The lightbox completed!

So you want to make a pocket studio? Have a look at this DIY Lightbox / Light tent tutorial:

Materials Required:

- foam board ( 5 pieces )

- white duct tape ( 1 roll )

- halogen lights, 50W ( 2 bulbs )

- desk lamps w/ flexible necks ( x 2 )

- sheet of white bristol/poster board ( x 1)

Tools Needed:

- exacto knife

- scissors

Assembly Instructions:

A) Start off by deciding how you want to arrange your box. Cut the foam board into appropriately sized panels.

B) Assemble the box piece by piece, taping both the inner and outer edges of each joint (for added rigidity). Be sure to leave the front face open.

C) Cut a sheet of white bristol board to the width of your assembled lightbox. Tape the board to the lower front edge, then extend the board in a curve toward the top of the back wall. Then tape it at the top. This way, you won't have a visible 'edge' at the back of the lightbox. Subjects will be seemingly placed in front of a white infinity.

D) Assemble your lights on either side of the box, and point the bulbs toward opposite inside faces of the lightbox. Switch on and enjoy! Be sure to set custom white balance. Use with or without a flash too!

Optional Steps:

1) Cut small slats into the front sides of the box so you can 'peek' your lights into the box.

2) Cut a three sided door into the top of the box for shooting from the top and/or lighting from above!

Enjoy!

A visit to Page, Arizona is not complete without a visit to one of the slot canyons! Lower Antelope Canyon is called Hazdistazí, or 'spiral rock arches' by the Navajo. It is longer, narrower and sometimes footing isn't even available, making it a more difficult hike than Upper Antelope. The Antelope Canyons are located in the Navajo Nation and to visit the slot canyon you must use a tour guide that has been authorized by the Navajo Nation.

This was taken in Lower Antelope Canyon and shows the power of the water eroding the Navajo Sandstone. From this location on the slot canyon floor it is 30 to 40 feet of curving Navajo Sandstone to the surface. The guide of the tour gave general guidelines or rules on how to get the best results when shooting in the slot canyons. The guidelines mentioned most often were that when shooting overhead to avoid any direct sunlight on the Navajo Sandstone and also to avoid including any sky in the composition. For this image I ignored his guidelines/rules with the aid of a sturdy and stable tripod, mirror lock up, multiple stop bracketing and a remote release.

"Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic "flowing" shapes in the rock." The description from Wikipedia

Metra 177 for whatever reason crosses the diamonds in Joliet, IL and passes UD Tower, a reminder of what used to be.

Well, it took 8 months, but I think I can declare this one finished. I wanted to get something up, but I'll take more formal photos later. I tried to play with technique as much as I could to bring out as much detail as possible. I honestly didn't think this would be a terribly solid chassis, but he survives a faceplant quite elegantly. Double jointed knees, ball-joint ankles and hips, and articulating feet give this mech the ability to pose precariously in a variety of ways.

Le Mans 2008

With the transition from first-generation LMP spec to the new cars complete, the grid has filled with many new teams and many new cars all chasing the two big-league diesels.

French team Charouz bring an interesting new sound to Le Mans in their new Lola coupe, the shriek of an Aston Martin V12.

New Swiss team Sebah Speedy Racing runs another new Lola coupe in a sharp-looking Rebellion Timepieces livery.

Pescarolo's cars are run by three teams. Despite rule changes to give petrol cars a performance boost, all were quick but well off the big diesel pace.

Oreca bought Courage last year and have continued to develop the LC70, running a Mondrian-esque multi-color Matmut livery and a driver lineup which will become familiar names, Duval, Fassler.

Dome rolls out their new sleek and very fast s102 in plain white (practically begging for some sponsorship)

Two teams bring an Evo version of Porsche's RS Spyder from ALMS, redesigned by former Audi designer Michael Pfadenhauer and wins both LMP2 class Pole as well as the class victory.

Peugeot has worked through the first-year problems on the 908 and is in fierce competition with Audi, and just slightly faster. The Le Mans week got off to a rough start, though, with one of the 908's launching itself backwards through the air and destroying itself on the wall. A new car had to be built from spares and a tub rushed from Peugeot’s shop.

Audi stay with their still-very-competitive diesel V12-powered R10 and run just about the same pace as the Peugeots.

The race is run nearly flat out, Peugeot stretching away from Audi with frenetic pace. Rain in the latter half of the race was an equalizer and the differences in wet stability, fuel efficiency, and tire strategies enabled Audi to catch and eventually pass Peugeot for the win. With some help from Capello and McNish, Tom Kristensen extends his Le Mans record to 8 wins.

Follow along as I retrace the important and interesting prototypes of the Le Mans "LMP" era and the story of Audi's legacy. #legolemans

I could tell you this Rubiks Cube has been completed. Maybe it has? Maybe it hasn't...

1/6 Scale Runway Project, all done............

The History

The first bike I ever built is finally complete. It began with a 57cm Colnago Master Light frame with matching Precisa fork. It was first owned a European racing team, and so was originally painted in their team colors. After a few seasons they upgraded to new framesets, and to prep the current frameset for public sale/use, sent it back to the Colnago factory in Italy for new custom artwork and paint. For those of you familiar with Colnago artwork, this is not the standard, embellished "Art Decor" paint job they usually do; but instead a cleaner, more streamlined, Art-Deco-like, 2-color job. The set was purchased by a private party in Saint Paul, MN, who then sold it to me because it was 2cm too short for him. A freak episode of dumb luck and great timing I think.

Each component was chosen based on a balance between practical performance and visuals that compliment the streamlined frame. I chose aesthetics over a few grams of weight--don't think I could consider this a tribute to the classics or Italian tradition had I chosen to use the most expensive, top-of-the-line, bulky/ugly carbon components. Except for the Conti tires and CK head set, every single component is of Italian descent and silver (alloy) colored.

I decided to add a wooden top to the desk, and I really love the way the wood warmed it up and gave it more depth. We also have pine ceilings on the other side of this loft, so it balances it out.

I'm waiting for this lamp to arrive, I think it will be so fun!

This is the Bandstand at Warrenpoint, Co. Down - complete with moustachioed band members? I think we can safely assume this was taken on a Sunday!

There's a poster on the bandstand, but it's not very clear. I can make out Pierrots and Mr. Fred [something beginning with W? maybe Walmsley?]. I think the date on it is Sunday [??] July [??].
