Made these in March with palettes, plastic-tied to each other and the fence at the back. A B C - left to right.
B has the freshest greenery; A the more advanced compost and C the stuff I can use.

I repurposed an old juice pitcher that was less than functional (it dribbled in pour mode) into my compost collector- all the vegetable trimmings, fruit rinds, coffee grinds that make their way to my bins outside.
It's not very big, so I get regular exercise.
I love my worms. They do amazing work. I feed them lots of veggies and scraps (coffee grounds, paper, tea bags) and with a little bit of time and a lot of worms, these scraps become this rich soil - perfect for the garden. It's amazing.

A portion of the windrow has many bags of green leaves that fell after a heavy frost. Some wheat straw was used to add some carbon.
This system uses a small amount of water and compost is the end result, saving water, saving the energy of treating wastewater, and eliminating nutrient release into the watershed.

Foglie: quelle inferiori sono sessili, le altre peduncolate ed entrambe con lacinie sottilissime, ma non capillari.
Fiori: 15-20 mm di diametro di colore rosso vivo all'apice dei rami. Petali più lunghi che larghi. 5 sepali precocemente caduchi. Acheni senza gibbosità sul lato rivolto verso l'alto. Frutto composto, cilindrico, corto. Fiorisce da marzo a giugno.
Comune in tutta l'area mediterranea e sub mediterranea tra le coltivazioni di cereali da 0 a 1.300 mt, infestante.

One morning I woke with a hangover to find that my friends had deposited a bag of compost outside my door.
I'm still awaiting an explanation as to why, and I suspect none will ever emerge...
This is cell 2 on the left with cell 1 just to the right. The cultivator has spread the material out in cell 1 but it has only been worked over once.
Everything thoroughly composted even the shredded paper which covered the materials. The white clumps seen on the compost is the remainder of some latex paint.
Tub here was the first design I experimented with: vents only at top requires periodic mixing to maintain good humidity.
Food scraps, leaf litter and other organic biodegradable matter often make their way into landfills where they decompose and generate methane. Overall, landfills are the third largest source of methane, accounting for about 22 percent methane emissions associated with human activity. In the United States, landfills are the largest source of methane. Separating the organic material out, composting it and capturing the methane before it enters the atmosphere could help reduce that number.

My daughter, Racheal discovered the Lomi Compost System and bought one for me. She's used hers and is very impressed how fast it works on all sorts of food scraps. I will use mine once it gets colder outside since we throw our veggie scraps into the big compost pile behind the Hoop House. This thing can produce compost in 18 hours. Amazing.

The shovel is for shoveling sand down the hole after you use it. Very eco-friendly . . . . but a bit smelly, it must be said.

They make a lot of prepared foods here as well as selling fruits and veggies, this is how they get all their scraps to the giant compost pile!
After unsuccessfully trying to sort out the compost from the worms outside, I decided to just leave half alone and feed the other half (left). This way the worms will slowly migrate over and just leave the compost -- I hope.
Last of the yard waste material spread out and worked in. Hopefully this will be decomposed enough by spring to plant into.

Went to take the compost out and in the dirt bed we use are two huge Tomatillo plants - with fruit! None of the squash I planted has come up - but these are looking good. Sounds like green salsa is in the future.
This is about 15 gallons of pure, rich, organic compost. We put this in the vegetable garden as fertilizer. Read more.

This is my kitchen compost bin. All the organic waste from cooking is added each day and when it is full it goes into the big compost bin until it breaks down to compost.
Compost which is rich in nutrients is used as an additive in gardens and agriculture at which point it comes back to the earth, so completing the cycle.
