Remark: The Specht, Finney & Skinner Company department store was located at the northeast corner of Main Street (now Lincolnway) and Franklin Street. A large fire sweeping the block in 1885 gave the block the nickname the "Burnt Block."
Although damaged by fire, the building was saved and remodeled. The business originally began in 1876 by A. V. Bartholomew. Claus F. Specht, a new arrival in to Valparaiso in 1871 from Holstein, Germany, worked as a sales clerk for Bartholomew when he opened the store. In 1877, Stephen L. Finney, a nephew of A. V. Bartholomew, joined the business. After Bartholomew retired in 1882, Specht, Finney, and Peter Hesser purchased the business.
Hesser was soon bought out by Specht and Finney in 1883. Hesser then began a business with William Freeman called Hesser-Freeman Company. Later, Specht and Finney formed a new corporation, joining in partnership with L. R. Skinner.
The Tremont House, a Valparaiso inn, previously stood at the location of Hesser, Freeman & Company.

selfesteem.dove.co.za/Articles/Video/Cracking_compliments... | Looking for self-esteem tips to pass on to your daughter? Check out this Dove Self-Esteem video on learning how to give and receive compliments. It is important for teenage girls to remember that beauty isn’t only about how one looks. So, for instance, instead of saying ‘Have you lost weight? You look great!’, say something along the lines of ‘You’re so funny. You always make me laugh’. It is easy for people to take ‘compliments’ about their weight or appearance the wrong way, thus negatively affecting their self-confidence and body image. On the other hand, compliments about personality, personal achievements etc. have a much more positive impact. Watch the video for more helpful tips.

I don't know if I was just around super nice people today or what, but I got a ton of compliments on this outfit! I was pretty excited. It's not a typical outfit for me- I usually don't do dresses with narrow skirts- but it was comfy and I felt cute and it was the perfect thing to cheer up a dreary rainy day- even if my belt and boots were different shades of brown. Oh, well. YOLO and whatnot.
I love the combination of navy and gold, and these mustard-y tights went really well with the dress, I thought. Although every time I wear them, my sister mistakes it for my actual skin color. She insists it's because of the Great Legwarmer Tan of '09.
I wore this for a long day of subbing for fifth grade, rummaging around my sad little library, teaching voice and diction in theatre arts (we did tongue twisters!), aftercare, and a Monday night church service. But I felt cute the whole time- even though my hair exploded in wild rain-curls and I had to pin it up for Emanate. It was still kind of cute!
