The sun sets over MK.IX Spitfire PT879, one of around 1300 Spitfires consigned to Russia as part of a wartime Lend-Lease program. Constructed at the Vickers Armstrong factory in Castle Bromwich in August 1944, PT879 was shipped via Murmansk to the 2nd Squadron, 767th regiment, 122nd Division of the Russian airforce. PT879 crashed during a dogfight over the Kola peninsula in spring 1945 with just 29 hours on the airframe and was abandoned. The freezing environment preserved the aircraft well, and PT879 was recovered to the UK in 1998, the only Spitfire transferred to Russia to have returned. Much of the original aircraft has been salvaged despite the high speed crash and hundreds of the original parts including the wings reused in the restoration to flying condition making this one of the most original Spitfires from WW2.

An absolute gem and a pleasure to photograph.

Hay pueblecitos pequeños

perdidos en la montaña

que entre rocas se protegen

de vientos y de otras cosas.

Ellos saben que observando

han conocido su entorno,

y día a día lo cuidan

para que aquellos que vienen

descubran lo que ellos ven

y se lleven la consigna:

disfruta de lo que ves

y cuídalo con esmero,

que esto que hoy conoces

lo vieron antes aquellos

que fueron nuestros abuelos.

Ellos pusieron empeño

y cariño para mantenerlo

así como tú lo ves

muy pegadito al cielo.

I’m normally a bit of solo photographer; not directly antisocial, but happy to avoid other people and claim it is just “extreme social distancing”. But on this photoshoot, I met up with the fabulous G. Postlethwaite esq. , a ’tog highly skilled in the art of wit and repartee, as well as all things photographic. And I must declare I had a phenomenally enjoyable time, possibly because we spent the majority of the time talking toot and putting the world to rights, in no small measure. Of course, we did do some pressing of the buttons and capturing of the photons, just to keep up appearances. And it is was during these brief moments, when we were totally focused (yes, it is a very bad pun, and yes, it was intended. Sorry) on tripods, F numbers and shutter speeds, that I noticed something different about how I was approaching my snappering. Normally, I just bumble onto a location, have a quick pootle around to choose a semi-random spot to plonk my tripod, and then take photos in the same manner that I have always done. It’s a tradition, or an old practice or something. But suddenly I found myself engaged in something new: insightful and engaging discussions on composition, lead-in lines, colour pop and photoshop editing techniques. Now, you have to realise, when I say “discussions” this may lead to you to think that these were conversations where I was an equal participant, bringing my fair share of new and exciting ideas. Oh, how I wish this was true. However, the reality was much more of a learning experience for me - Sir GP was sharing so many erudite comments about possible shots we could that it made my cranium do a three-sixty. To my shame, I have to admit I nicked some of his suggestions and will happily fob them off as being my ideas. This triptych being a case in point. All three views have their origins in Sir GP’s original observations. I thank you, Sir GP. You are a teacher without knowing it.

Footnote: There were numerous occasions where I forsook the gentle and wise words that were offered in my direction and I, instead, “did my own thing”. Net result: 96.3% of these occasions have now been consigned to the computer recycle bin.

A dying daffodil is consigned to the compost heap

A scene soon to be consigned to the history books by the introduction of new IEPs. You have to be patient to avoid any passengers walking past....

The LH and arrow on the top of the gasholder are a navigation aid to pilots arriving at nearby London Heathrow long consigned to history - as are pair of class 50s on Saturday morning trains from Oxford.

------------

In 1985, French artist Arman received a commission from the State for the creation of two sculptures. The artist poposed, on the theme of the station and travel, two monumental works that he wished to be immediately accessible: "L'Heure de tous" and "Consigne à vie".

"L'Heure de tous" and "Consigne à vie" occupy a symmetrical location on the forecourt of Gare Saint Lazare - "Consigne à vie" on the side of the Cour de Rome and 'L'Heure de tous' on the side of the Court of Le Havre.

"Consigne à vie/Lifetime deposit" is an accumulation of suitcases. Usual objects, attributes par excellence of travel, the suitcases piled up by the artist, are elevated here, by the nobility of bronze, to the rank of classical statuary.

Looking rather forlorn, withdrawn Class 40 40051 was awaiting its fate sandwiched between some vintage wagons in the sidings at the North end of York TMD on September 15th 1978. The loco had been new from Vulcan Foundry as D251 in December 1959. It's first home was at York (50A), and spent its entire working life of just over 18 years at various Eastern Region depots including Gateshead, Thornaby and Healey Mills. D251 was renumbered to 40051 in October 1973 and was withdrawn as surplus to requirements and in a worn condition, in January 1978. 40051 was consigned to history at Doncaster Works in December 1978.

