The statue that adorns the front roof of Grand Central Terminal and faces south is 48 feet high and weighs in at 1500 tons. On the left sits Hercules, representing physical strength; on the right is Minerva, goddess of wisdom and protector of cities; featured at the center is Mercury, god of travel and commerce.

This sculptural grouping was considered the largest of its kind when it was built in 1914. Perhaps even more impressive than the statue is that clock. At 13 feet in diameter the clock still is the largest example of Tiffany glass in the world. During the 100th anniversary, in Inaccessible New York: Behind The Scenes At Grand Central Terminal, WCBS offered a backstage tour that seems “like something out of the movie ‘Hugo.’”

“Transportation” or alternatively “The Glory of Commerce” is said to represent the wisdom, speed and strength of Grand Central and the midtown neighborhood. Apparently the French sculptor who designed the work was not very impressed by this wisdom, speed and strength of the neighborhood. French artist Jules-Alexis Coutan refused to come to the United States to oversee the construction of his project. When asked why, his reply was “I fear some of your [American] architecture would distress me.”

So the sculpture was constructed locally under long distance supervision. William Bradley and Son of Long Island City, Queens took seven years to construct Coutan’s massive sculpture of the Greek Gods out of the same Bedford limestone as the façade of Grand Central Terminal.

My last one from the latest project that I'm shooting for. The reason I had to reshoot this was for personal reason. I just didn't like the people that showed up on the bridge to be in the picture. TO me it just kind of throws it off and causes distraction. So I went back a few days later after taking this shot and patiently waited for 30 minutes for everybody to be clear of the shot than fired off my 10 exposures as fast as I could.

Suwanee Historic District

Suwanee, Georgia

Listed 12/24/2013

Reference Number: 13000966

The Suwanee Historic District is significant at the local level under Criterion A in the areas of commerce and community planning and development. and under Criterion C in the area of architecture. Suwanee was founded with the arrival of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway in 1871 and it prospered as the center of commerce for the surrounding agricultural-based economy in northwest Gwinnett County between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. The district is significant in architecture for its small representative collection of commercial buildings commonly found in Georgia towns, but more importantly for its good examples of several residential types and styles popular between the 1870s and early 1960s. House types represented include the shotgun house, central hallway, New South cottage, gabled wing cottage, Queen Anne cottage, pyramid cottage, Georgian cottage, American Small House, ranch house, and 1-house, as defined in Georgia's Living Places: Historic Houses in Their Landscaped Settings. Stylistic influences include Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, and Colonial Revival. The district is also significant in commerce because its central business district was a primary location for the buying and selling of goods and services for the northwest portion of Gwinnett County. The district is significant in community planning and development because its plan is a good example of a railroad strip-type town, as defined in Georgia Community Development and Morphology of Community Types (Roth, 1989), a statewide context. The primary orientation of the town is toward the railroad, which influenced subsequent street patterns and business locations.

Always a favourite stop of mine during Doors Open Toronto this stunning lobby is only the base of the iceberg that is Commerce Court North. Once the tallest building in the British Empire the art-deco skyscraper is another one of those gems now hidden by towers of steel and glass, but remains a functional bank.
