The rather utilitarian but imposing moulded concrete rear of the Commodore Cinema, Ryde is seen here on 29th December 2018. Whilst it cannot really be called attractive, it is certainly of it's time and continues to survive.
The actual cinema is still open and is reputed to be one of the cheapest cinemas in the UK.

The Commodore Hotel was built in 1936 in the Streamline Moderne style. The style is evident by the rows of recessed windows with continuous eyebrows on both street facades.
The hotel has a covered porch that wraps around the corner. Also taking advantage of the corner are the stacked curving windows with eyebrows.
The hotel's nautical motifs are quite playful with graduated circular bosses that give the impression of rising bubbles. The nautical theme continues with portholes on the ground level.

This Japanese made 8x40 Commodore is in nice condition, it has an impressive wide angle 472ft@1000yds FOV, but seems not quite as sharp as my other Japanese made 8x40s, in fairness, I think it might be just a fraction out of alignment so may be better when checked and adjusted. I think these were a budget binocular, but its quite heavy and solid, built much like the Swift Saratoga, but not as optically good as that. Now sold.

The Commodore Hotel was built on the site of Llanyravon House, built in 1900; this later became the Stirrup Cup Club, the hotel being built in the late 1970s/early 1980s. The hotel has been in administration and boarded up since the end of 2011, and is earmarked for building land for housing.
Permission has been granted to develop the site for housing.
Pilliner's Bar at the hotel referred to the Pilliner family; when Alfred Massey Pilliner, son of the former managing director of the local Oakfield Wire Works married the daughter of Richard Laybourne, the latter bought Llanyravon Farm for them, and in 1900, had Llanyravon House, a Gothic style mansion built on the Commodore site for the couple.
