I’ve just read a comment from a photographer who said it’s time to stop shooting in black and white. He claimed we don’t see the world in black and white and it was something only done in the past due to the limitations at the time and it’s time to move on. Here’s a number of reasons why I think it’s critical to shoot black and white from time to time, and how it can help nurture your photographic eye.

Ansel Adams, Cartier Bresson, David Bailey, Karsh, Sebastio Salgado, Albert Watson, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, Daidō Moriyama, Sally Mann, Avedon – the list of master photographers, alive or dead, who saw black and white not simply as a technical limitation but as a creative choice, could be an entire article in itself. But why did they choose it?

Here are some key reasons:

1. Color No Longer Distracts

2. You’ll See Light Differently

3. It Helps Emphasize Emotion

4. The Timeless / Classic Quality From Black And White

5. It Amplifies How You Use Negative Space

6. It Highlights Shape, Form and Pattern In The Image

7. To Highlight Beauty and Skin Tones

8. It Helps Focus On Composition

So What About Color?

The argument of not shooting black and white because it’s a thing of the past is a little odd to me, especially given that color photography is not necessarily a modern invention. Kodachrome for 35mm cameras has been around since the 1930s. The far more interesting (and possibly meaningful question) may be:“Why is black and white still so prevalent today, given we've been able to shoot color for so long?”.

I still shoot color and love playing with it, but I certainly enjoy the challenge and creative push from shooting in black and white.

Small brownish wren, usually rather plain overall, with dark barring on the wings and tail. Lacks white eyebrow. Occurs in a variety of open or semiopen habitats, including suburbs, parks, rural farmland, and woodland edge with thick tangles. Larger, longer tailed, and generally slightly paler than Winter and Pacific Wrens. Often perches conspicuously when singing, but otherwise fairly secretive. Listen for bubbly song of chatters and trills, and harsh scolding calls. (eBird)

One of my favourite birds! For such a small bird they are both incredibly vocal and very fierce. This one was singing up a literal wind storm but didn't seem the least fussed about the wind mussing his feathers.

Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake is near the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.

The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft).

During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake from a nearby glacier, and these suspended rock particles are what give the lake a bright, turquoise colour.

The lake is fed by Peyto Creek, which drains water from Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield). Peyto Lake is the origin of the Mistaya River, which heads northwest from the lake's outflow. (Wikipedia)

Another image from our 2008 Road Trip from Ottawa to eastern British Columbia. This is one of the most iconic lakes in Banff National Park, so of course, we had to stop to see it as we made our way from Banff to Jasper. It was an overcast day, but with just enough light filtering through to give a hint of colour to this magnificent view.

Small, brightly-colored leaf warbler. Yellowish green above and pale below, with bright yellow brow stripes, a pale crown stripe, and a bicolored bill (dark above, orange below). Has two wingbars, of which upper can be quite pale or absent. Note white undertail and distinct behavior of flicking both wings at the same time (Blyth’s, Claudia’s, and Hartert’s leaf warblers flick their wings alternatingly). More extensively yellow and with a stronger, more contrasting head pattern than Blyth’s and Emei leaf warblers, and lacks the bright rump patch of “Pallas’s-type” leaf warblers. Closely related Kloss’s Leaf Warbler is extremely similar; look for Davison’s brighter and more extensively white undertail coverts. Breeds in deciduous broadleaved and mixed hill and montane forest; descends into forested foothills in the non-breeding season. Song is short and sweet: “wih-chew-chee wih-chew-chee-wih”. Calls are high and liquid-sounding: “chew-wee” or “wit-chew-wee”. (eBird)

We saw these little warblers quite frequently, flitting rapidly through the trees. This one was chasing insects in the more inaccessible sections of the trees, but came out to give us a quick once-over before resuming the hunt.

Thanks to Daren who alerted me to the fact that I had mis-ID'd this warbler. I used Merlin Photo ID and compared my other photos with those from eBird to realize that this was not a Hume's Warbler, but a Davison's Leaf Warbler.

I did have a steam and fence shot, but I've left that at home, this one is a reminder of the snow just before Christmas so festive and now just a distant memory it would seem.

This shot was originally uploaded 9 years ago and captured back in 1976 when I made a day trip down to Reading chasing the fast-disappearing class 52 Westerns. Less than 2 months later they would all be gone and the diesel-hydraulic era, heralded as the modern replacement for steam on the Western Region, would come to an end little more than 11 years after the last steam locomotives ran on these metals.

Thankfully I had film to spare that day and, in frosty and foggy conditions, I captured this image of a 3H class 205 DEMU no. 1130 as it approached one of the bay platforms out of the gloom with a service from Basingstoke. The headcode 66 was correct for this service. No rework was required on this occasion, but I did delete the original upload.

Large, black, crow-sized bird with decurved bill and deep red eye. In flight, white in primaries very evident. Struts around in family groups on the ground in open woodland areas around southeastern and eastern Australia. A variety of calls includes a plaintive, descending whistle. (eBird)

Although totally unrelated to crows, these choughs are just as shy. Everytime we came across a group, they would take off, much like this one is doing. Big, noisy and beautiful, they were fun to watch.

The White-winged Chough is one of only two species in their family. The other is the Apostlebird which looks very different to this bird. They are not related to the Choughs of the northern hemisphere.

The first time I posted a picture of this plant, someone from Rio Grande do Sul made a very interesting comment. He said that when Maricá blooms in late Summer is a sign of a harsh Winter.

The plant is quite abundant in Rio Grande do Sul, and long ago people have observed this connection between the late flowering of Maricá, and the characteristics of a stricter Winter.

Can it be true?

I photographed the plant in Minas, abundantly flowery in March. Winter has not yet started officially but in my hometown many are complaining of much lower than usual temperatures for Autumn. Let's see now how Winter will be ...

Scientific Name: The tree belongs to the Mimosaceae family, species Mimosa Bimucronata, "Maricá" in our idiom.

Features: Tree or shrub that can reach up to 15 m high and 40 cm in diameter in adulthood. It is a pioneer plant, aggressive, used in soil improvement, important in native essence reforestation for the recovery of degraded areas. It is not a long -lived plant (20 to 30 years).

Very flowering and ornamental, with scented flowers in a pompom shape, which attracts the bees. The fruits are quite showy and with red color.

Places of Occurrence: Occurs naturally in the states of Bahia, Alagoas, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

It is adapted to soils poorly drained with sandy texture, but develops in stony soils, rock outcrops and wet slopes. It also develops well in fertile soils with adequate physical properties. The seedlings should be planted in full sun.

Wood is used in carpentry and as a source of energy (firewood and coal). The plant still has a high cellulose content, and is used in folk medicine. It is being widely used as a living fence in southern Brazil.
