Common Snipe / gallinago gallinago. 21/08/19.
One of c9 Common Snipe that eventually flew in for a prolonged feeding fest mid-afternoon. Once they got going their feeding was frenetic, beaks working like sewing machine needles.
This bird was captured taking a brief rest to check the surrounding area. The position of it's beautifully large, dark eyes gives it excellent periphery vision.

As I told my friend Dick as we walked up on this duck, "This is the closest you will ever be to a Goldeneye in your lifetime!" Usually I see them from across the Columbia River or waaay on the other side of a lake. Not common up close!

Common Toad / bufo bufo. Straws Bridge, Derbyshire. 24/09/21.
So pleased to discover this adult toad clambering around some well rotted wood on a disused railway embankment. It had found a wonderful shaded habitat to forage in, damp and with plenty of cover. I'm sure there would have been no shortage of invertebrates for it to feed on.

Two common mergansers - female waterfowl glide smoothly over a calm lake, creating gentle ripples in the water. The scene is serene with soft reflections of the surrounding light!!!

A Common Carder Bumblebee on the tiny flowers of some chickweed in my gdn earlier this month. obviously desperate for every last bit of nectar

They were still mating on 11 October! I was watching a pair in the hopes of a pic when suddenly the female vanished. I lifted a lily leaf to see if she had drowned and found her wings sticking out of a frog mouth...sadly it was off before I got a photo!

Common Earthball lots of these popping up now, here one day gone the next.

A broad black mask lends a touch of highwayman’s mystique to the male Common Yellowthroat. Look for these furtive, yellow-and-olive warblers skulking through tangled vegetation, often at the edges of marshes and wetlands. Females lack the mask and are much browner, though they usually show a hint of warm yellow at the throat. Yellowthroats are vocal birds, and both their witchety-witchety-witchety songs and distinctive call notes help reveal the presence of this, one of our most numerous warblers. (All about Birds).

Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)
Meaning behind the name:
Falco = Latin for Falcon. This originated from around 300AD and appeared with the art of falconry (training birds of prey) and the name is connected with falx, as "falc-sickle" understood to litterally mean "sickle bearer" - referring to the curved talons on their feet.
tinnunculus = Latin meaning "Shrill sounding" (based on its call)
The English name was also spelt as "Kastrel" (or Castrel) and was in use by 1544. The name originates from French in the form as "cre'cerelle" which gave birth to the earliest form in English as "Casserel" and has a poetic origin from the courtship call that is often heard "Keelie."
