he London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames, in London, England. The entire structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft).

It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over 3.5 million people annually. When erected in 1999, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until surpassed first by the 160 m (520 ft) Star of Nanchang in 2006, and then the 165 m (541 ft) Singapore Flyer in 2008. It is still described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel" (as the wheel is supported by an A-frame on one side only, unlike the Nanchang and Singapore wheels).

The London Eye, or Millennium Wheel, was officially called the British Airways London Eye and then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye. Since 20 January 2011, its official name is the EDF Energy London Eye following a three-year sponsorship deal.

The London Eye is located in the London Borough of Lambeth at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The site is adjacent to that of the former Dome of Discovery, which was built for the Festival of Britain in 1951.

The wheel's 32 sealed and air-conditioned ovoidal passenger capsules, designed and supplied by Leitner-Poma, are attached to the external circumference of the wheel and rotated by electric motors. Each capsule represents one of the London Boroughs, weighs 10 tonnes and holds 25 people, who are free to walk around inside the capsule, though seating is provided. The wheel rotates at 26 cm (10 in) per second (about 0.9 km/h or 0.6 mph) so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes. It does not usually stop to take on passengers; the rotation rate is slow enough to allow passengers to walk on and off the moving capsules at ground level. It is, however, stopped to allow disabled or elderly passengers time to embark and disembark safely.

This is a photograph from the seventh annual Donadea 50KM Ultramarathon which was held in Donadea Forest, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 13th February 2016 at 10:00. The race was also an International Association of Ultrarunners Silver Label Event and the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) National 50KM Championships. The race completes 10 loops of a very well known 5KM trail around the circumference of the forest. Most of this trail is in very good condition with good conditions underfoot for the entire 5KM stretch. The start-finish area is located close to the coffee shop area in the center of the park beside the now ruined and abandoned Donadea Castle. This year, like all previous events, was a fantastic event with great support around the course for the athletes. However the structure of the course with the repeated loops makes a great atmosphere for the runners themselves with great camaraderie being shown amongst all of the competitors. This is one of the most popular 50KM races in Ireland. A garmin GPS link is available here [connect.garmin.com/activity/70206204]

If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Summers seem to have gotten warmer and more humid (regrettably English doesn't have the word "humider") in Hokkaido. In the 1990s, a day over 30C was highly unusual but now it's relatively common. Hokkaido is an island (about the size and population of Ireland) and so is humid in the summer. Especially if you're from California with its hot, arid summers. Naomi and I lived in California for over 17 years (and I'm originally from there) and we're not used to humidity. The cats are very much against the whole idea of humidity, and it turns out it's not very good for them either. To help us and the cats, we decided to have an air conditioner installed. Here is the installation about 1/3 of the way done. It should be completed today... Just in time for the cool Hokkaido fall to start. But next year, we'll be ready!

Your climate control system is one of the most critical components inside your homes since it gives an ameliorating and loosening up component in your home. I bought this print very cheap on a market. It is a lithograph by Prahl, the title is BORGUNDS KIRKE i Leidal B.S.. Schirtz pinx, Lund lith.

The lithograph may be dated to 1848 or 1873. It may be from a series of ten views commissioned by I.C.Dahl based on sketches mostly made by his former German student Frantz Wilhelm Schirtz (1813-1887). Asked by Dahl, he came to Norway in 1836 to draw and take measurements of the remaining wooden medieval churches. Borgund was one of them (he also visited Urnes, Heddal and Vang church, before it was taken to pieces and moved out to be set up again in Karpacz, Poland).

This wooden church was built in medeival times 1150-1300. Three small window in the roof have been added much later. A new church was built nearby in 1864 and the old one restored at the same time. At this stage the little windows and some other alterations were removed. This image, and as far as I know, just two photographs show the church before the restoration. As it happens, I also own one such photograph, a stereocopic view by Knud Knudsen.

