Vintage pattern somewhat modified. Reprinted in Julia Sanders Tatting Patterns.
I altered the colors from purple, lavender and cream to variegated purple and white. Also omitted another row in the larger back petals. Added a leaf with the same 2 - 2 - 2 pattern of the interior scallops. Several attempts preceded this successful model, it is quite complicated. Worked in vintage size 80 threads.
Cliffe Castle was originally the home of Victorian millionaire and textile manufacturer Henry Isaac Butterfield. Completed in the 1880s the building was funded by the Butterfield family's industrial empire which included wool textile mills and a shipping business that took British goods to Europe, America and China.
The completed house was a showcase of international art and French decoration. It was the scene of many glittering social events. Butterfield family connections included the Roosevelts of America and members of the court of Napoleon III.
In the 1950s the Castle was bought by Sir Bracewell Smith, a local man who became Lord Mayor of London. Sir Bracewell used architect Sir Albert Richardson to turn Cliffe Castle's gardens into a grand public park and remodelled the Castle to be a free museum for the people of the district.
In recent years Cliffe Castle has undergone a major restoration. Visitors can see sparkling Victorian rooms and furniture, paintings and decorative art. Special galleries deal with natural history, archaeology and social history, all of which can be seen along with the internationally important display of stained glass by Morris & Co. The Castle also hosts changing exhibitions from its collections and the community. Family areas ensure there is something for all ages.

Note new sign warning against use of pipes as bridge. Old pipe had a broad flat surface so apparently many did use it as a bridge to the park.
I cannot believe how quickly this flew off the needles. This is all one piece; the effect is achieved by casting off, and then casting on new stitches for the next ring, every six to eight rows. I thought that would be difficult, time consuming, and tedious, but it turned out to be quick and smooth.
This is Malabrigo Silky Merino in the colorway "Smoke" (hence the name of the project); it's a great dark gray (one of my favorite colors) and it's so very soft. I already love it! I will almost certainly make more of these.

With my father in law coming for the holidays, I needed the table cleared, so I finished the puzzle early. Very much enjoyed it. 357:366
The Hogan-Allnoch Dry Goods Co. Building was completed in 1923. It housed one of the city's oldest and largest companies. The building is part of the last intact block of historic structures leading to Union Station and Minute Maid Park. Harris County Commissioners were hoping to get the green light in 2007 to demolish the building and replace it with a parking lot.
In 2007, the building went to auction twice. Once at a price of 3.25 million and later in September at a price of 1.98 million. There were no buyers. The building would cost $150,000 to demolish, but as much as $5 million to restore. County commissioners don't want the cost of demolition to be at the hands of any taxpayers...
Thus the never ending battle, some 5 years later, as to whether it will be preserved for historical reasons or demolished for yet another parking lot, rage on.
After an hour or so of cutting, folding and sticking, the HEY YOU G.U.Y.S packaging is pretty much complete. Here is a semi dark photo for you.
