Our Vision Zero Commitment

Seattle is committed to the Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030. Our Signs and Markings crew members are working hard installing new speed limit signs that will help us meet this goal. In the last two weeks they've put up signs that will slow traffic in 12 locations around the city. Lower speed limits are strongly correlated with reduced rates of serious injury and death.

This is but one of the actions we're taking to support our Vision Zero goal. In December 2019, Mayor Durkan announced a series of steps that the city is taking to make our streets safer and achieve our Vision Zero goal. These steps include

•reducing speed limits to 25 mph across the city,

•changing traffic signals to let pedestrians walk first,

•adding traffic cameras to school zones and intersections,

•engineering changes to create safer streets,

•creating a new crash review task force, and

•launching additional traffic safety education and enforcement tactics.

We're working aggressively to implement these safety changes and have set an ambitious goal for reducing speed limits throughout the city.

TobaccoDays (TD) is committed to showing you; the pipe-maker, the pipe collector, the pipe hobbyist – the pipe world from a different perspective. Every topic covered on TD aims to make you think different. Aims to make you see different. Anything & everything that we can bundle up together and have the final outcome alter an existing attitude on the subject covered, is considered a wonderful day here at TD.

Today I launch a new series which has the aim to highlight the beautiful & varied texture on our beloved pipes. Yes, we hold our pipes, caress them, enjoy them & smoke them day in and day out. Do we ever miss some of the small details though? Can we look at them any deeper? Of course we can.

To assist that process, I went out and hired a professional photographer (high-speed camera, strobe lights, big set-up & all) and took macro pictures of pipes to focus on their surface, their texture. The next phase of the project required me to find a way to express the beauty of the pipe’s surface. Since I lack any skill in the photo shop arena, I went out and hired a professional graphic designer and together we art-directed the project and took it to it’s final stages. The question of – How do we show the beauty of the pipe’s surface & make sure that we ‘really see it’ was the one thing guiding this project. While the pipe’s surrounding’s are definitely photo-shopped, the actual surface of the pipe remains 100% untouched.

You are looking at a small macro section of a Bulldog pipe designed by Michail Revyagin. The shape has a visual quality that resembles a surf-board. Specifically on the under-side of this pipe. As seen in this image. Using the surf-board concept as inspiration, I asked the talented graphic artist to incorporate a surfer into the piece. Obviously the photographer took the shot from an angle that highlights a strong lip on the pipe. This lip resembles a wave and it is that wave that gives the surfer a somewhat natural home.

Surfing a piece of briar is normal don't you think?

Rik Poot (1924 Vilvoorde - 2006 Jette ) is a strongly socially committed Flemish artist. In the initial period, his work was more abstract. Later on, he used a more figurative art form, within classical modernism. Essential to Rik Poot's formal language are the hollow spaces between the bronze parts from which his sculptures are constructed. By creating these openings, his monumental sculptures simultaneously acquire something light and a certain fragility. This gives his works a powerful and expressive rhythm. He was a great advocate of craftsmanship. He stated: "Without craftsmanship you cannot make art. An artist is a craftsman."

places where many crimes are committed are often proud of the high degree and swiftness of all crimes particularly murder being solved quickly and the suspect apprehended right away.

this happens in the place where i live yet the courts lose evidence everyday ; also the courts are so backlogged that real murderers are set free and nothing at all can be done. it is simple and less paperwork too to convict innocent people. drug evidence as in the actual drugs confiscated are stolen by the laboratories; the police employ informers and the pay is the informer won't be put in prison. informers murder each other but more frequently does a dealer murder the police forced informer. and who cares well i care but what can i do and avoid being murdered myself? you tell me. this type speedy trial with poor or no evidence of course never happens in Lithuania!

Punjab Government is committed to maintain communal harmony while ensuring respect for all religions in the state. It is a matter of great pride and honour for the state government to offer tributes to Lord Valmiki ji by developing a temple-cum-panorama centre at Sri Valmiki Tirath in Amritsar. Significance of this place is huge, as it is believed that Lord Valmiki ji had written Ramayana here.

It commemorates the Hungarian Jewish victims of the killings committed by the Arrow Cross militiamen, the pro-German, anti-Semitic, national socialist party members of Hungary in 1944-1945.

We were doing this with Higher Product Design pupils but a simple exercise like this could be equally successful with S2 pupils.

El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe was established in 1979 by a small number of enthusiastic, talented and committed artists. Since then, El-Funoun has been throned as the lead Palestinian dance company. In Palestine, as well as among Palestinians in exile, El-Funoun has achieved an unprecedented popular recognition; in fact, quite a few of the Troupe’s songs and dances have become household tunes.

Since its inception, El-Funoun has aimed at expressing the spirit of Arab-Palestinian folklore and contemporary culture through unique combinations of traditional and stylized dance and music. The Troupe’s repertoire comprises folkloric dance forms, called “dabke”, in addition to more elaborate choreographed forms that embody El-Funoun’s own unique vision of Palestinian dance.

