The unique comical face of this bird have made it the stuff of literary legends. This free-flight exhibition at the Museum provided the best photo ops for this bird and several other raptor species that I have ever experienced. They land on props really close to the viewing audience and otherwise engage in truly natural behavior.

Torture Tues: You know how I can't stop laughing when someone gets hurt in a comical way??? Well, I'm STILL chuckling as I replay Nica P's AWESOME tumble today HAHAHAHHA... Hairy Hannah came ripping down the hilly trail to greet Nica P and when she got to Nica P, her leash got tangled in Nica P's leg and Nica P went airborne!! I am sooooooooooooo bummed I didn't get that one on video!!! But you know??? Because Nica P is so fit and strong, she just got right up and we all had a good laugh!!! If she weren't in shape, she would have been laying on the dirt for a very long time hahhahahaha!!! And come to think of it, Aloha G took a tumble tripping over Ellie-G yesterday ... not to mention my epic face plant into the cement when I tripped over the uneven surface of the sidewalk as I was racing Wailee in the dark...if we weren't in shape, it would have not been so funny!! Another reminder of the great benefits of staying healthy!!!

Another thing I missed on video....Wailee chasing geese/ducks towards the pond...we thought she was going to stop at the shore but my coyote jumped into the water and then had a look on her face like, "Uh ohhhh...." hahahha....after a moment of thought, she put those kangaroo legs into action and sprung up and BOUNCED/Hopped/Pranced back to shore!! I'm pretty sure the geese/ducks were laughing thinking, "You got your bachi!!"

Anyways, it was another awesome Torture Tues...After our 1 Mile XC Warm-Up, we did Arms/Legs/Cardio then Abs/Paddles.

After class, the Spam-Dogs had some off-leash fun. Ellie-G wore Wailee out with her wrestling game!!! I've never seen Wailee to tired hahahhah!!! After her bath to get the pond water off hahaha, she jumped on the couch and conked out!! HAHAH!!

Great stuff Windy M, Skinny S, Half T, Terminator, Killer A, Aloha G, Ab Queen, Nica P, Ripped L, Cat W and all the Spam-Dogs!!

It was pretty comical the first time that I tried to shoot this bridge that crosses Hwy 280 in Cupertino, CA, with my buddy Paul. I had just finished polishing off a couple of tacos when I turned away from the truck in the parking to start walking up the hill to the bridge. As I looked up at the blowing bridge up on the hill, the lights all went dark. Oh well, 10pm - lights out!

I made sure that I made it back there just a bit earlier the next time that I wanted to shoot it.

Image Info: I shot a 3 image bracket intending to put together a tonemapped HDR for this image but instead blended the exposures using the exposure fusing function in Photomatix. I hand blended some other bits to clean things up and made final adjustments in LR3. This image scored an 84 in a print competition at my local PPA affiliate, PPGBA.

Visit anvilimage.com/2011/03/26/ppgba-print-competition-update/ to see the other image that I also entered the same night that scored higher... :)

Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio presents "The Roar of the Greasepaint — The Smell of the Crowd" -- on stage from Sept. 4 to 21, 2014.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Rupert, "The Roar of the Greasepaint — The Smell of the Crowd" is a comical, allegorical satire on the British class system of the 1960s.

Through a series of sketches and songs served up in a style reminiscent of vaudeville, we meet the show’s two central characters: the pompous Sir (who represents “the Establishment”) and the downtrodden Cocky (who stands in for “the little guy”). Sir and Cocky meet to play “The Game,” which symbolizes the eternal struggle between “The Haves” and “The Have Nots.”

Because Sir changes and manipulates the rules of The Game, Cocky always ends up with the short end of the stick. Sir’s disciple and sidekick, known as The Kid, is eager to learn from his master while keeping an eye on the upstart Cocky, who desperately wants to beat Sir at The Game. As the mighty battle wages between Sir and Cocky, a group of young children known as the Urchins comments through song and dance (as a sort of Greek chorus).

Ultimately, Sir and Cocky are forced to realize that their interdependence is more complicated and thorny — and perhaps more potentially variable — than either “Have” or “Have Not” originally thought. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, many of the songs from "The Roar of the Greasepaint — The Smell of the Crowd" have become musical standards: “Who Can I Turn To?,” “The Joker,” “The Beautiful Land,” “A Wonderful Day Like Today” and “Feeling Good” (which was a hit song for both Nina Simone and Michael Bublé).

Clowns are comical performers, stereotypically characterized by their grotesque appearances: colored wigs, stylistic makeup, outlandish costumes, unusually large footwear, red-nose, etc., who entertain spectators by acting in a hilarious fashion. The types of their acts varies greatly. Although some find clowns to be scary, their intended purpose is to entertain people, especially young children. Peter Berger writes that "It seems plausible that folly and fools, like religion and magic, meet some deeply rooted needs in human society."For this reason, clowning is often considered an important part of training as a physical performance discipline, partly because tricky subject matter can be dealt with, but also because it requires a high level of risk and play in the performer.

