After a last-minute hectic day in the office at home, I packed up, met Fred and headed for the Fort William sleeper. The sleeper is a huge train that splits at Edinburgh to go to various destinations around Scotland. Unfortunately, the Fort William part of the train at Euston doesn't have a carriage with storage, so people with bicycles have to struggle up at 4am to shift their bikes from the Inverness part of the train to the newly attached storage carriage on the Fort William train. We cunningly avoided the disrupted night's sleep by taking the folding bikes, each of which fits neatly beside a bed. Hooray! The folders also have the added advantage that if we got stuck for any reason we could pop them on a bus or in a taxi. In the end, we didn't need to do this at all on the holiday.
A hotel being built right next door to the Blood Compact Monument makes the place noisy during construction. Very soon, the place will feel totally closed in once the building is completed. There is a good view of the beach and the sea from behind the monument though, as seen here. At the far end is the Pamilacan Island. We are scheduled to go there at 05:45 the next morning for a spot of dolphin watching. (Bohol- Tagbilaran, Philippines, May 2013)
My search for a worthy, lighter, more compact alternative to the big, clunky DSLR (an imaginary tech column write-up):
I took the Olympus out again today. I really wanted to give it a good slog this time. It was a nice day for it. None of this gloomy Melbourne weather crap that often lingers every time I shoot. I'm unwell so I didn't venture out very far - off I went to the Melbourne CBD.
What did I get out of today?. Good old Vitamin D, people watching, a bit of exercise, and...mixed emotions. I was excited to be an Olympus owner. I had high hopes - I heard so many great things about the Micro Four Thirds sensor. Also, the body is light. It is compact - hours of shooting no longer becomes an issue!. Goodbye RSI. And of course, the retro style body is an aesthetic bonus. My gripe?. I found myself longing for the Nikon D600 (upgrade imminent!). I was torn. I loved the size, weight and aesthetic quirks of the Olympus OMD EM-10, but I wanted the performance and functionality of my DSLR.
The Details...
On the bright side, the EM-10's 81 point AF system is fantastic. 3-axis Image Stabilisation? - GREAT! It mitigated shakes at slower shutter speeds. Coupled with the 25mm (35, 50mm equivalent) lens, the EM-10 is beautiful for portrait shots. What else? The basic ISO range served sufficiently for low light conditions and noise was well handled. The real bonus for me though is the wi-fi connection to Smartphones - I haven't owned a camera body that has this feature and it is very handy; adjust your settings straight from the phone and import your photos. Et voila! Instant high quality social media upload!. There is obviously some good fun to be had!.
My verdict: It lacks in so much that a DSLR (even an entry level one) doesn't. But that's just it. It isn't a DSLR. If I am to look at this objectively, the EM-10 does A LOT for something so compact. For the field it plays in, it truly does perform. Benchmark it against a DSLR and you will undoubtedly be disappointed. It isn't a league for league comparison and I know I'm being unfair. But let's be real; Image quality is what we're really losing out on here and quite frankly, it isn't something an enthusiast or seasoned professional alike would ever forego just to be RSI-free. I'll take all of the RSI, thank you very much!.
So, where to from here?. Seems I've come to a sticky point in my search for a worthy lighter, compact alternative to my full-frame Nikon DSLR. Perhaps I should stop the search and learn to love the bulk?. Or maybe...just maybe, I hear the distant cries of the Sony Alpha A7S MKII begging to be loved?. Only time will tell.

Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Overdam’ is a feather reed grass cultivar which is noted for having variegated foliage featuring green leaves with creamy white margins. It is further distinguished by having a more compact size (2-4’ tall) and for its pinkish-green flowers.
Overdam is cool-season grass. Cool-season grasses put on most of their growth in spring before temperatures begin exceeding 75 degrees Fahrenheit and in the fall when temperatures cool down. They generally maintain good color through the summer but won't grow much when it is hot.
Cut back cool season grasses in very early spring.
Patio garden, east. Hybrid (C. arundinacea x C. epigejos) Noted for its variegated foliage, early bloom, vertical lines and ability to grow in wet soils. Planted in 2008. Seeds are sterile. Had 2, one remains in 2021.

I think this image gives a feeling of a place, potential motion as well as stillness. I'm happy with the image because of the industrial feelings from the colours and textures.
I've wanted to take this shot for awhile, but never had a camera with me, was in a rush or it felt too busy to get the SLR and stable to have enough depth of field to show the stairs and keep the texture in the wall. Now that I got a compact for Chirstmas, I was able to get the shot!

With semis on Orford Road as a backdrop, Waterhead attack the Rylands line at Arnold Clark Park during a Third Division fixture in amateur rugby league's Kingstone Press Cider National Conference League. Rylands, the hosts, won 64-18. Sharks' ground is so compact, there isn't room for any spectators at this end.
Sharks' ground in Warrington is part of Rylands Recreation Club, a large site also accommodating bowls and football.
