Sculpture - bordering on the edge of freedom
Thought - Expresses the exhilaration and risk of freedom moving through and outside of a sometimes constraining and sometimes supportive environment and being on the borderline between being within and breaking the bounds.
The exhibition Human Pyramid by artist Isla Hansen explores the relationship between body and technology, confronting the feeling of oppressive technological progress with objects of play. Through the use of digital fabrication processes and automated technologies in combination with the hand made, hand modeled, hand molded, and hand finished, the artist aims to reveal the myth of automation -- the often hidden human labor that is always a necessary part of using automated tools, often perceived as more technological than our own bodies. Human Pyramid explores the contradiction, absurdity, tragedy, and joy inherent in the human attempt to build worlds and control them through the use of tools and labor. Inspired by DIY home construction shows, erector sets and construction games, objects of play, sports media, and the notion of self-replicating machines, Human Pyramid searches for an aesthetic that reclaims the tools of oppressive systems constraining bodies at play and bodies at work.

Replica of British cannon. This British-made cannon was originally the artillery fortification for Kota Kuala Kedah which was seized by the Ligor army during the war between Kedah and Siam in 1831. This cannon is believed to be a contemporary of the Katak Puru Cannon (Toad Cannon), Badak Berendam Cannon (Wallowing Rhino Canon) and the Harung Darah Cannon (Blood Wader Cannon). It is estimated to be around 300 years old.
Due to limited resources and time constrains to prepare a text caption, I am simply transcribing the text prepared on the storyboard as a precursor for those interested in pursuing further research on the subject.
Fort Kuala Kedah (Kota Kuala Kedah) is the oldest Malay fort in northern Malaysia and dates from the 17th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt in the 19th century and was occupied by the Japanese troops during the Japanese occupation of Malaya in the Second World War.
Sultan Sulaiman Syah who ruled from 1602 to 1620 built the original fort from clay, bakau timber and bamboo with the assistance of his allies, the Portuguese who had established a presence in the area. The sultan ruled from his base at Fort Seputeh, which was destroyed by the Acheh Armada in 1619 (an event which resulted the Portuguese being ousted from the area) and again in 1770 by the Bugis Armada.
In 1780 to 1782, Sultan Mukarram Syah, the 20th sultan of Kedah who ruled from 1778 to 1797, rebuilt and strengthened Fort Kuala Kedah. Hafiz Sab, an architect who was also the "Maharaja Kadhi", or religious head, directed the rebuilding of the fort with labor imported from India and gave its presence look. Cannons purchased from the British and the Dutch were placed around the fort. A palace was built inside it.
The fort was attacked and destroyed in November 1821 by the powerful Siamese Armada. It occurred during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Syah II, the 22nd sultan of Kedah who ruled Kedah from 1804 to 1845. The fort was his administrative center.
The fort which was also known as For Kuala Bahang (Kota Kuala Bahang), is located near the mouth of Kedah River, about 12 kilometers from the town of Alor Setar. It was designated as a historical monument and historical site under the Antiquities Act 1976 in August 1978.

The focus of my research is an examination of the daily lives of South Asian women, specifically in my home city of Karachi, Pakistan. Within my art practice, I draw from my experiences of how I inhabit public and private spaces and rely on research from other South Asian scholars interested in gender, urban space and the women’s right in everyday life. My research into how gender is interwoven with demarcations between and connotations of public and private spaces has led me to deeply examine what private spaces and boundaries mean to women for whom unconditional access to public spaces is still a fantasy. In this exhibition I investigate “phenomenal boundaries”; a term coined by sociologist Bridget Purcell, that is, the boundary not as “real”, but as experienced and constituted (or not) by its inhabitants. My aim is to think about place from the lens of gender and discuss phenomenal boundaries women create in order to feel safer in public spaces, as well as the phenomenal boundaries in the form of fear that women experience when they step into a public place. Examining my relationship with place has led me to a deeper and more expansive definition of boundaries as constraining, or safe, and sometimes both at the same time. In the installation, Transgressing Boundaries, I present my perspective as a upper middle class woman living in Pakistan, negotiating the boundaries of fear, of limited access to public space, and within the private spaces of home. My work draws out how I, and many other women around me, actively engage and negotiate for space and power. One of the ways of doing this is by using the very same boundaries and constraints to empower space for ourselves in the patriarchal world. In this installation, I reflect on the idea of boundaries by curating a private space, built with separators, the ritual of Rangoli, and illustrations of myself. I create a private space that is safe and yet constraining, active and yet passive; a space that maintains boundaries while simultaneously transgress them.
In India, new product developments will continue to skew towards vegetarian dishes. Local diets and religious restrictions on the consumption of pork and beef are likely to constrain the development of meat-based ready meals, except in the eastern region.

This image is a photograph taken with my fathers vintage Kodak Camera with expired film. There is a park not too far from my home where there is a line of trees just before a fence on a hill. Many times I have walked my dog past this fence and never taken a second glance, but one day I had the thought that this image symbolized mans tendency to attempt to constrain nature and other people. I decided to shoot this scene on a vintage camera because I wanted the photograph to have an almost dreamy or surreal quality. It almost seems as if these trees are from some post-modern dream world where the government has decided to prevent citizens from exploring the forest.

I take a lot of pictures of the sky. Living in an urban environment, where it's impossible to see the naked horizon in any direction, feels increasingly constraining. There are times when i yearn for the clean lines of the coast, or big skies of the mountains. This is when i take pictures of the sky. <hick>

Replica of Dutch-made cannon 1610. This Dutch made cannon is made from iron. The top of its body decorated with the Dutch emblem (VOC), a ring of quails together with floral and dolphin motifs. Also seen is the date 1610. Estimated to be more than 350 years old.

Families connect us, embrace us, but they can also constrain. The negotiation of family life is a balance between individuality and collective identity; between one’s own needs and those of others. If this were simply a matter for each family to choose for themselves, things might be easier. But tradition, ideology, religion, and the ubiquitous fictions of advertising all bring external pressures to conform to the expectations of others. Expectations that are often impossible to square the one with another. No more so than in the expectations enshrined in the contemporary iconography of perfect motherhood.
Olga Steinepreis is an artist. She has also, in her own words, spent the past decade on maternity leave. However, as an artist she has not suspended work, but turned her creative focus upon the very challenges she faces negotiating a path through the myths and realities of motherhood.

Also Insufficient turning space (=0) at end of ramp. Western flare is too steep: S-West= 10.8; X-West= 26.0 &length= 4'7". Push Button: cross-slope is an excessive 11.9%. Sidewalk: clear width is only 2'4" (note: has a traffic signal pull box in the midst of it)., Add TD. Add groove lines. The extreme s-west constrains potential remedies (such as extending the flares or fixing the push-button's cross-slope). The push button may need to be moved in order to increase the sidewalk clear width.,
Through his work "Gateway", French Artist Philippe Charmes describes how potato faces the dilemma between protecting the small potato and constraining its growth when being wrapped in a shell. By recording the process of potato struggling to get rid of the protection of shell and burgeoning, this work demonstrates the tenacity of Hong Kongers who are dauntless and trying to survive in facing of the pandemic. Rather than run the wiring between the two PBCs around the outside, the cleaner solution was to cut each wire to length an run them all between the two boards. This also has the advantage of reducing the mass of the wire, and constraining their movement when the boards are glued together. This should keep the wires from pulling the pads off again.
