Ottawa Parliament Buildings - 20101028-08

Parliament Hill is a nine-hectare (0.09 km2) site in downtown Ottawa. It is home to Canada’s Parliament Buildings, the seat of the country’s federal government. Parliament Hill’s open grounds — a rarity among national parliaments — provide a place to gather for celebration or protest and are a National Historic Site. An excellent example of the gothic revival architecture style, the Parliament Buildings — Parliament (Centre Block) and two office buildings (East and West blocks) — officially opened on 6 June 1866. The Library of Parliament is the only part of the original Centre Block to have survived a fire in 1916. A Memorial Chamber and Peace Tower were added to the rebuilt Centre Block in honour of fallen First World War soldiers. I took this photo shortly after acquiring my first DSLR. I had fumbled my way through using it in Ecuador, basically as an expensive point and shoot, so decided to take a basic photography course at our local college to learn more. One assignment was to visit Parliament Hill and take photos both inside and outside of this important location.

Buff-banded Rail

Scientific Name: Gallirallus philippensis

Description: The Buff-banded Rail is a medium-sized stout rail with short legs. It has a distinctive grey eyebrow and an orange-brown band on its streaked breast. The lores, cheek and hindneck are rich chestnut. The chin and throat are grey, the upperparts streaked brown and the underparts barred black and white. The eye is red. Young birds are much paler to white underneath, with indistinct bars and only a faint orange-brown tint on the breast. Downy chicks are fluffy black. This rail walks slowly, with tail raised and flicking constantly.

Similar species: The orange-brown breast band distinguishes the Buff-banded Rail from the similar but smaller Lewin's Rail,Dryolimnas pectoralis, which has a rich chestnut crown and nape and a proportionally longer pink bill.

Distribution: The Buff-banded Rail is widespread in mainland Australia, particularly along the eastern coast and islands, and on Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. It is also found in south-east Asia, New Guinea and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Buff-banded Rail is seen singly or in pairs in dense reeds and vegetation bordering many types of wetlands or crops. It makes widespread use of artificial wetlands like sewage ponds and drainage channels.

Seasonal movements: The Buff-banded Rail is resident and possibly locally nomadic, though little is known of these movements.

Feeding: The Buff-banded Rail feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, insects, seeds, fruit, frogs, carrion and refuse. It mostly feeds early in the morning and the evening.

Breeding: Breeding is poorly known, but the Buff-breasted Rail nests in long grass, tussocks, rushes or crops. It makes an unlined cup-shaped nest of grasses or reeds. Both parents incubate and the young will leave the nest within 24 hours. Both parents remain with the young, which usually feed themselves, though the female may feed them as well. Two broods may be raised in some seasons.

Calls: Loud creaky squeak when breeding but usually silent.

Minimum Size: 28cm

Maximum Size: 33cm

Average size: 31cm

Average weight: 130g

Breeding season: September to February

Clutch Size: 5 to 8 eggs

Incubation: 19 days

Nestling Period: 1 days

◼ I know it's been a while since I've uploaded a photo. I know this isn't THAT great of a photo either. However, I felt the need to upload something.. And I figured I'd upload this since I took this photo the other day (to send to my sister in law, in reguards to a this plant in my back yard).

◼ I have been pretty busy guys. Between work, my family life, private photography jobs & just trying to relax a little somewhere in between! ~ Which is why I've been kind of absent! Just busy! But no worries, I'm fine! :) I'll be updating soon.. Hopefully! I have to get a photo for my 52week "Anything Avian". Oh that will be fun.. lol

>> I also have to do my 52Frames at some point this week.. *TRANSPORTATION.. is the subject.. & Extra Credit would be "panning". We'll see how that works out!

Late fall when most of the snow pack has melted leaving Mt. Hood pretty much bare bones..no white coat until it snowed 24" that night The wondrous part is the evergreen forest stays green all year.

A large stork with a long yellow bill that curves down at the tip, like that of an Ibis. Adult is primarily white with black striped markings on the wings and bright pink on tertials. Also note the bright orange face, pinkish legs, and speckled band across the chest. Immatures are duller, with a brown wash, and lack the chest band. These storks typically fly with their head and neck drooping almost at or below the belly level. Often seen near water bodies such as wetlands, marshes, and flooded agricultural fields. Breeds in crowded colonies, often with other waterbirds. (eBird)

We saw a lot of these lovely storks on our first birding day in Thailand. They were busy fishing in the salt pans around the Gulf of Thailand. After that, we saw Asian Openbill storks instead.