El-Funoun is widely recognized as the cultural entity that has played the most significant role in reviving and reinvigorating Palestinian dance and music folklore. This accomplishment is particularly important, since it effectively countered the systematic attempts by the Israeli occupation to suppress the Palestinian national identity through banning or expropriating any forms of Palestinian cultural expression.

El-Funoun is composed of seventy-five dancers, singers, musicians and support personnel. It is an independent, non-profit organization that is virtually entirely volunteer-based. The members are therefore motivated by the vision of the Troupe more than by any other factor. This not only keeps the Troupe’s administrative cost quite low, but also ensures a strong sense of belonging to and ownership of the group. This resolve, coupled with a driving commitment to artistic excellence and an authentic Palestinian vision have all afforded El-Funoun its current leadership status.

In Palestine, the Troupe holds an impressive track record of over one thousand performances since 1979, including its very well attended performances in Palestine International Festivals of 1992 through 1999. Moreover, El-Funoun has participated in the following:

US Tour (15 cities) in 1986

US Tour (20 cities) in 1991

Jerash International Festival, Jordan in 1994

Jerusalem Festival, United Arab Emirates in 1995

Raatvick International Folklore Festival, Sweden in 1996

Vienna, Austria 2007

Berlin, Germany 2008

Vlaardingen, Holland 2008

Syria, Damascus 2008

The 15th Al Qurain Cultural Festival, Kuwait 2008

El-Funoun played a key role in establishing the Popular Art Centre, a community organization committed to raising awareness about the arts, and opening opportunities for community members to participate in artistic activity and expression. The Centre offers classes in traditional dance, ballet, jazz, music, puppets and drama, in addition to a host of other programs. Through the Centre, El-Funoun’s message has propagated to many schools, organizations and localities.

El-Funoun has won several commendation certificates and awards, most prominent among which is the Palestine Award for Popular Folklore 1997, the highest honour award given in this field by the Palestinian Authority. In addition, El-Funoun's dance film "Emotional Rescue" directed by the German Director Helena Waldmann, won a special prize as part of Al-Jazeera film festival 2006.

El-Funoun believes in building cultural bridges with the world, both to have a healthy exchange of experience, ideas and techniques and to present the long-suppressed Palestinian culture before other nations.

The BLM, along with the Deerwood Ranch Wild Horse Public Off-Range Pasture and the Mantle Ranch and Wild Horse Training Facility, were pleased to adopt 11 wild horses and two burros during an adoption and free Open Ranch Days Sept. 27 - 28. The BLM is committed to managing healthy wild horses on sustainable rangelands by placing excess wild horses and burros into caring homes.

During the event, the BLM offered four halter-started yearling horses for adoption, which the Mantle family trained at their facility in Wheatland. The Mantles have over 26 years of professional experience gentling horses. Silent competitive bidding for the trained horses took place both days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and started at $125. At the end of each day, the horses that received bids we're taken home by the highest qualifying bidders.

The BLM also offered 11 untrained horses, ranging from yearling to 3 years in age. The untrained horses were adopted on a first-come, first-served basis for a $25 fee. The BLM launched a new wild horse adoption incentive program in March, making qualified adopters eligible to receive $500 within 60 days of the adoption date and an additional $500 within 60 days of titling for each animal. Titling normally occurs one year from the adoption date. The incentive was available for the untrained horses at this adoption.

The Deerwood Ranch is located approximately 31 miles west of Laramie, near the Medicine Bow National Forest and Little Laramie River. It was the first BLM-sponsored wild horse Public Off-Range Pasture, and is currently the permanent home to about 350 wild horses. Wild horses at the ranch enjoy a natural and free roaming environment.

“The Deerwood Ranch is a prime example of how our off-range pasture program can benefit both wild horses and local communities,” said Monica Mohr, BLM Wild Horse and Burro Specialist. “The September adoption not only gave visitors the chance to bring home a Mantle-started horse. It was also an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the wild horse and burro program and experiencing a piece of our shared American heritage.”

Nicki Creasey, BLM Training Incentive Program Trainer, was also present to answer questions and provide training demonstrations with one of her gentled burros.

The Deerwood Ranch hosted Open Ranch Days during the adoption, offering tractor rides to view the wild horses residing at their property every half hour form 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Gift items were available at their visitor center, and lunch was available for purchase both days from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The Deerwood Ranch is located at 599 State Hwy 11, Laramie, WY 82070. For more information about the ranch, visit www.deerwoodranchwildhorseecosanctuary.com. I rejoined Weight Watchers (WW) this morning and am encouraged about starting this up again. I have fallen off the wagon a few times but I am a point where I am ready to make this happen. (Plus I have friends and family who are also participating which makes it easier).

I wanted to take a moderately full length picture to capture this moment. I am sure you will not be able to see the weight loss from day to day, but having the archive of 365 while I work on my weight loss journey will be great to reflect upon.

