance should therefore head straight for the entrance to the two marinas in an inner basin at the SW corner of the harbor about a mile WSW of the entrance. Yachts Visiting Ravena can seek a berth in one of the two marinas, Marina di Ravenna on the N side of the basin, which is run by two yacht clubs, the Ravenna Yacht Club and the Circulo Velico Ravennate, or Marina di Marinara on the S side. The entrance to the basin is immediately S of the port hand training wall leading inland and is accessed from due N, turning hard to starboard for Marina di Ravenna or continuing straight on for Marina di Marinara. Marina di Ravenna offers berths for up to 658 yachts up to 16 meters at its two yacht clubs; Marina di Marinara has over 1000 berths for yachts up to 40 meters / Port of Ravenna is an Italian seaport on the North Adriatic Sea in Ravenna, Italy. Historic Oakland Shipyards, Oakland CA

"On August 31, 1958, Matson's S.S. Hawaiian Merchant departed San Francisco Bay carrying 20 24-foot containers on deck. The historic voyage marked the beginning of an ambitious containerization program that achieved tremendous gains in productivity and efficiency from the age-old methods of break-bulk cargo handling. The container freight system that Matson introduced to Hawaii in 1958 was a product of years of careful research and resulted in the development of a number of industry innovations that became models worldwide. The company’s historic contribution to the maritime industry is prominently featured in an exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., entitled “Transforming the Waterfront.”"

American internationalism was born at sea. America has long been a maritime power and, since the end of World War II, the U.S. Navy has been the world’s dominant power on the high seas. American firms led the innovations of containerization that now dominate global trade, and U.S. institutions are the world leaders in the oceanographic sciences. Dominance of the high seas is a vital part of American grand strategy, and the stakes here are high: Most world trade moves by sea, as does about two-thirds of the world’s supply of oil and gas, and more than 90% of all data, via undersea cables. And oceanographic sciences form a vital plank in our understanding of climate change.

In each of these domains, the United States works closely with naval, industry, and science partners, especially in Europe and Asia. And for the past several decades, this has included China — now the largest shipbuilding nation in the world — a country whose ports dominate global trade flows and who is an increasingly important source of oceanographic sciences. But the context is rapidly changing — from the Black Sea to the Baltic and Barents Seas to the Western Pacific. New pressures on globalization and new sources of geopolitical tension pose potential challenges to sea-based cooperation and commerce alike.

On June 7, Brookings hosted a public event featuring the 32nd Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday, President of CMA CGM America and American President Lines Peter Levesque, and Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Margaret Leinen for a discussion about what is at stake at sea, and where America’s maritime interests lie today.

Exhibit at the Skyscraper Museum [1]:

Lower Manhattan, August 3, 1956

Thomas Airviews, Lower Manhattan

Lower Manhattan in the 1950s was mature business district trapped in the technology of an earlier age. No new office towers had been built in the financial district since the early 1930s, and a corset of finger piers bounded the island edge, constraining growth. Downtown's working waterfront was rendered obsolete, first by larger ships with deeper drafts, then by containerization which drove shipping to relocated to the vast, vacant expanses of the New Jersey lowlands. In 1966, only 18 of 51 piers were active, yet the remnants still exaggerated congestion and separated the public from access to the rivers.
