Popularly called the Orion Nebula, this stellar nursery is only 1,500 light-years away, making it the closest large star-forming region to Earth.

Because of its brightness and prominent location just below Orion’s belt, M42 can be spotted with the naked eye under very dark skies.

IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. It is a roughly circular HII region centered on the Be star HD 53367. HD 53367 is a young star with twenty times the mass of our Sun. It is classified as a Be star, which are a type of B star with prominent hydrogen emission lines in its spectrum.

This cloud of gas and dust is located about 3,700 light-years away from Earth.

The radiation from the young stars causes the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow with a rich red color and become an HII region. HII regions are so named as they consist of ionized hydrogen (H) in which the electrons are no longer bound to protons. HI is the term used for un-ionized, or neutral, hydrogen. The red glow from HII regions occurs because the protons and electrons recombine and in the process emit energy at certain well-defined wavelengths or colors. One such prominent transition (called hydrogen alpha, or H-alpha) leads to the strong red color.

Within the nebular complex Sh2-292 there are some open clusters and areas of ongoing star formation, particularly along the defined edge.

Supreme Court Complex, Hobart, by Department of Public Works / Peter Partridge won the 25 Year Award for Enduring Architecture at the AIA's 2010 National Architecture Awards.

This building is an exemplary, enduring piece of public architecture that makes a poised contribution to the city of Hobart. The plaza between the two court buildings opens up a diagonal landscape link between St Davids Park above, the adjacent Parliament Square and the Sullivans Cove waterfront.

From Salamanca Place a slate base folds up like a piece of carved landscape and supports two sandstone-clad pavilions. This is a building that is indebted to classicism but carries the burden of a period of architecture much maligned for its material brutality. The use of materials here is super direct and the detailing studious. Inside, the complex is judicially innovative through the planning of four courts in the round. The interior carries the gravity of the building’s function but is human in its detail and scale.

The complex is in remarkably original order because of the skill with which it was designed. Here is a reminder that investment in public architecture has a lasting effect on the city.

I figured while we are feeling 'industrial', it would be a good opportunity to post some images of this amazing complex, taken back in July.

Nestled around the Vltava River, Prague survived virtually intact, while other European cities were flattened during WWII. This is a view of part of Prague Castle and the spires of St. Vitus Cathedral, taken within the world’s largest ancient castle complex and still the seat of political power. The castle was built during the 9th Century and has evolved architecturally as a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and even Spanish styles.

This stunning nebula complex comprises emission and reflection nebulae and is around 5900 light years away. They lie within a very dusty part of the southern Milky Way in Sagittarius.
