Because the city of Richmond in British Columbia is located on a river delta, the soil must be compacted before a large structure can be built. The common method is to bring in a big pile of dirt and let it lie there for a period of time. This pile of dirt is compacting the soil in preparation for a condominium complex. Thank you for looking at my vintage compact collection! Compacts became a fashion statement for women in the early 1900s and are still made today.
I started collecting vintage compacts around 10 years ago. A co-worker was cleaning out her mother's house and gave me an old cigarette case that she found. I held onto it for awhile just excited about the unknown history behind it, but when I did a little research, my envy turned more in the direction of the powder and rouge compact.
I have over 100 vintage powder and rouge compacts. I have gotten most of them at yard sales, flea markets, EBay, and some as gifts. My oldest one dates back to 1920. Based on information from a 1999 price guide, most of them value anywhere between $25.00 to as much as $500.00 each. Collecting compacts is a fantastic hobby for me! They do not take up much space, they are easy to display, they are a great conversation piece, and they are very durable and hold up well over time! My 6-year-old thinks they are so neat and I really enjoy sharing them with her. To this day, I always keep an open eye to add to my collection whenever I can. It is something that has become part of me and I love the fact that every compact I own has its own very personal history all hidden inside, something that will remain a mystery forever!

Strobist Info: One Nikon SB24 camera left with a blue gel. Fired at 1/4 power by a Cactus v2s. One Nikon SB600 camera right with a red gel. Also fired at 1/4 power by a Cactus v2s. A 5600k compact fluorescent just out of frame directly above the subject, and gobo'd to keep light from falling on the background.
Another awsome Sport Compact event at WSID.Loads of cars made the trek from all over Aus to compete.Almost capacity entries on the track & a great selection of hot cars on show.
The presentation standard of Sport Compact drag cars has really amazed me so far this year, with a lot of the top runner track cars looking like prestine show cars with candy pearl paint jobs,tastefull air brushing and graffix and tuff drag spec rims all round. these guys have definatly stepped it up a notch!
Took a whole lot of photo's throughout the day, but unfortunatly forgot my memory backup so was limited to 4G worth of space...Ahhhrr.

Abstract digital rendering from original photograph of a collection of golden makeup compacts from various manufacturers and periods. I don't usually post-process images into digital art, but this one just tended to lend itself to the format quite well with exaggerated golden tones and glowing highlights.
Made with "Brushes" on my iPod. I don't know how to draw, but with enough undos, this ended up looking pretty good. Looks like some sort of propaganda poster... but the text was really just added as an after thought to fill the empty space.
