A fine Victorian country house created by one of England's richest commoners, William Gibbs, who built his fortune on fertiliser.

Dave: Alright Eva, let's do a selfie.

Eva: You can do that. I've gotta stare intensely to my left.

Dave: Um, why?

Eva: 'Cuz I'm on a boat! Way too cool to do a selfie. I've gotta look disinterested in the mundane activities of commoners.

Dave: Eva, people on boats do selfies.

Eva: Yeah, but dogs on boats don't. We sniff the wind and live our best lives.

Dave: Alright, you do you. Just stay in the boat.

Eva: I'll try.

Dave: Why only try?

Eva: Because I just smelt some loons out there on the lake. I may need to go full Hasselhoff off the side of the bow.

Dave: Let's keep you in the boat. Repress your inner Hasselhoff.

Eva: If Im not allowed to jump off the bow of the boat after loons then why am I wearing a life jacket.

Dave: Because we don't fully trust you.

Eva: And with good reason. On an unrelated note, can you unclip my lead and turn around to chat with Karen? There are some loons up ahead that need to be taught a lesson.

--------

Eva on the boat. I was honestly trying for a selfie with her, but she is way too cool for that. She's the only one allowed on the boat as Bruno doesn't trust anything that wobbles and Aggie would be likely to poop herself when the boat got moving. Needless to say Eva loves the whole boat experience. She is living her best life.

On this day in 69 CE, the accomplished military commander Vespasian entered Rome to claim the title of Imperator, establishing the Flavian Dynasty and overseeing the largest empire the world had ever seen. At the time, the city of Rome was the preeminent bustling metropolis of the ancient world and was home to more than a million people. It would be nearly a half-century before the Empire reached its greatest territorial extents under Trajan I in 117 CE, spanning the entire Mediterranean from modern-day Iberia to Iraq and Scotland to Egypt.

As decorated as Vespasian became, and as incredibly vast as the empire was for its time, both came from humble beginnings. Vespasian was the first Roman Emperor to ascend from the level of commoner through a series of increasing senatorial ranks coupled masterfully with a distinguished military career. Similarly, Rome was once a lowly tribal settlement atop the Capitoline Hill which, over the centuries, grew to cover seven hills and served as the seat of the Roman Republic, and later the vast Roman Empire.

After being commissioned by the Museu da Imaginação to design and build ‘a large, 1m x 2m historical layout of Ancient Rome’ with little more to go off than said prompt, I immediately dove headfirst into the incredibly vast rabbit hole that is Ancient Roman history. Quite early on, I realized the approach to designing something so mindbogglingly vast in such a relatively small window of time would critically depend on having a strict schedule of target deadlines by which to design compartmentalized stages of the overall layout. After all, considering Vespasian or the Roman Empire at the heights of their power would be such an inconceivable notion without having also studied the respective contexts and timeline of events leading to each of their zeniths.

For this reason, the design of the layout was subdivided into eight regional stages and executed over the course of about five weeks between September and November 2019. Not only did this subdivision ease my sleepless nights of nearly being overwhelmed by the commitment, it was also my crossing-the-Rubicon moment when I truly considered this to be something I could commit to accomplishing within the timeframe, without sacrificing any of my signature design rigor. It has always been a creative dream of mine to design a vast, comprehensive city layout in which individual landmarks can be appreciated as integral parts of a much broader historical and cultural landscape. That is why I am immensely grateful to the Museu da Imaginação for commissioning this piece. Not only has it been an incredibly humbling and educational collaboration for myself, but I can rest more easily knowing our efforts will inspire countless guests and museum patrons for years to come. No time to rest on my laurels though! The question now is, “What comes after the Eternal City?”

Sky burial (Tibetan: བྱ་གཏོར་, w bya gtor), lit. "alms for the birds") is a funerary practice in the Chinese provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia and in Mongolia proper wherein a human corpse is incised in certain locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements (mahabhuta) and animals – especially predatory birds. The locations of preparation and sky burial are understood in the Vajrayana traditions as charnel grounds.

