This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.
The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.
Having said that, there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible completely without proper context, and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who hilariously claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.

After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

I think Lance took this spectacular picture of the two of us. We all had a great time at Coors for the Washington/Rockies game.

ZAZ Zaporozhets was a series of rear-wheel-drive superminis (city cars in their first generation) designed and built from 1958 at the ZAZ factory in Soviet Ukraine. Different models of the Zaporozhets, all of which had an air-cooled engine in the rear, were produced until 1994. Since the late 1980s, the final series, ZAZ-968M, was replaced by the cardinally different ZAZ-1102 Tavria hatchback, which featured a front-wheel drive and a more powerful water-cooled engine.
The name Zaporozhets translates into a Cossack of the Zaporizhian Sich or а man from Zaporozhye (now Zaporizhzhia) or the Zaporozhye Oblast (now Zaporizhzhia Oblast).
Zaporozhets is still well known in many former Soviet states. Like the Volkswagen Beetle or East Germany's Trabant, the Zaporozhets was destined to become a "people's car" of the Soviet Union, and as such it was the most affordable vehicle of its era. At the same time, it was rather sturdy and known for its excellent performance on poor roads. Another important advantage of the Zaporozhets was its ease of repair.
The car's appearance gave birth to several nicknames that became well known across the Soviet Union: horbatyi ("hunchback", owing to ZAZ-965's insect-like form; although ZAZ factory workers never used this nickname), malysh (English: Kiddy), maanteemuhk (Estonian: Roadbump), ushastyi ("big-eared", due to ZAZ-966 and ZAZ-968's round air intakes on each side of the car to cool the rear-mounted engine), zapor ("constipation"), mylnitsa ("soap-box", for ZAZ-968M, lacking "ears" and producing a more box-like appearance).
Numerous special versions of the Zaporozhets were produced, equipped with additional sets of controls that allowed operating the car with a limited set of limbs, and were given for free or with considerable discounts to disabled people, especially war veterans - similar to SMZ-series microcars. These mobility cars would at times take up to 25% of ZAZ factory output.
The ZAZ-965A was an improvement on the ZAZ-965 and was produced from November 1962 to May 1969. In total, 322,106 units of the ZAZ-965 were produced. It was powered by a MeMZ-965 rear-mounted, air-cooled OHV 887 cc (54.1 cu in) V4 engine, partially of aluminium design, producing 27 PS (20 kW). From November 1966 some cars were fitted with the slightly more powerful 30 PS (22 kW) MeMZ-965A engine. The ZAZ-965's modest engine output has given ground to an urban joke that it was used as a starter motor in Soviet tanks.
As Soviet drivers were expected to do much of the servicing themselves, and mechanics trained in the servicing of consumer automobiles were in short supply, the engine's 90° V4 layout proved more practical, especially in harsh winter conditions. The rearwards centre of gravity of the engine also provided superior traction on steep slopes, though this advantage, which was also continued in later models, came at the expense of the car's infamous lack of cornering stability.
The ZAZ-965A also had its versions for disabled people (ZAZ-965B, AB, AR), as well as a more luxurious export variant, the ZAZ-965AE Yalta.
Despite the low prestige of those cars, they have shown an unbeaten accessibility and popularity among the people of the Soviet Union, becoming the "car for pensioners and intellectuals". They were the cheapest Soviet-made cars. Quite a large number of them were produced in variants for disabled people, with modified steering.
Between November 1966 and May 1969 the ZAZ-965A and its successor, the ZAZ966, were produced concurrently.
When production of the ZAZ-965 ended, 322,116 had been built.
The ZAZ-965 also inspired the 1962 prototype NAMI 086, named Sputnik (Fellow Traveller), with a 15 PS (11 kW) 500 cc (31 cu in) vee-twin (half an MeMZ-965), electromagnetic clutch and four-speed transmission. Fitted with a four-wheel independent suspension and weighing just 520 kg (1,150 lb), and intended for use by disabled people, it was never built.
The ZAZ KD of 1969 was also based on the ZAZ-965, fitted with a glassfibre body, giving it a weight of only 500 kg and a top speed of 75 mph (121 km/h) using just 30 PS (22 kW). It was never produced in quantity, either.

One of the walkways around Brent Cross, as we were either hitching in or out of London in 1994. We found this racist graffiti, "Brown Shit Out Now". We thought it was funny to take this literally, and added after it "Join the Faecal Matter Expulsion Society today!" - and Merrick did a charming pose to accompany it. The association of racism with constipation seems wholly apt.

Farewell little cat ...
April, 19 : We go to a Cat Shelter. There is 3 kittens. Sid is maybe not the cuttest, but he is the friendliest. We have to wait 2 more weeks before the adoption, as the owner wants to make sure the kitten is healthy.
I notice Sid has a really big and round belly, I ask about constipation problem but it seems it's not the case.
May, 4 : We can take Sid home \o/ The owner tells us he got some vermifuge. He still has a rather round belly. But he's very playful :)
From May, 4 to May, 10 : He's an adorable kitten, he plays a lot, and often insist on sleeping on my neck - which makes reading books very difficult.
May, 10 : I have the feeling he didn't eat much today, I'm not 100% sure about that. He vomit a litte on the evening. I hope he's just trying to get rid of hairballs, because appart from that, he's still playing a lot.
May 11 : He looks very apathetic in the morning, and vomit some more... ok, so we're going to the vet. Verdict: worms... and maybe something else, the vet seems worried (especially about the big belly). He make several jabs and give vermifuge to Sid, and gives us some pills for him, saying that if he doesn't look better tomorrow, we should come back. He also gave a syringe without the needle so we can make Sid drink some water with sugar.
May 12, 7am : Ouch. Sid seems very ill. I try to give him some more sugared water. Maybe we should wait a little before going to the vet.
Oh well, at 8:30 we're in the car. The vet finds that Sid has a very low temperature and start to be a little dehydrated. She (yes today it's a woman) says Sid should stay at the vet clinic, but she seems really worried and tells that his chances to live are very thin.
At 4:30am there's a phone call from the vet clinic telling Sid died :( The vet think that's not only the worms, but also a virus that killed him.
Well ... I guess I had to write it down once for all. I'm trying to confort myself by thinking that Sid had almost a week of happiness here, the same would have happenned if he stayed in his little cage at the cat shelter, but without the happiness.
Now I learned several things :
- a big belly is not a normal thing on a kitten. It's likely to mean worms. It seems the vermifuge he got just before we adopt him wasn't enough.
- in general, if the 3rd eyelid of a cat is showing, it means the cat is sick. You can see the 3rd eyelid on that photo - even if it was taken on may6. I think that eyelid was slightly visible almost every day. I wish I knew that and noticed that before ...
- to see if a cat is dehydrated, pinch the skin on the back of the neck, and then release. The skin should fall back into place quickly, if not, the cat may be dehydrated.
I am also very scared to have another kitten. The only cats I knew before that were some strong and healthy cats, that almost never went to the vet. I hope I'll never have to use this new 'knowlegde' about cats.
