31/100
I saw an interesting video the other day for an advertisement for a particular beer.
The producers of this beer commercial borrowed a small 150 seat cinema playing a popular film, and filled 148 of its seats with rough-looking, tattooed bikers, leaving only two free seats in the middle of the theatre. They then allowed theatre management to sell tickets for the last pair of seats to several young couples.
The question then was - what would you do? (Needless to say the outcome for those that ventured forth was not what they were expecting and some of the facial expressions were just priceless!)
So, when I read "what would you do" I gave this some serious thought as recently I had the wonderful experience of running a fund raiser at our school where we provided parking for the soundwave concert which was being held at the RNA showgrounds. I've got to say, I've never met a nicer bunch of people - the great majority who were covered from head to toe in tats.
It reinforced to me - do. not. judge - especially on appearance only!!
Fast forward to me a few months later from the fund raiser, walking down the street to take a photo of a tree that has now gone (you'll all see what I mean when I post the picture of what I've been working on over the last few months) when I hear this voice - "wow, that's a big lens. What is it and can you take pictures of people far away?" (I had my 70-200L USM lens on the camera).
I looked up to see Daniel coming over. A discussion followed and when finished I asked Daniel if he would pose for my strangers project.
Needless to say the jokes that were coming from his friends about stranger danger to which I commented I don't even have a trench coat was quite entertaining.
So why did I start this stranger story with the add and my fund raising experience? When I first looked up and saw Daniel coming towards me, it could have been very easy to judge and think tall muscular man coming towards me covered in tat's equals danger. Instead I took the opportunity to chat for a second or two and met a lovely individual.
Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com"; or the group here on flickr www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/

My first submission for Strobist Bootcamp II.
My shot of Len below, Len's shot of me above.
I tried to work the composition of these shots around the theme (re: Financial Meltdown) as best I could. I live in Korea, so finding someone who is unemployed (read: drunk all day) is like shooting hookers in a barrel. You can't miss.
If you can't tell, this is us doing anything for a buck. Today, we're digging for gold up in them thar hills!
Strobist Information: (both shots)
SB-28: 1/4 power, high and slightly camera right, shoot through umbrella
SB-25: 1/8 power, gridded, aimed at the center of the guys' backs
SB-80x: 1/16 power, gelled blue, shot through the stump