During yesterday's terrible weather (Storm Eunice) I was looking through last year's photos and found this one that I had consigned to the bin as I thought it was a bit too soft. This was taken from a speeding boat (30 knots) to St Kilda when I could barely hold myself still, let alone the camera. I know it isn't the best shot in the world but Storm Petrel is a very difficult species to photograph and this will have to do until I manage better ones. I should call this species European Storm Petrel as there are lots of other species in the world. This species is restricted to islands on the Atlantic seaboard of Europe with a small number in the Mediterranean. They nest in burrows or in rock crevices but are vulnerable to predators so have disappeared from islands where rats have been introduced. Their small size (15cm and 25g, a bit larger than a sparrow) also makes them vulnerable to bird predation (mainly gulls) so usually only return to their nests during darkness. Daylight hours are spent at sea, usually a long way from land, which makes them difficult to see. They look tiny when you do see them at sea, rather like House Martins. That white stripe on the underwing is diagnostic of European Storm Petrel, along with the uniform dark upperwing and square-ended tail. The scientific name is Hydrobates pelagicus; Hydrobates means water walker, from their habit of pattering on the surface, and pelagicus means of the sea. At the nest they make a beautiful purring sound that has been described as like a fairy being sick. Here's a recording from my friend Andrew Harrop from Mousa in Shetland which is the first place I ever saw (and heard) them: xeno-canto.org/649417

Finally the name Petrel is an odd name, first noted in 1602 as pitterel (later pittrel) from the pitter-patter of their feet on the water. The supposed connection with St Peter walking on water is due to later speculation about the name. For interest here's a Wilson's Petrel (Oceanites oceanicus) pattering on the water: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/33263364248/in/photolist

Another railway scene very soon to be consigned to the history books - the Bord na Móna's 3-ft gauge railway serving the ESB Lanesborough power station. On Friday 8th November 2019, Bord na Móna 2002-built 4-wheel diesel-hydraulic LM427 (rebuilt in 2017) rounds a curve on the Mountdillon system, nearing the end of its long journey from the peat bog, along the scenic double-track 'main line' section.

After a working life of 45 years, 43924, was consigned to the scrapyard of Woodham Bros. in Barry, South Wales. It secured its place in preservation folklore in 1970 becoming the very first of over 200 locomotives to leave the scrapyard for a life in preservation when a small band of enthusiasts, operating under the name of ‘The 4F Society’, finally gained permission to purchase and remove it. kwvr.co.uk/locos/43924/

Church-based counseling is not consigned to the kind of finger-tapping approach that simply waits for the counselee to “come around.” Christ’s agenda for His people is much broader than that. Though much biblical counseling is reactive, we are not mainly to be responders but pursuers, like Jesus. (Robert Jones)

I'd hoped to spend a day or so touring the countryside around Vik but circumstances conspired against us. In the end I managed about a minute as we passed through. This was a very quick handheld shot with the Zeiss 18mm in pouring rain and gusting winds. The lens was covered in water in seconds but its not really a shot where every scrap of detail was important. Its fairly generic as shots from this area go by I still quite like it. Its miserable weather here so I've been going through the computer binning all sorts and thats when I came upon this one. I was initially just going to consign it to the bin but B&W processing gave it a nicer feel.

The spirit of Bayline?

The days of buses lined up on the Strand in Torquay awaiting passengers is now consigned to history. And the number of buses using this now much changed thoroughfare is considerably fewer. Opportunities for taking shots of the buses that do pass through can be hit or miss, as the new traffic lights at the bottom of Fleet Street can cause traffic to back up. I dropped lucky in catching Torbay Buses Mercedes Sprinter 42 (Bus Times shows this as an Atlas Tourline, but the bus carries EVM UK badges on the rear) as it worked a 64 service. The sight of a small bus carrying palm trees on its sides and front evokes memories of a previous generation of Torbays public transport.

The driver cranes out of the cab window as he slowly reverses his steed onto the waiting stock. An ordinary everyday sight at the time but now largely consigned to history at the Cross.

With the Up Highlander (1M16) Caledonian Sleeper service delayed by over two hours due to a "technical issue" at Edinburgh it was unfortunate that it was one of Freightliner's tatty Class 90s on the front rather than a smart 92. However, Skodas hauling Mk3/Mk2 (sleeper) stock will be consigned to the history books before too long, so a photograph for posterity if nothing else.

Freightliner Class 90, 90 044, flies through Hartford with the 1M16 Inverness, Fort William and Aberdeen service to London Euston - running 125 Late at this point.

90044 had only recently returned to service (early July) after being out of action for about nine months at Basford Hall will wheelset issues. This was its first run on the Highlander in almost a year.

For a change, a few black and white images. Whilst I spent my 2 odd months getting rid of a large quantity of books, I made time to purge external drives and memory sticks for photos either to post or consign to the trash box.

507032 leaves Southport with the 2U47 1709 to Hunts Cross just as she has done for many many years previously.

The blue hour makes for a beautiful backdrop of this pretty conventional railway scene.

Note the new order of the 777s in the carriage sidings.

By early 2024 the 507s will be consigned to history.

92044 on the beds - a sight that was expected to be consigned to history by now.

The delays to the introduction of the Mk.5s has meant 044 has been able to work the Sleeper for longer than initially expected. 044 is not expected to receive the mods for Mk.5 haulage, so it'll soon be limited to freight duties (and charter work?) once the new stock turns up.

Unfortunately, it didn't cover itself in glory on this occasion. The loco worked 1C11 to Carstairs before being failed during the reversal onto the back of 1M11 from Glasgow. 92028 propelled 1M11 onto us instead before leading us down (or Up?) the WCML. 86101 turned up on a stock move to Edinburgh, so it collected 044 and took it back to Polmadie. It has since been moved to Craigentinny for attention.

Ésta es la hora de transbordar las consignas poéticas eternas;

de trasvasar de un cuenco a otro cuenco las genuinas esencias de los pueblos;