The Borgund stave church is iconic and photographed in large format by both K.Knudsen and other landscape photographers like Axel Lindahl. A number of other medieaval stave churches have been restored or styled after it. Today there are only 27 stave churches remaining in Norway.

Gloat - A vintage Sandvik in just fiiiiiiiiine condition

Some of you might have noticed that I am bit of a Sandvik fan and that I am also occasionally working on documenting the various models Sandvik churned out.

Well, living in neighboring Finland I have been surprised how few of the old Sandvik saws I have found and how little they seem to vary in tooth configuration. Most seem to be full width saws and almost every Sandvik hand saw I have seen has been filed crosscut at between 5 and 7 TPI.

This one is not a big exception. It is a straightback Sandvik model no 270 measuring 24 inches and filed at 6 TPI.

This saw might not appear too appealing at first glance. But in fact this example is in near original condition. It has seen use as evidenced by the dullish teeth. But I think it has spent most if it's existence hanging from a wall.

The saw plate is distinctively breasted as were the high end saws. The teeth does not look they have ever been resharpened and the saw plate is dead straight, both at the top and the bottom.

The apple handle with the distinctive dragons is also entirely intact (mind you I have not as of yet seen a single wooden handle on a Sandvik saw that would have been broken).

The two etches are very much alive and kicking and the orange-hazed sheen on the saw plate was a combination of surface rust and protective oil so Iit did clean up very well.

The 24-inch models are by no means rare, but this is the first I have seen in this condition and with teeth cut like this. The very common factory configuration for the Finnish saw market seems to have been high, pointy teeth for coarse work with green wood. Therefore I am happy to see a different and lower shape on the teeth.

I have not been able to advance very much on my theories regarding dating Sandvik saws according to the medallions.

But I do believe that one of the oldest medallions made is the one featuring nothing more than a capital S and the company name in Swedish.

The next to follow would the medallion on this very saw. Here we have the company name written in Swedish followed by the fish and hook and the place of origin.

The medallion and nuts on this saw as well as older ones are nickel plated brass, just like Atkins did at one point. I have other saws where the nuts are worn enough to display the brass.

As far as the etches goes, I believe this variation to be an older one. Every older Sandvik saw has two main etches, the left being the quality guarantee and the right verifying the plate configuration and steel quality. On later saws, often found with plastic or laminated handles, there is a third etch which advices against setting the tooth from the base (which is very sound advice as the devilishly hard steel on Sandvik saws can break if set incorrectly).

If I am right about my theory, the oldest etch variation (I am ware of) places the model number in between the two large etches, whereas later two or three etch combinations have the model number placed at the lowest part of the "SANDVIK" etch, just below the fish and hook. As this area of the saw plate is very exposed to the workpiece, these saws have often lost the lowest part of the etch.

So, based upon theories regarding medallions and etches I would think this saw was made no earlier than the 1940s. If anyone has better information I'd be happy to hear it.

Do I need to say that I think the Sandvik saws are some of the best I have tried. I mean they absolutely and fully compare to the Atkins', Disston's, Simonds', W&McPs and others.

This saw still has reasonably sharp teeth and without sharpening or setting I have tried it out a few times. The performance is excellent. The saw tracks easily, cuts effectively and provides a balanced and very enjoyable feedback where the breasted plate is constantly engaged with the workpiece. And the tensioning is very good.

Aynye Aman, 15, is being given iron and folic acid supplements by her teacher Etenesh Sime at Haile Aba Marsa school in Sire, Oromia, Ethiopia.

The programme is supported by UNICEF in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and funds from the Canadian Government.

Adolescent girls are given the supplements each week over a 3 month period at 12-week intervals to prevent anaemia, a condition which can cause fatigue and fainting.

Ayne had decided against taking the supplements when they first became available, believing rumours that they caused infertility. Her experience, and encouragement from her teacher helped change her mind. “I wish I had taken them earlier now,” she says. “It's not like everything has turned around but there's slow progress. I just wish I taken it earlier. Now I'm feeling better and looking forward to the next round.”