Freddie Garrity (14 November 1936 – 19 May 2006)[1] was a singer and actor who was frontman and comical element in the 1960s pop band, Freddie and the Dreamers.

Born in Manchester, Freddie worked as a milkman while playing in local skiffle groups: the Red Sox, the John Norman Four, and finally the Kingfishers, who became Freddie and the Dreamers in 1959. In the early years of the band, Garrity’s official birth-date was given as 14 November 1940 to make him appear younger and, therefore, more appealing to the youth market who bought the majority of records sold in the UK.

Garrity’s trademark was his habit of leaping up and down during performances. This, combined with his almost skeletal appearance and horn-rimmed glasses, made him an eccentric figure in the UK pop scene of the early 1960s.

Freddie and the Dreamers disbanded in the late 1960s and between 1971 and 1973 Garrity and former bandmate Peter Birrell appeared in the ITV children’s television show Little Big Time. Garrity also made an appearance on the Granada Television production The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club in early 1974; and he appeared in an episode of Heartbeat as a DJ, who played a Freddie and the Dreamers record, "I'm Telling You Now".

After his television career ended, Garrity formed a new version of Freddie and the Dreamers and toured regularly for the next two decades, but no further records or chart success came their way. He continued to perform until 2001, when he was diagnosed with emphysema after collapsing during a flight, thus forcing him into retirement.

With his health in decline, Garrity settled in Newcastle-under-Lyme. He was married three times and had one child from his first marriage, Jackie, and three from his second marriage, Nicola, Danielle, and Matthew. Freddie Garrity died at Bangor in North Wales, at the age of 69, after being taken ill while on holiday. (Wikipedia)

Yet another project I would like to begin, this one comically ambitious. In the Qingling mountains there is a tradition of hermitism dating back to the Qin Dynasty, when scholars would flee to the mountains from nearby Changan to hide from the Emperor's wrath. Recently I have discovered it may be possible to find some of the modern day versions of these self-exiled recluses and potentially photograph them.

This man isnt anything like an extreme hermit, just a monk that lives on the mountain overlooking the town of Zhenan, not too far below. He is able to go down to buy fruit and supplies whenever he likes.

This is a test shot to see how well a project would work that emphasised the surroundings and attempted to protect the isolation hermits ultimately seek. I think to do the whole thing properly I will need to go large format though, to properly showcase the scale. Will do more research into feasability.

This is feeling a little topical, with people's lockdown frustrations being taken out on attacking over-zealous actions by some police forces in trying to regulate social distancing in parks.

This comical painting by Lawson Wood belongs to the era of 100 years ago.

There is quite an extensive biography on this site:

www.bpib.com/illustra2/lwood.htm

Painter, illustrator and designer: Lawson Wood was born on 23 August 1878 in Highgate, London to a family in which watercolour painting had been a tradition for two generations. He was the grandson of the architectural artist L.J. Wood RI and eldest son of the landscape painter Pinhorn Wood. He studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art, Heatherley's School of Fine Art and attended classes at Frank Calderon's School of Animal Painting. His humorous, beautifully coloured work is technically superb and is still enormously collectable today.

In 1896 at the age of eighteen he joined the staff of periodical publisher C. Arthur Pearson Ltd. He worked there for six years and it was there that he met his future wife, Charlotte Forge whom he married in 1902. At the age of 24 he pursued a freelance career, which would prove to be extraordinarily successful. He was published in some of the most prestigous magazines of the day. These would eventually include The Graphic, The Strand Magazine, Punch, The Illustrated London News and Boys Own Paper. He also illustrated a number of books, including The Invaders by Louis Tracy in 1901 for Pearson.

An active member of the London Sketch Club, Lawson Wood was a close friend of one of its most famous and well-loved members, Tom Browne. Lawson Wood was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and showed prolifically with Walker's Galleries and Brook Street Art Gallery and also at the Royal Academy.

During the First World War, Lawson Wood served as an officer in the Kite Balloon Wing of the Royal Flying Corps engaged in one of the war's most dangerous tasks—plane spotting from a balloon. He continued to draw during the war and the French decorated him for his action over Vimy Ridge.

Once peace returned, Lawson Wood's love of animals came to the fore in his work. To ensure accuracy of detail, Lawson Wood regularly visited London Zoo and a small menagerie in Eastbourne, The Wannock Tea Garden. Inter-Art and Valentine published many of his designs. He also set up a factory producing "The Lawson Woodies" simple wooden toys of animals, birds and humans to his own designs. In 1934 he was awarded a fellowship of the Royal Zoological Society for his active work with animals and their welfare. He set up his own animal sanctuary for aged creatures.

Lawson Wood gained immense popularity with his humorous drawings of comic policemen, dinosaurs, prehistoric and Stone Age characters, and apes and monkeys often seen performing absurd antics against immaculate, dead-pan backgrounds.
