Taken Old Harry, Studland, Dorset. During a pleasant walk along the cliff top from Old Harry towards Ballard Down many meadow butterflies were active in the cliffside fields. A freshly emerged Common Blue caught my eye, beautiful shade of blue on this specimen. The walk was interrupted on many occasions to photograph the numerous butterflies.

While the common toad maybe... well... common, for city slickers that my wife and I are, a move to the Basel countryside this year meant that springtime also meant our first rendezvous with these beautiful amphibians in the natural pool near our house. The neat strings of pearly eggs in the thousands are simply spectacular, especially if you havent seen them before. Look like electron microscopic images of red blood corpuscles. We are also intrigued to see that none of the eagles and hawks that hover over the forests nearby seem to be half-interested in feasting in our ponds... despite a clear French disposition that most of them display otherwise!

BASIC DESCRIPTION
As energetic as their electric zapping call notes would suggest, Common Redpolls are active foragers that travel in busy flocks. Look for them feeding on catkins in birch trees or visiting feeders in winter. These small finches of the arctic tundra and boreal forest migrate erratically, and they occasionally show up in large numbers as far south as the central U.S. During such irruption years, redpolls often congregate at bird feeders (particularly thistle or nyjer seed), allowing delightfully close looks.(allaboutbirds.org)

This large sandpiper can be readily identified by its vivid red legs. It is widespread across temperate Eurasia and winters on coasts around the Mediterranean, on the Atlantic coast of Europe from Great Britain southwards, and in South Asia. This species is accidental in Newfoundland and generates much excitement among birders on the rare occasion of its appearance.
Orcas Island
While hiking on the island, Tom made a move to sit down to rest on a boulder. He was surprised by a sudden hissing sound, and turned to see this common nighthawk mother playing the "broken wing" card to try to distract us from her precious cache of 2 eggs. Would have loved to have stayed and worked on a finer portrait, but we really did not want to distress the poor dear any more than we already had.
Here is a Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) butterfly in the woods today. They can sit quietly for a long time with their wings closed, looking quite plain, and then open their wings in a quick flash! This is the first one I've managed to photograph this year. (San Marcos Pass, 6 June 2022)