The majority of Tibetans and many Mongolians adhere to Vajrayana Buddhism, which teaches the transmigration of spirits. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it or nature may cause it to decompose. The function of the sky burial is simply to dispose of the remains in as generous a way as possible (the source of the practice's Tibetan name). In much of Tibet and Qinghai, the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and, due to the scarcity of fuel and timber, sky burials were typically more practical than the traditional Buddhist practice of cremation. In the past, cremation was limited to high lamas and some other dignitaries, but modern technology and difficulties with sky burial have led to its increasing use by commoners.

Namsangol Hanok Village (Korean: 남산골한옥마을) is a recreated village of historical Korean buildings in Pil-dong, Jung District, Seoul, South Korea. The village contains several Korean traditional houses called hanok.

The Namsangol Hanok Village offers one the opportunity to experience a wide cross-section of Joseon-era citizenry and activities, from royalty to commoners. A great effort has been made to accurately furnish each dwelling with appropriate era and social status appointments.*

How nice that the companies making them give their iron foundry crews some creative freedom! Also, covers of access holes in streets are ancient devices: "Manhole covers date back at least to the era of ancient Rome, which had sewer grates made from stone." One of those commoners often overlooked but FINALLY with a scientific name that I can remember! With their colonial nature, I always check out their groups hanging out on Red Maple Lake out back. Other visitors float or perch on the bank with them.......Pelicans (Brown and White), herons, gulls and ducks among others. Epping Forest is a 2,400-hectare area of ancient woodland, and other established habitats, between Epping in Essex to the north, and Forest Gate in Greater London to the south, straddling the border between London and Essex. It is a former royal forest, and is owned and managed by the City of London Corporation.

For nearly a thousand years people have been grazing cattle on Epping Forest. It is part of the commoner rights to be able to do so. Currently the only breed of cattle being grazed in the forest are English Long Horn.

Taken in South Derbyshire very near the Leicestershire border in the grounds of a National Trust property.

First visit this winter looking for migrant finches, but didn't see any, lots of the commoner Finches and Tit species with fleeting visits from Nuthatch and Woodpecker.

Clouded Yellow (Colias crocea). The Clouded Yellow is primarily an immigrant to the UK, originating from north Africa and southern Europe, with numbers varying greatly from year to year - an estimated 36,000 butterflies appearing in one of the infrequent "Clouded Yellow" years in 1947. In more recent years, it has been shown that this species has successfully overwintered in the south of England. However, it is believed that the majority of individuals perish, since both larva and pupa of this continuously-brooded species are easily killed by damp and frost. In good years this species can produce up to 3 generations in the UK. In flight, this species is often mistaken for one of the commoner "whites", but the orange-yellow colour is quite distinctive, even in flight, and unlike any other species. The Clouded Yellow has a distribution befitting a highly-migratory species, and can be found anywhere in the British Isles. Many immigrants remain near the coast where they feed, mate, and lay eggs. Others disperse inland and this species is found in both Scotland and Ireland in good years. Photo by Nick Dobbs, Floriana Malta 15-02-23

The Neo-Renaissance House of the Estates (1891) in Helsinki, Finland, originally housed the three commoner estates of the realm, the bourgeoisie, peasants, and clergy. This ended with the reforms of 1906 and parliament had to move to larger quarters.

Ring-necked Pheasants are commonly released by hunters. Males with their gaudy colours are much commoner than the females with their subtle colours.

One of the best visits I have had to this internationally important wildlife reserve. There were probably in excess 1000+ ducks of various species, 1000+ large Gulls probably Steppe majority, 30+ Greater Flamingos, 30+ Glossy Ibis, various Egrets and Herons including Intermediate Egrets. Tern species included River, Gull-Billed, Birds of Prey included Shikra, Sparrowhawk, Great Spotted Eagles, Black Kites, Brahminy Kites, Marsh Harriers and Steppe Eagles. Waders included Black-Winged Stilt, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sanpiper, Common and Green Sandpiper, Red Wattled and White Tailed, Common and Painted Snipe, Dunlin, Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Ruff, Little Ringed and Kentish Plover. Warblers included Lesser Whiethroat, Chiffchaff, Blyth's Reed Warbler, Clamorous Reed Warbler and Paddyfield Warbler. Little Grebe, Black rumped Flameback, Black Drongo, Hoopoe, Indian Roller, Coucal, 3 species of the commoner Kingfisher,s Green Bee-eater, Collared and Laughing Dove. Rails and Crakes included Swamphen, Coot, Moorhen, White-breasted Waterhen and a couple of calling Water Rails. Great and Little Cormorant, Isabelline Shrike, House Crow, indian Robin, Pied Bushchat, Common Starling, Common Myna, Bank Myna, Pale and Plain Martin, Barn Swallow, White-eared and red Vented Bulbul. Prinia's included- Rufous Fronted, Graceful and Plain.

