アオスジアゲハとフジバカマ

Common sandpiper taken on our recent weeks trip around the Highlands, with Shaun Knapman.

Taken about 8.30 19/05/2015 just had to put it on. Only wish I'd had a wide angled lens.

call was common growing up in Northern Wisconsin. So when I heard it. I crawled down to the pond to see if I could get a photo. There were 2 of them on the pond. Maybe they will nest on it. I hope so. it is somewhat hard to get to, and not many people know it is there. Besides most people here a scared they may get a tick on them. So they stay away from tall grasses and heavy growth. Just a little macro taken the other day in my garden. I don't think the quality is good enough for macro but I was pleased to have spotted it as even though it is called a common blue butterfly I have never seen one before. So up it goes to flickr as my first common blue as I feel pleased to have snapped it...lol

Common Eider /somateria mollissima. Northumberland. 30/05/23.

'A-HOO, A-HOO, A-HOO ... '

Rear view of a male Common Eider advancing towards a group of females. With head thrown back and beak lifted, he tried to beguile them with a courtship display.

The repeated 'a-hoo, a-hoo, a-hoo' call that male Eiders make is the most wonderful sound imo. Certainly one I could never tire of.

(The rule about not photographing the back of a bird is ignored here! I like the detail of his head pattern, as seen from this PoV)

The Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) is a large sea duck native to northern coasts of Europe, North America, and eastern Siberia. Easily recognized by its size and the male’s bold black-and-white plumage with a green nape, the Common Eider is Iceland’s most abundant sea duck. Males have a sloping forehead and wedge-shaped bill, while females are mottled brown and serve as excellent camouflaged nesters.

'PUDDLE IN A WOODLAND.'

Last week, (before the rains came), there existed just one trackside puddle in Budby South woodland where Common Crossbill were regularly coming to drink. It was an opportunity too good to miss as the site was a 45minute drive from home!

After an hour's wait, I spent an enjoyable afternoon watching and photographing a flock of c15 birds drop down regularly. When not actually drinking, some of the birds chose to perch in young Silver Birch trees behind the puddle, though usually obscured by twigs and leaves.

This image is one of only two unobstructed views I had of a perched bird.

Common Coot / fulica atra. Derbyshire. 09/02/23.

The image was made at a local, disused canal, choked with Reed Mace in this particular section. You can see that the stems made wonderful reflections that afternoon.

This Coot was one of a pair, occupied in searching for food in the tiniest pool of open water. It was kind enough to pose for a few photographs - although it was the reflections that prompted the shots!

An adult Common Loon at the Municipal Botanical Gardens in St. John's Newfoundland

A bird of the cold north with a warm reputation, the Common Eider is famous for the insulating quality of its down (typically harvested from nests without harming the birds). Breeding males are sharp white and black, with pistachio green accents on the neck. Females are barred with warm brown and black. These largest of all Northern Hemisphere sea ducks gather along rocky ocean shores, diving for mussels and other shellfish, which they pry from rocks using long, chisel-like bills. Males court females throughout the year with gentle, crooning calls.

Common Crow (Euploea core) butterfly.

With the arrival of Spring many trees in the nearby forest are in bloom and the butterflies have deserted the bougainvillea flowers in favor of these fresh blossoms. I could see them fluttering around but can't do anything at such a distance. Hence, I have to depend on my archives to bore you once in a while. Here is one.

Have a lovely week ahead, friends.

I wanted to capture Common Mergansers in flight before the sun got too bright. Unfortunately I only ended up with a series with a less than ideal set of backgrounds. I could change the background to something more natural but I do not like to do that, it kind of feels like cheating. I will think on it more.
