'PUDDLE IN A WOODLAND.'

Last week, (before the rains came), there existed just one trackside puddle in Budby South woodland where Common Crossbill were regularly coming to drink. It was an opportunity too good to miss as the site was a 45minute drive from home!

After an hour's wait, I spent an enjoyable afternoon watching and photographing a flock of c15 birds drop down regularly. When not actually drinking, some of the birds chose to perch in young Silver Birch trees behind the puddle, though usually obscured by twigs and leaves.

This image is one of only two unobstructed views I had of a perched bird.

I still found one Common Goldeneye at the bottom of Gladwin in Matsqui Trail Park. It had 5 companions the last time I saw them there.

Common Coot / fulica atra. Derbyshire. 09/02/23.

The image was made at a local, disused canal, choked with Reed Mace in this particular section. You can see that the stems made wonderful reflections that afternoon.

This Coot was one of a pair, occupied in searching for food in the tiniest pool of open water. It was kind enough to pose for a few photographs - although it was the reflections that prompted the shots!

Here are a few Common Goldeneye from Mallard Point the last time I went out.

I haven't been out birding since the self quarantine for Coronavirus has been placed. If the weather gets nice I will out for a walk or drive by myself.

Thanks for your visits and comments! They are all greatly appreciated!

I wanted to capture Common Mergansers in flight before the sun got too bright. Unfortunately I only ended up with a series with a less than ideal set of backgrounds. I could change the background to something more natural but I do not like to do that, it kind of feels like cheating. I will think on it more.

‘EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE, EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE … ‘

One of those moments when you sense you’re being watched!

It came as a very pleasant surprise to find I was being scrutinised by this gorgeous female Bullfinch. She was so close it was impossible to fit her in the frame !

I'm quite fortunate to have these wonderful Common Bronzewings as residents on my property. It can be easy to overlook the species seen regularly, however I never do with these birds as I just love the array of colours they exhibit. From the eye catching rainbow of the iridescent feathers on the wings, to the understated pastel greys, browns & maroons of their plumage. And of course that pale-yellow crown & white stripe of the male!

'CONCENTRATION.'

A splendid king of fishers!

In full hunting mode, he studied the water below for shadows, shapes or movement. On full alert, he showed exemplary concentration ... and had cause to. Nearby his mate tended a new brood ... there were mouths to be fed.

Spur-throated Grasshoppers (part of the Short-horned Grasshopper family) are the most common species of grasshopper in all of North America. It is known mostly for the damage that it inflicts to crops in the Midwest states. The Spur-throated Grasshopper is yellow, orange, or green with additional shades of brown or red. The body may be spectacularly colored in some cases, with bands, spots, or blotches over all of it, and antennae are short.

All comments are appreciated. TIA.

The common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a bird of prey species belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae. It is also known as the European kestrel, Eurasian kestrel, or Old World kestrel. In Britain, where no other kestrel species occurs, it is generally just called "the kestrel".