Lake Haleji is an ideal refuge for wintering and home of thousands of birds and regarded as one of the most important wintering areas of migratory waterfowl in Eurasia. It is located at 240 48 N and 600 47'E, and is within easy motoring distance, 88 Km, of Karachi. A sanctuary for birds and an outdoor attraction for humans. Haleji, a salt-water lake was formed by seasonal water, collecting in a depression. For additional water needed for troops stationed at Karachi, during world war II, salt water was drained out and an embankment was constructed around the lake which was fed by fresh water through a canal. Resultantly, Haleji became one of the major sources of water supply to the increasing population of Karachi as well as an exquisite refuge for waterfowl.

Haleji lake and its lagoons together with Hudero lake at a hopping distance, which in turn whispers to the keenjhar lake, forms a very large complex of waterfowl habitat. This complex is now home to divers, dabblers, surface and deep-water feeders and fresh and brackish water lovers. All these find this strange salt and fresh water mix a fascinating place to suit their moods and requirements. It is also ideal for guest birds that come here from colder regions.

Complete circuit of Haleji is about 12 miles. The main water reservoir covers an area of 6.58 Sq. miles and the maximum depth being 17 feet. Shady trees surround it. Phragmites, Typha, Hydrilla and Lotus cover parts of the lake in swaying patches of colours.

The rocky out crops which jut out of the lake at various points are home of a number of migratory and resident waterfowl. One of them is known as Pelican Island and the other as Cormorant Island. On both these islands, hundreds of these birds can be seen resting and enjoying the sun. Evening is the best time for them, for then they all come home. There are marsh crocodiles too.

Haleji is a bird watcher's paradise. As many as 223 bird species have been recorded in the environs of Haleji lake. For instance, osprey, Pallas's fish eagle, Buzzards, Harriers, falcons, Wigeon, coot, shoveller, pintail, Teals, Mallard, heron, Jacana, flamingos and some times Bewick's swan, all form a marvellous sight for a bird watcher.

The Government of Sindh have provided legal cover to preserve ecology of the region and Haleji has been declared a Wildlife Sanctuary and later on as a Ramsar wetland site .

Always there awaiting a photo, this Smooth-billed Ani poses.

Handsome, mostly silvery gray bird of tropical lowland forest and adjacent semi-open areas with taller trees. Usually found at mid-upper levels of fruiting trees, sometimes in small groups that mix readily with the commoner Masked Tityra. Black-crowned is told from slightly larger Masked by its solidly black bill. Male is more silvery overall, with a black cap; female had brown face and smaller black cap. Tityras nest in tree cavities, that they sometimes steal from woodpeckers.

This male bird was photographed in Costa Rica guided by Neotropic Photo Tours.

In the modern world of the super wealthy, those with bottomless bank accounts have come up with some innovative ways to isolate themselves from the commoners. Levitated communities are now the growing fad. They make it much harder for those gate jumpers to get access to the elite's money and riches.

I'm easily impressed. So when I saw this spiral staircase at the exit of the Musei Vaticani (Vatican Museum), I was like, "Holy Mother of Christ... they discovered the genetic code long before the scientists do!"

OK, that might be exaggerating and too dramatic, but in my defense, I just want to entertain the belief that the Vatican has always been possessing higher knowledge that is not privy to commoners... maybe because of my early readings of tons of conspiracy theory books, including the more recent "The Da Vinci Code".

