Conceptual Gardens - Elements of Life. Designed by Bill Wilder. Gold Medal winner and Best Conceptual Garden winner.
(high contrast/overhead light set up combined with ambient lighting).
Nudism and sexual content seem to tie hand in hand within the brains of the narrowminded.
Nudism is very misunderstood in general.
My conceptual series is on the feeling of determination. Determination is a firmness of purpose. Overcoming challenges in life requires this feeling in order to keep going. A person must stay determined to achieve the trivial things in life such as getting through an illness or running for a certain distance or even simply getting chores done. Determination is also shown in sports and competitive fields. With this, I thought the racing of motocross bikes was an excellent way to show the feeling determination.
Racing a motorized bike seems easy, but it is actually quite dangerous. There are tight corners and steep hills to turn and go up or go down on. This requires skill and a sense of determination in order to undertake these challenges. In the first image, the racer is dealing with the fact that he has to go through the mud and water, which could hinder his abilities later on, in order to keep going. He’s determined to maintain his position in the race and hopefully get himself further. The second image shows the racer’s determination to maintain his balance while getting up the final stretch of a steep hill. The third image is racer thinking if he should take the challenge of going up the hill or going the easy, longer way. His determined stance gives the feeling that he’ll take on the challenge and make his wake up. The fourth image shows a racer going up the steep hill, giving the feeling that he’s determined to stay on his bike and make it the top. The fifth image is a racer who, through his determination to take up the challenge, made it to the top of the hill. To give all the images a serious feeling, I downed the brightness, upped the contrast, and fixed up the levels of the light to dark areas.
This is a self-portrait parody of all the portraits I’d digested growing up on rock and roll, glam, and heavy metal. I enjoy characters and my time in L.A. lent itself to looking like what ever I felt like at any particular hour. Anyway, I put a Contax 645 on a tri-pod and set it on a 10 second timer. I would run in an out of the frame and strike a new pose per frame. There are two c stands at my sides that allowed me to run long pieces of tape vertically down my right and left in the estimated plane of focus I was standing in. I used those as a guide for focusing. The backdrop is a white seem-less that had reflected color splashed on to it by placing yellow and green gels over strobes that lit pieces of broken mirrors; (that I spread all over the floor behind me). The lighting from the front is a clamshell formation of two large soft boxes. I used Pro Foto 7a Strobes with Pocket Wizard remotes. It’s a traditional color print with the old Kodak 100S cross-processed to pop the greens and yellows. I actually drew blood on this one…if you look at my middle finger. What a jerk.

I made this pool of water at my parking. The subject is "sometime it's good to look down while walking."
This image captures the concept of the blending of shape and colour. Without depth, we define objects we see with both, and what we percieve shifts when there are no clear borders between the two.
