This cucumber slice (which I stuck on my living room window), backlit by the currently rare sun, was my first idea for the Macro Monday theme "B&W", but I wasn't happy with the black and white processing result - I had hoped to see a distinctive pattern or structure in close-up, but a cucumber slice does not have a particularly distinctive pattern which could have looked good in b&w (unlike leaves with their nervure, for instance). In fact its structure appears to be rather chaotic, maybe because cucumbers contain so much water.
So for me this had to be in colour. I processed it in Nik's Color Efex (I used the Cross Processing and Foliage filters), and Analog Efex (Bokeh filter to blur the edges).

"Gurkenscheibe auf Fenster, von der Sonne beleuchtet" - und eigentlich eine Scheibe Gewächshaus ;-) Bis es die ersten Gurken aus der Region gibt, ist es ja noch ein Weilchen hin.
Meine erste Idee für das Macro-Monday-Thema "B&W", aber hier gefiel mir die SW-Umsetzung nicht so richtig. Ich hatte mir ein spannendes Muster in der Nahaufnahme erhofft, das sich in SW gut hätte machen können, aber die Gurkenstruktur ist doch recht chaotisch, vielleicht weil Gurken so viel Wasser enthalten.
Hier musste es einfach Farbe sein ;-). Bearbeitet in Niks Color Efex (Cross-Processing- und Foliage-Filter) und Analog Efex (Bokeh-Filter für die Extra-Unschärfe am Bildrand).

The mighty asteroid Cucumis, a space traveller from the faraway Cucurbitaceae galaxy, is finally about to enter Earth's stratosphere. Will it burn out or will Earth face its deadly impact?
Well, the latter was the case, but Cucumis' impact went unnoticed by 99 percent of all Earthlings. It left, however, a notable mess on my photo table... The theme is "Peel", and what looks like a huge watermelon is a thin strip of cucumber peel. The resemblance doesn't come as a surprise, though, because melons and cucumbers (and also zucchini and pumpkins) all belong to the gourd family.
The idea was to backlight the cucumber peel and make it look like a planet. To achieve that effect, I put the peel directly around the front part of my small LED flashlight but it didn't stay in place. So I used an elastic band and wrapped it around the peel and the flashlight. That did the trick but the results still looked a little boring. So today, I had the idea to use coloured light and make the longer part of the cucumber peel that was wrapped to the side of the small flashlight look like a red-hot comet's tail. Focus stacking yielded the best results in defining the rather soft pattern a cucumber peel has and it also allowed me to better control the transition into blur on the comet's tail.
The diameter of the flashlight's front part is 1,5 cm / 0,59 inches.

New-Delhi (Inde) - La "momordica charantia », c'est ce légume vert au premier plan de la photo. Une sorte de courge amère. On l'appelle aussi concombre indien.
Ce ne sont pas les légumes qui m'intéressaient pour cette photo. J'ai été attiré Par la pancarte en hindi qui était pour moi une légende à elle seule, localisant la photo.
Mais ce n'était pas suffisant sous peine d'obtenir une photo insignifiante. Il me fallait un second élément d'information pour localiser plus encore cette image. Je me suis posté devant l'inscription. J’ai attendu quelques instants qu'une indienne passe sur la partie gauche. Je n'ai pas attendu plus de 20 secondes et cette femme en sari jaune est apparue.
Comme l'ardoise était l'élément principal, la mise au point a été faire sur elle pour que le reste dans la scène soit légèrement floue. Pas trop quand même ; juste ce qu'il faut pour que l'on comprenne au premier coup d'oeil que nous sommes sur un marché.
Promotion on the "momordica charantia"!
New-Delhi (India) -The "momordica charantia" is this green vegetable in the foreground of the photo. A kind of bitter gourd. It is also called Indian cucumber.
It's not the vegetables that interested me for this photo. I was attracted by the slate in Hindi which was for me a legend in itself, locating the photo.
But it was not enough under penalty of obtaining an insignificant photo. I needed a second piece of information to further locate this image. I stood in front of the registration. I waited a few moments for an Indian to pass on the left side. I didn't wait more than 20 seconds and this woman in a yellow sari appeared.
As the slate was the main element, the focus was made on it so that the rest of the scene is slightly out of focus. Not too much all the same ; just what is needed to understand at first glance that we are on a market.

For me, there is hardly a more refreshing summertime snack - apart from watermelon cubes - than cucumber slices, slightly peppered, salted, seasoned to your liking - or just plain... or in a salad (and cucumber and watermelon and tomatoes are a great salad team, too!). Especially now, when the small, super tasty, locally grown ones are available. The only one thing I've never done, yet, is to put them on my eyes ;-) Did you know that both melons and cucumbers are curcurbits? They are part of the gourd family, "a plant family consisting of about 965 species in around 95 genera" (Wikipedia). Just like squash, pumpkins, zucchini, even Luffa (or loofah), which is used as a sponge. The Spreewald region in Eastern Germany is
famous for its pickled cucumbers aka gherkins. Last but not least, my paternal grandmother used to make her own pickled cucmbers, they were salty and sour, and I loved them (still do, but they are not as good as the ones my grandmother made).
Technicalities: Small slice of cucumber, diameter as stated above, on a scratched glass table, lit from below, camera handheld. The slice was about 7 mm / 0,275591 thick. I used a very bright LED lamp to light it from below, and the distance between table and lamp was really short, so the light was rather glaring. I figured a thicker slice would be better. Processed in my usual order, first enhancements via PS in Viveza which I applied to the slice only: No brightening this time, I even decreased the contrast a little, and enhanced the structure of the slice. Then, in (on?) a new Viveza layer, I increased contrast and structure for the background only, which I've also darkened quite considerably. Next step were "Local Adjustments" in ON1 Photo RAW: I increased the vibrance, details, and added a slight green tinting (as the slice was a little on the yellow side due to the bright backlight) to the slice only. Back to PS, where I added the thin green frame and my signature.
I realise that this would have made a nice Star Trek story, too ("Captain, there is an unexplained round object blocking our vessel's path!" "Uhura, get Spock!"), but since I've already stretched your patience with my previous upload...

Le pied de cette plante fut acheté au marché hebdomadaire à un prix fort avantageux. N'ayant point de jardin, je l'ai planté dans un grand pot. J'adore contempler ce genre de fleurs, et j'adore non moins les concombres, toujours bien frais et croquants dans la bouche.
Momordica charantia, la Margose, le Melon amer, le Concombre amer ou encore le Momordique, est une espèce de plantes à fleurs de la famille des Cucurbitaceae. C'est une plante potagère grimpante cultivée dans les climats chauds ou tempérés en annuelle.
Le terme « margose » désigne la plante et le fruit ; la plante est parfois nommée margosier qui désigne en créole de l'océan Indien le Mélia (Melia azedarach. L).
Le fruit, la feuille et les graines sont comestibles et amers (le mucilage rouge qui entoure la graine est la seule partie douce de la plante). Cette amertume provient des momordicines, substances proches de la quinine. La Margose est connue pour ses qualités culinaires et pour ses propriétés thérapeutiques en médecine traditionnelle, notamment dans le traitement du diabète et de certains cancers.
Elle contribue également à développer une meilleure tolérance au glucose et réduire le cholestérol.
