Before my local shop for electronic components, Labb Elektronik, shut down, they gave away free bags with random stuff. These pictures are the result of sorting the components in these bags.

High wattage resistors. The ones near the camera that look like cork are in fact ceramic. I wonder if they looked like that originally or if they've degraded over time.

MOSE - Floodgates and components of the Venetian Lagoon project
Venice is under serious threat due to the rise in sea level and sinking of land at an alarming rate. The MOSE project will protect the Venetian Lagoon from being submerged by the Adriatic Sea and protect the famous city of Venice and the neighbouring areas from flooding. It is expected to be operational by 2014. MOSE, the Italian word for Moses, is an acronym for Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico, which means Experimental Electromechanical Module. The name aptly alludes to the story of Moses parting the Red Sea. The project will prevent flooding through the installation of 78 mobile gates at three inlets, namely Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia, which will separate the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. The MOSE project also includes strengthening of the coastal areas, raising the quaysides and paving of the city. he first environmental impact study was accepted in 1998 and was improved in 2002. The construction work on the project began in 2003. As of June 2012, 75% of the work at the site has been completed. The project is expected to be fully completed by 2014.
A total of 78 mobile gates are being laid at the bottom of the seabed as part of the MOSE project. They are 28 m long, 20 m wide and will weigh 300 t. The mobile gates being laid at the bottom of the inlet channel are supported by steel and concrete pilings, measuring 500 mm in diameter and 20 m in length, driven into the lagoon bed.
The floodgates consist of a metal box structure. Compressed air is pumped into the structure when a tide of more than 1,10 m height is expected. The air will rise up the barriers to the surface of the water to block the flow of the tide and prevent water from flowing into the lagoon. Floodgates are hollowed at the bottom, to allow the blowing of compressed air. They will be filled with water and lowered into the seabed when there is no harm of flooding. The floodgates at each inlet will function independently depending on the force of the tide expected.
Shimano Alfine hydraulic disc brakes, Brooks B67 saddle, SKS fenders, Alex DM24 rims, Schwalbe Big Apple 2.15 tires. These brakes are outstanding. I have long been a huge fan of Shimano's hydraulic brakes, and the Alfine levers and calipers are as good as it gets. The rear caliper is mounted on the chainstay, which keeps it out of the way of the rack and fender eyelets. While I've gotten used to hydro disc brakes on my mountain bikes, to have them on a traditional-looking touring bike (with a curved, lugged front fork) is really special.

Palatine Chapel, Aachen
The Palatine Chapel in Aachen is an early medieval chapel and remaining component of Charlemagne's Palace of Aachen in what is now Germany. Although the palace itself no longer exists, the chapel was preserved and now forms the central part of Aachen Cathedral. It is the city's major landmark and a central monument of the Carolingian Renaissance. The chapel held the remains of Charlemagne. Later it was appropriated by the Ottonians and coronations were held there from 936 to 1531.[1]
As part of Aachen Cathedral, the chapel is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[2]
Charlemagne began the construction of the Palatine Chapel around 792, along with the building of the rest of the palace structures.[3] It was consecrated in 805 by Pope Leo III in honor of the Virgin Mary. The building is a centrally planned, domed chapel. The east end had a square apse, and was originally flanked by two basilican structures, now lost but known through archaeology. The chapel was entered through a monumental atrium, to the west. The plan and decoration of the building combines elements of Classical, Byzantine and Pre-Romanesque, and opulent materials as the expression of a new royal house, ruled by Charlemagne.
The architect responsible, Odo of Metz, is named in a tenth-century inscription around the dome: Insignem hanc dignitatis aulam Karolus caesar magnus instituit; egregius Odo magister explevit, Metensi fotus in urbe quiescit. Nothing more is known of him. The building he designed has a simple exterior and a complex interior, with a double shell octagonal dome resting on heavy piers, a two-story elevation, and elaborate revetment[4] and decoration.
In 936 Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor of the Ottonian dynasty, took advantage of the chapel's close association with Charlemagne and held his coronation as King of Germany there. Holy Roman Emperors continued to be crowned in the Palatine Chapel until 1531.[1] In 1000, in what was most likely a symbolic exhibition, Otto III placed the tomb of Charlemagne in the chapel and paid homage to his remains.[5]
