Marni Thompson (L), NRCS soil health specialist, examines crop roots where compost extract is applied in the field. Notice soil sticking to roots showing the formation of glomalin, a sugar that helps to glue soil aggregates together creating stable soils that are able to infiltrate and store more water. Larry Johnson, Shawn Preputin, and Alec McIntosh, farmers, create compost extract that is applied to their crop fields to bolster soil microbes and improve soil health. Hill County, MT; June 2022

Lucy posing by our new indoor composter. The shaking head is because we just opened the top of it and the ripe smell has assaulted her sensitive terrier nose. WE haven't exactly worked the kinks out of what was promised to be "an odorless unit".

A composting facility that can accept digeste--the end byproduct of the biogas production process in an anaerobic digester. Watch the rows of compost get turned with this huge machine!
I am digging up perennials from my garden, potting them in mixture of compost and potting soil. Mark Cullen, Canada's Garden Guru, calls compost "black gold".
I received a "Bio-Orb" for my birthday from Mindy and Juan. We put it together over the course of a few days because it's the time of year when mosquitoes swarm in the backyard. I was outside for a minute and I looked down to see about 10 mosquitoes on one leg. Anyway, it's together and filled and I'm very excited to get some easy compost out of it. If you're looking for one, see www.planetnatural.com/site/bio-orb-composter.html.
This pile was started in the rainy season. It contains all the sweepings and prunings from my terrace garden. It has slowly broken down over time. I did have to attack the harder bits like twigs and stems with secateurs. As the pile grew, I would stomp on it like the ancient wine makers used to do to their grapes. Stomp carefully if you are wearing slippers, you don't want to puncture yourself with sharp twiggy ends. Stomping does tend to crunch it down some more. Under this pile of leaves and dried twigs, I have a nice black mixture of broken-down garden leavings, which now I am adding to my compost pot as an accelerator.

I was told when I was a kid that no matter how good looking a plastic cup was to you, you can't have it forever.
