A one-day drama for everyone but especially Mark and his wife in Florida who earlier this year successfully nurtured 4 out of 8 Monarch caterpillars to adulthood!
We have been looking for Monarch caterpillars for some weeks now. This morning we found 3, then 4 and then 6! The photo above shows 3 of the 6 munching on Milkweed in the garden.
By lunchtime it was clear that there was nowhere near enough Milkweed to go round. See photo below!! So an appeal went out on our local community internet forum asking if anyone had 'unoccupied' plants. Four replies came back that their plants were already wiped out. However, two came back from people who had spare capacity.
By late afternoon, there seemed to be only 4 caterpillars remaining and remarkably - only 7 hours after discovery - NO Milkweed. The Monarchs had scoffed the lot, so some urgency ensued. A suggestion had been made that cucumber skins could keep them going for a while. So we transferred the survivors to a container, see below. As of this evening they are re-homed onto fresh plants about a 10 minute walk away.
It was the best we could do.
