For some time now, I’ve been wanting to buy an antique radio, gut it, and make it into a smart speaker I can use to stream jazz all night long. (I sleep with music on all night.)

 

I wanted to get a 1938 Zenith “tombstone” radio like the one used in the TV series, “The Waltons” (see photo) but they are very heavy and would take up my entire nightstand. Then, there’s the fact that one in good condition costs about $3K.

 

For some reason, or another, I was walking through an antique store in the antique district of a town near me on the Jersey Shore this afternoon. I looked down and saw my materiel solution in a display cabinet. It was a 1945 working 5-tube Harold Lifton Company, “Halton 92-1” AM AD/DC radio. The actual working radio part was manufactured by General Electric. They sold inner workings to companies who built their own cases for them and gave them their own names. Best of all, it was only $40.00!!!!!

 

It’s a desktop radio, so it will fit with plenty of room on my nightstand or inside the radio cabinet I purchased at Ethan Allen 25 years ago when I was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. It has a beautiful solid maple case.

 

The first thing I did when I got home was to remove all of the components from the inside. There wasn’t much I could do with an old AM radio. Certainly nothing I’d ever listen to on the AM band. I thought about sanding the case down and completely refinishing it. But then I thought, “This radio has been around for 75 years and every little bump or scratch is part of someone’s story. I brushed out 75 years of dust from inside the now empty cabinet and thoroughly cleaned it with lemon furniture cleaning/restoring solution. It smells really, really good and shines when the light hits it from the right direction.

 

I’m going to have to glue the wooden knobs (wooden!) onto the front of the case since the original electronics that they mounted on have been removed. I don’t want to use screws from behind because they are really old and I’m afraid they might crack if I drive a screw into them. There aren’t any feet on the bottom of the radio so I’ll either use some of those little stick-on rubber feat or a sheet of felt. Probably the rubber feet.

 

Everything I own these days is Apple. So, I’m going to go with the new Apple HomePod Mini which is going to be released in about 10 days. Based on my requirements, this $99.00 product is perfect for streaming jazz from my home music server using Airplay 2 over WiFi. Plus it’s a smart device and I can control any devices I have set up with it. I want the dial to glow like it would when operating as it did when it was an AM functional radio. But, I don’t want to have to run a second power cable into the unit to power an LED. I think I’m going to buy some of those inexpensive battery operated flickering tea lights that restaurants use at tables these days. There’s one that runs for 6 hours, then turns itself off for 18 hours and repeats the sequence. I’d only have to replace the battery once every 3 or 4 weeks.

I've completely reworked the hadware board. The basics remain the FPGA module Terasic, the DE0-Nano. This board contains a lot of I / O lines and is super fast. Everything is on a single-sided PCB. The output transistor drivers ( 20 pieces 500 mA/ 45V outputs ) are in SMD to save board space. The DE0-nano FPGA board is as a Peggy-back board mounted on ther driver PCB. Via the USB connector, the FPGA program can be re-written.

 

What does this interface:

 

* 20 open collector outputs via JP10 and JP11.

 

- Camera meter

- Camera shutter

- X1 flash1 signaal ( manual or TTL mode flash1)

- Q1 flash1 signaal ( TTL mode flash1 ) or X3 flash3 manual mode.

- X2 flash2 signaal ( manual or TTL mode flash2)

- Q2 flash2 signaal ( TTL mode flash2 ) or X4 flash4 manual mode.

- DIR steppen motor board.

- Step steppen motor board.

- Enable steppen motor board.

- 1 Spare output.

- 4 outputs used to drive the color background module. Via JP12

Enc1 connector:

2 inputs from a rotary encode frontplate. Used as general digital input value.

2 inputs from a rotary encode frontplate. Used to move the step motor of the lineaire stage module in manual mode.

 

Range switch input

 

4 input switches to change the analog sensitivity range of the color pot meters.

 

Drive of the H-Bridge color shutter module:

- 6 direct FPGA outputs via JP13 and JP17.

 

Matrix 5X8 keyboard 40 pushbuttons. via JP14 and JP18.

 

LCD1 display 4X20 chars via JP16.

LCD2 display 4X20 chars via JP15.

 

4 I/O connectors via JP2 still no assigned function.

 

Connection via the general GPIO3 connector from the top of the FPGA DE-Nano board.

As part of the team building component of Term 1 Project Management, students are given a box of dollar store objects and a mission: keep a marble moving along a course for as long a time as possible, with it ending up falling into an egg cup. Armed with plastic necklaces, dominoes, bendy straws, a roll of toilet tissue and other priceless objects, teams compete to create the best design to meet the goal. Upon completion, the teams analyze their designs for strengths and weaknesses and process key team dynamic components — How were design decisions made? How were disagreements resolved? How was leadership determined? Did team members contribute equally to the vision and how did they each fare when it came to implementation?

Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014

 

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

 

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

Soldiers, Sailors and Marines from across Active Duty and Reserve Components on Fort Benning and in the surrounding community converged December 4-7 to compete for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. One of a handful of authorized foreign awards, the badge is highly coveted for wear on the US military dress uniform. Qualifying for the badge requires proficiency in physical training, swimming, marksmanship and completion of a 12 mile ruck march. Soldiers and Drill Sergeants from the 98th Training Division (IET) not only competed for the GAFPB, but also lent their administrative, operational and instructional skills to the execution and planning of the event in coordination with the 1-46th Infantry Regiment. Congratulations to those who made the competition a success, and to those who have now earned the right to wear the badge!
