With more time to kill, Jack and I checked out Paul Allen's Living Computer Museum and saw old home computers and mainframes, many of which allow interaction.

Built in 1955, the 10-by 10-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory included high-tech data acquisition and analysis systems. The reliable gathering of pressure, speed, temperature, and other data from test runs in the facilities was critical to the research process. Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s female employees, known as computers, recorded all test data and performed initial calculations by hand. The introduction of punch card computers in the late 1940s gradually reduced the number of hands-on calculations.

In the mid-1950s new computational machines were installed in the office building of the 10-by 10-Foot tunnel. The new systems included this UNIVAC 1103 vacuum tube computer—the lab’s first centralized computer system. The programming was done on paper tape and fed into the machine. The 10-by 10 computer center also included the Lewis-designed Computer Automated Digital Encoder (CADDE) and Digital Automated Multiple Pressure Recorder (DAMPR) systems which converted test data to binary-coded decimal numbers and recorded test pressures automatically, respectively. The systems primarily served the 10-by 10, but were also applied to the other large facilities.

Engineering Research Associates (ERA) developed the initial UNIVAC computer for the Navy in the late 1940s. In 1952 the company designed a commercial version, the UNIVAC 1103. The 1103 was the first computer designed by Seymour Cray and the first commercially successful computer.

"THE" IBM PC. This machine marked the beginning of the era of the PC.

PC's became modular and the parts and software became standardized and interchangeable, and therefore inexpensive for both business and personal use. This one machine is where the entire modern age of computers really began.

It also spawned an epic war between IBM's PC and Apple Computer's MAC, that still rages some 30 odd years later.

Laptop is sitting on a Zaltman Notebook cooler. It helps about 5C, bought it when I was having some overheating problems. Turns out that the laptop was clogged up with dust, but I prefer the loan drone of the laptop cooler to the higher pitch the laptop makes. Thats assuming I can even hear it over the Boston Speakers :)

I made our little guy a duct tape MacBook. Read more about it on Aesthetic Outburst.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I may or may not have done a bit of a celebratory stationary dance when I finally found a picture of this jacket online in 2018. It has always driven me crazy that I never was able to figure out who or what this jacket was sold with. I got it long ago, probably in 2011 when I first started collecting dolls again. But for some reason, I feel like I may have owned it as a kid. That is a bit more unlikely, since I stopped buying/collecting dolls around 2005. This was something I got secondhand, which makes it even more unlikely that something so new was already at the flea market (although not entirely impossible). I for the longest time was convinced that this was a Fashion Fever item due to its quality and trendy styling. While I was wrong about that, I did have the right time frame in mind. The ironic thing is I almost got this mall at Toys 'R' Us as a kid. I remember being torn between picking it out or my Fantasy Tales Castle. In the end I got the castle, which is surprising since you'd think I would have had more practical use for the mall. I think the reason I opted to not get the mall was because it really didn't' come with "enough" accessories for my liking. I'll be honest, I got spoiled by Bratz doll playsets by that time, which were packaged with oodles of high quality goodies. I hope one day to have this mall playset, especially since it would be a lot of fun to use for photos. But for now, I'm really content knowing what this jacket originally went to, and it will be sure to find its way onto one of my dolls in the future--its so my kind of style doll item!

Got this little gem on eBay for about $50. Fresh install of the OS and works beautifully. To be honest, it's my favorite laptop now -- even though it dates back to 1998.