I can only hide behind head shots and strategic cropping for so long.....so here goes nothing! :)

brooklynmuseum: Here at the Brooklyn Museum we are committed to addressing the most pressing current social and cultural issues not only in our canon-expanding exhibitions, but also in our new acquisitions for our renowned collection. So we are thrilled to announce that we recently acquired Shifting the Gaze by Titus Kaphar (b. 1976), who is one of the most significant contemporary artists to engage with issues of social justice today. Kaphar completed Shifting the Gaze on stage as a dramatic conclusion to his recent TED talk, “Can Art Amend History?,” that explored how the encoded language of art conveys the power and privilege of its subjects. The painting is based on the Family Group in Landscape by 17th-century Dutch painter Frans Hals, and depicts a Caucasian couple, their two children, and an African servant, posed against a landscape. During his talk Kaphar veiled the figures of the couple and children with broad strokes of white paint—and shifts our gaze over to the servant. Shifting the Gaze will inaugurate our new exhibition series, One Brooklyn, scheduled to begin in the summer of 2018, that will feature one work from our collection that forges an inspiring encounter and expands the ways we see ourselves, the world and its possibilities.

*If you remember me, then I don’t care if everyone else forgets*

Happy birthday to you, my hanoi.

From the Murder of Halit Yozgat

Kassel, Germany, 6 April 2006

On 6 April 2006, 21-year-old Halit Yozgat was murdered in his family run internet café in Kassel, Germany. His was the ninth of ten racist murders committed in Germany between 2000 and 2007 by a neo-Nazi group known as the National Socialist Underground (NSU). At the time of the killing Andreas Temme, an agent of the German domestic intelligence service (Verfassungsschutz), was present in the café. Temme claimed not to have witnessed the murder.

Within the 77 square metres of the internet café, and the 9 minutes 26 seconds during which the incident unfolded, different actors – members of migrant communities, a state employee and the murderers – were positioned in relation to each other in a manner yet to be made clear, but one whose implications bear great political significance. This unit of space and time stands as a microcosm of the social and political controversy known as the ‘NSU Complex’.

Commissioned by Unraveling the NSU Complex, a Germany-wide alliance of anti-racism activists, Forensic Architecture’s investigation became possible when hundreds of documents from the Hessen police investigation of the murder – reports, witness depositions, photographs, and computer and phone logs – were leaked at the end of 2015.

One of the most important pieces of evidence in this leak was a video of a police re-enactment performed by Andreas Temme. Such re-enactments are often ritualistic events forming part of an admission or confession, denoting justice fulfilled. In Forensic Architecture’s investigation the re-enactment is treated not only as a representation of an event, but an event in itself; a potential crime – of perjury and misrepresentation – in its own right.

Within a reconstructed real-scale physical model of the internet café – the exact dimensions of which are marked here on a black carpet – Forensic Architecture re-enacted this re-enactment in order to examine Temme’s testimony, while also carrying out further tests to analyse the threshold of sensory perception. A video presented here shows moments from this process of re-enactment.

The video triptych 77sqm_9:26min presents Forensic Architecture’s full analysis of the events surrounding Halit Yozgat’s murder. This investigation established that Temme’s testimony was untruthful, opening up to larger questions regarding the involvement of German state agencies with radical right-wing groups. As the NSU trial approaches its conclusion in 2018, the truth of the murder – and above all, Temme’s presence at the scene – remains obscured.

The mural presented here charts the events related to the production, presentation and subsequent contestation of Forensic Architecture’s analysis across multiple forums: press conferences, cultural institutions, public demonstrations, two parliamentary inquiries and a criminal court. In each of these forums, Forensic Architecture was obliged to defend its evidence according to different rules and conventions. The complexity of this flow diagram traces the indeterminate nature of counter forensics, its methods, limitations and points of impact.

Part of Counter Investigations by Forensic Architecture (March-May 2018).

Forensic Architecture is both the name of the agency established in 2010, and a form of investigative practice into state violence and human rights violations that traverses architectural, journalistic and legal fields, and shifts between critical reflections and tactical interventions.

Counter Investigations presents a selection of recent investigations undertaken by the agency into incidents occurring in different contexts worldwide. In parallel, the exhibition outlines five key concepts that raise related historical, theoretical and technological questions. Continuing to be explored in an accompanying series of public seminars, these investigations and propositions add up to a Short Course in Forensic Architecture.

Grounded in the use of architecture as an analytic device, Forensic Architecture has in recent years developed a host of new evidentiary methods that respond to our changing media landscape – exemplified in the widespread availability of digital recording equipment, satellite imaging and platforms for data sharing – and propose new modes of open-source, citizen-led evidence gathering and activism.

Forensic Architecture has worked closely with communities affected by acts of social and political violence, alongside NGOs, human rights groups, activists, and media organisations. Their investigations have provided decisive evidence in a number of legal cases, and contested accounts given by state authorities, leading to military, parliamentary and UN inquiries.

Counter Investigations marks the beginning of a long term collaboration between the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Forensic Architecture. The exhibition and this ongoing partnership exemplifies the Institute of Contemporary Arts’ intent to foster and explore new modes of civil practice operating across the fields of art, architecture and activism.
