“In increments both measurable and not, our childhood is stolen from us -- not always in one momentous event but often in a series of small robberies, which add up to the same loss.”
― John Irving, Until I Find You
This temple complex lies around 2.5km southeast of the egyptian city of Dendera and extends to around 40.000 square meters.
Fenite from the Devonian of Russia.
Fenite is a rare variety of metasomatite, a metamorphic rock formed solely by chemical alteration of previously existing rocks. The type locality for this lithology is the Ediacaran to Cambrian-aged Fen Carbonatite Complex in Norway. Fenites occur next to carbonatite complexes and form by CO2 chemical alteration.
This fenite sample is from northwestern Russia's Lovozero Alkaline Massif (Late Devonian, ~360 to 370 Ma). The dark gray matrix is the fenite. Three minerals occur in the sample as large crystals embedded in fenite: 1) murmanite (= best seen in the photos before & after this one), a rare hydrous sodium titanium silicate (Na2Ti2(Si2O7)O2·2H2O); 2) aegirine (= long, slender black sticks), a type of pyroxene, sodium iron silicate (NaFeSi2O6); and 3) eudialyte (= reddish-purplish colored masses), a rare complex silicate mineral whose formula varies from reference to reference (for example, Na4(Ca,Ce)2(Fe,Mn,Y)ZrSi8O22(OH,Cl)2).

Walking through the mirror maze in the petroleum exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry. I was supposedly imagining myself as a hydrocarbon molecule, and getting lost among the increasingly complex hydrocarbon molecules on the mirrors. I was actually just getting annoyed at all the kids running around, but that's about par for the course.

This lighthouse is located approximately 35 kilometers north of the City of Laoag, Ilocos Norte Province, Philippines. It is located on a small hill overlooking the South China Sea. This structure was built in 1892 and is still operating up to this date. It is considered as the highest lighthouse in the Philippines(in reference to sea level). The lighthouse signals ships that they are on the northwestern corner of the island of Luzon.

The 41 Complex Fires in 2011 consisted of 5 lightning caused fires that burned more than 15,200 acres on the Darby Ranger District of the Bitterroot National Forest. All of the fires were located in the Sapphire Mountains approximately 10 miles east of Hamilton. The largest fire, Up Top, grew to more than 12,300 acres and burned across Skalkaho Highway, closing the road to motorists for several weeks. The fire burned completely around the historic Gird Point Lookout which was saved by firefighters. More than 530,000 gallons of water and 150,000 gallons of fire retardant were dropped on the fires and more than 350 firefighters were assigned to the 41 Complex. The Katas Temple Complex
Nestled away in the eastern part of the great Salt Range, east of Islamabad, lie ancient temples whose beauty has inspired countless travellers for centuries. With the construction of the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway which skirts its edge, it is emerging - fortunately or unfortunately - as a popular tourist destination in the region.
Located in the Chakwal district of Punjab province, this complex is approximately 150 kilometers from Islamabad and can be reached from the capital in less than 3 hours.
It is located on the main road leading from Lake Kallar Kahar to Choa Saidan Shah and is not far from the Kallar Kahar Lake. Built in the 9th-11th century when the Salt Range was part of the powerful Hindu Kingdom of Kashmir, this large complex houses several temples most of which, unfortunately, are in a rather derelict condition. There is also a fortress surrounding a pool. Legend has it that the pool was formed by the tears of the Hindu God Shiva while weeping over his dead wife. According to an Indian website I looked up, the pool reportedly has "magical powers" and is mentioned in the great Indian epic Mahabharata. The Katas Temple Complex used to be a major place of pilgrimage for the Hindus before the partition of India in 1947 and to this day several devotees visit it in Spring every year. There is talk that it may be placed on the World Heritage List and a joint India-Pakistan project to restore and renovate it is under discussion.
According to Gen Cunningham, Katas was considered the second largest holy place in Punjab for Hindu pilgrims after Jawala Mukhi. It is said famous Pando brothers spent 12 years in Katas and built the temples of Satghara. It is said Al-Beruni also spent some time at Katas to learn Sanskrit in a linguistic university which, at that time, was established here. Temples at Katas have been transferred from the federal government to the Punjab Archaeology Department recently.
Katas Raj is also the place where Alberuni attempted to measure the circumference of the Earth, studied Sanskrit and wrote his renowned Kitab-ul-Hind (Book of Hind) which depicted the religion, scientific knowledge, and social customs of Hindus. Paras Nath Jogi drew his last breath on Katas. Jagat Guru Nanak Ji also visited the place on the 1st of Visakh. Katas came to be known as Nanaknawas and was a site of contemplation for many large groups of mystics, ascetics and jogis. According to Hindu beliefs, taking bath in the holy pond at the site washes away all sins and makes man innocent.

The Royal Palace complex is home to some spectacular buildings, including the Throne Hall and Silver Pagoda (home to an "Emerald Buddha" statue). Disappointingly, visitors are not allowed inside most of them.
(65th Commemoration of D-Day on the Hillman site)
Hillman Fortress is located inland near Colleville-Montgomery, formerly known as Colleville-sur-Orne, on the British landingzone codenamed Sword Beach.
Built in 1942, this German occupying forces strongpoint (WN17) is a concrete set of 600 meters long where the headquarters of the 736th Regiment Grenadiers was established. It consists of 18 half buried blockaus connected by underground passageways.
On the evening of 6 June 1944, the British First Suffolk Regiment fought a costly battle to win the Hillman strongpoint, but the Germans had resisted long enough to allow the Wehrmacht 21st Panzer division regroupment and deny General Montgomery the advance into Caen.
On 9 June, Rommel is back on the front and the 21st Panzer division is grouped with two SS units.
The Allied Forces captured Caen after a month of fighting, including heavy Allied air raids.
Hillman site is being restored since 1990 by an association called "Les Amis du Suffolk Régiment".