During my quest to photograph White (Grey) Ponies in the Heather, I pulled over into this New Forest Car Park to find this little scene. One donkey had decided to have a little nap in the middle of the car park and the young pony decided to take a closer look.

New Forest Donkeys

There are many different types of livestock put out to pasture in the New Forest including the famous New Forest ponies, donkeys. pigs and cows. Male donkeys (known as a ‘Jack’) and female donkeys (known as a ‘Jenny’) are all owned by the New Forest’s commoners, people who live here and have rights to let their animals graze the open forest - this tradition goes back many hundreds of years.

Social hierarchy must be maintained even in the death; the remains of the nobility are placed in the bone pots on the highest level, commoners on the lowest level.

Continuing with the 6x6 fantasy locations...

Waiting to photograph a rare bird can often lead to opportunities with commoner species as well. This Song Thrush was coming to the same crop of berries as the Barred Warbler though slightly lower down. Because of this the shots are slightly more pleasing.

When I was a lad Song Thrush was almost as common as Blackbird. That is certainly no longer the case and they are not at all common around where I live with only a single pair in the local park

The weather was showery and as I got out of the car a small group of ponies galloped up the hill in front of me.

I climbed to the top of the hill where there was a great view of the forest below and I was fortunate that the sun came out briefly to illuminate this beauty who had obviously been in the undergrowth and picked up an ivy garland.

The New Forest ponies number about 5,000 and they have been in the forest for about 2,000 years.

The cattle and ponies living on the New Forest are not completely feral, but are owned by commoners, who pay an annual fee for each animal turned out. The animals are looked after by their owners and by the Agisters employed by the Verderers of the New Forest. The Verderers are a statutory body with ancient roots, who share management of the forest with the Forestry Commission and National park authority. Approximately 80 per cent of the animals depastured on the New Forest are owned by just 10 per cent of the commoning families.

The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws.

Ponies living full-time on the New Forest are almost all mares, although there are also a few geldings. For much of the year the ponies live in small groups, usually consisting of an older mare, her daughters, and their foals, all keeping to a discrete area of the Forest called a "haunt." Under New Forest regulations, mares and geldings may be of any breed. Although the ponies are predominantly New Foresters, other breeds such as Shetlands and their crossbred descendants may be found in some areas.

Stallions must be registered New Foresters, and are not allowed to run free all year round on the Forest. They normally are turned out only for a limited period in the spring and summer, when they gather several groups of mares and youngstock into larger herds and defend them against other stallions. A small number (usually fewer than 50) are turned out, generally between May and August. This ensures that foals are born neither too early (before the spring grass is coming through), nor too late (as the colder weather is setting in and the grazing and browsing on the Forest is dying back) in the following year.

Drifts to gather the animals are carried out in autumn. Most colts and some fillies are removed, along with any animals considered too "poor" to remain on the Forest over the winter. The remaining fillies are branded with their owner's mark, and many animals are wormed. Many owners choose to remove a number of animals from the Forest for the winter, turning them out again the following spring. Animals surplus to their owner's requirements often are sold at the Beaulieu Road Pony Sales, run by the New Forest Livestock Society.[48] Tail hair of the ponies is trimmed, and cut into a recognisable pattern to show that the pony's grazing fees have been paid for the year. Each Agister has his own "tail-mark", indicating the area of the Forest where the owner lives. The Agisters keep a constant watch over the condition of the Forest-running stock, and an animal may be "ordered off" the Forest at any time. The rest of the year, the lives of the ponies are relatively unhindered unless they need veterinary attention or additional feeding, when they are usually taken off the Forest.

The open nature of the New Forest means that ponies are able to wander onto roads. The ponies actually have right of way over vehicles and many wear reflective collars in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities, but despite this, many ponies, along with commoners' cattle, pigs, and donkeys are killed or injured in road traffic accidents every year. Human interaction with ponies is also a problem; well meaning but misguided visitors to the forest frequently feed them, which can create dietary problems and sickness (e.g. colic) and cause the ponies to adopt an aggressive attitude in order to obtain human food.