When asked about challenges accessing healthy food, Aynye said. "We are poor so we aren't getting diverse food, including lack of meat and milk which is why the supplements are so useful."

Ayne wants to be a psychologist when she’s older. “I want to help children express themselves and improve their mental health.”

Front Of An Old Philco Ford Air Conditioner. This particular model looks very similar to the ones that have the nicer outside case, like the one at the old gas station (it can be found in the Philco Ford Photoset) this one however, is one of the older styled ones before they changed the way the outside looked.

After weighing the pros/cons of a partial vs complete restoration, I choose the latter.

Note the condition of the shingles. Progressive insurance (Homesite insurance) dropped our insurance giving us a list of reasons. We fixed the items on that list. They then dropped us a 2nd time for new reasons not included in the first list, including "curling shingles" on my roof. The shingles certainly aren't perfect, but do these look like something that's going to fly off my roof and cost an insurance company a lot of money? Of course, we survived Hurricane Irene AND the post-Irene flood storms JUST FINE ... With zero water in our house. Progressive did not even cite our roof the first time they dropped us. Quite simply, Progressive Insurance/Homesite insurance are ASSHOLES. The roof sure as hell does not need to be re-done if it is functioning just fine. Plus, I just patched it with roof cement to strengthen it up even more! Be smart. Stay away from Progressive. Their low prices aren't worth it. The State Corporation Commission has been notified, but since Virginia is a Republican state, our regulatory agencies barely have any teeth.

The tree touching the roof on the right is an example of tree maintenance I did myself with the pole saw.

You can see some of the $3 Home Depot solar lights that we put on the pathway (once you get out of the range of the street light).

Leaves still everywhere from our tree removal.

Also since then, additional gutter guards have been deployed, and they are uniformly and 100% covering the front gutters at least. Had to cut some into custom-sized pieces to get full coverage.

Homesite insurance sucks. Homesite sucks. Progressive insurance sucks. Progressive sucks.

Degraded plant condition caused by overgrazing and drought conditions.

Plant Productivity and Health

Improper fertility, management, or plants not adapted to site negatively impact plant productivity, vigor, and/or quality.

What is it?

Plants established in locations where the climate, soils, or moisture availability are unfavorable can be stressed and may not thrive even with excellent management. Natural events such as drought or cultural practices such as grazing and mowing can cause plant stress. Improper management (e.g., exorbitant plant populations)are a stressor that can affect plant productivity and health. Plants under stress are more susceptible to disease and insect damage. Symptoms of poor plant vigor and health may include slow growth, discoloration of leaves, wilting or drooping foliage, leaf drop, root pruning, changes in growth form and discolored roots, and even plant death.

Why is it important?

To meet productivity and conservation goals, it is important that plants are adapted to the site on which they are growing, established in proper populations, provided with enough nutrients, water, and sunshine, and protected from excessive levels of stress.

What can be done about it?

Using conservation practices can help establish and maintain plant productivity and health. Assistance from a crop specialist, grazing land specialist, forester, or biologist may be needed to set realistic production and conservation goals that consider species suitability, soils, climate, management options, and local data for similar cropping/forestry systems. The NRCS Web Soil Survey (websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm) is a source of soils information for the growth of crops and trees. Extension programs and educators from local universities are resources for cultural and management practices that keep plants healthy and productive. Nutrient management guides the rate, source, timing, and placement of nutrients as needed to meet production and health goals. Integrated pest management provides techniques to detect, avoid, and treat pests and diseases. Forestry conservation practices can remove and replace unhealthy trees and treat woody debris to reduce risks from insects and diseases. Conservation practices in cropping systems address soil problems such as erosion, compaction, low organic matter, or contaminants through the use of cover crops, new crop rotations, or changes in tillage and/or harvesting methods. Conservation practices in grazing systems can assist in alleviating stressors such as plant vigor and reduced production yields by increasing grazing distribution, managing forage stubble heights, and providing adequate rest periods during seasonal growth variations.
