Perched confidently on a weathered stump, the Yellow Oriole (Icterus nigrogularis) reveals its striking palette of saturated gold and deep charcoal, a bold contrast against the soft green backdrop. This image was created at Hacienda Guadalajara in La Buitrera, Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, where open woodland edges meet lush Andean foothills. I was drawn to the clean profile and upright posture, waiting for a moment when the bird separated naturally from the background, allowing color and form to carry the frame without distraction.
From a photographic perspective, I focused on precise alignment and background control, using shallow depth to isolate the subject while preserving feather detail along the wing and throat. The angled perch adds structure and leads the eye directly to the oriole’s gaze, while diffused natural light keeps highlights soft and colors accurate. This is the kind of scene I look for as a bird photographer: strong subject, calm light, and a composition that lets the species speak for itself, without excess drama or artificial staging.

I believe this is a Two-barred Warbler, but living in North America I am not very familiar with the Phylloscopidae. I put this to the Bird Identification Help Group here on Flickr to see if I am right, but don’t yet have a conclusive answer.
The sighting was on the Ang Ka nature trail near the highest point of Doi Inthanon National Park in northern Thailand, in late January.

We emulate and learn from the Masters:
Nick Turpin (you tube masterclass video) - Composition and moment.
Joel Meyerowitz: "everything in the frame. Everything"
and sometimes we learn from other art forms; My friend who is an orchestra conductor -- "leave space so the high notes can shine".
I was framing this color filled scene with that man up on the scaffold trying to get everything in check when the other man in his dapper orange sweat shirt comes strolling in through that back door.... pick your center, frame, wait, wait, 3 - 2 -1 - click !!!!!
SOOC - I was tempted to crop out that foreground ceiling, but decided to use it to bring depth and guide the eyes inward.
Put your hand over it and see how the image flattens...
