Tatjana Meissner – Indiscret

Here is an HDR of the Comedy Club building where I work in the warehouse district of Minneapolis.

Prepare for an HDR flood. I've got 21 more waiting to be processed that I took today... Of course it takes at least half hour just to process one HDR so it won't exactly be a "flood" ;-)

Tango

Director: Jerzy Jarocki

After the Polish premiere of Tango in 1964, the play was predicted “to be played eternally” in the Polish theatre: played regularly like the bugle call from St Mary’s Tower in Kraków. One of those who assisted in the delivery of the fantastic drama, Jerzy Jarocki, returns to it 55 years later. He supplements the Mrożkian tale of “the family that turns into the society” with a history of the ideological breakdowns of the 20th century and also a discreet settling of accounts with the theatre of the bygone century. In Jarocki, one of the protagonists – Stomil – changes from an eccentric avant-garde artist into a conceptualist director who walked hand-in-hand with Kantor, Swinarski, Grotowski, Szajna, Grzegorzewski, and finally with Jarocki himself.

Artur – the young, conservative rebel – assumes the repulsive form of a member of the phalanx of politicians, pragmatist-technocrats, who believe they have acquired knowledge of the mechanisms of controlling “the uneducated rabble”. It is only chance that decides which of the rightist parties they are going to choose. Jarocki knows only too well that the wisdom of the well-read Tango comes to the floor whenever there is something important in the reality that needs naming. Therefore, the director speaks straight about what violence and power are today, and why ideologists lose. In the final scene, as always in this drama, two males – Eugeniusz and Edek – dance La Cumparsita. It is usually in this scene that the answer to the question what Tango means today is vested. After all, it is one of the most powerful image-metaphors in the history of Polish theatre. It usually has a conservative dancing with a despot, while in Jarocki, two opportunist forces meet, with either dancer pondering how to exploit the other. The cynical mentor has possibly found an ideal disciple, a subcontractor to ano-ther conservative revolution. Jarocki puts forth a hypothesis that of this alliance something will again be born in Poland.

Jess had a spare ticket to see Doug Stanhope and I had nothing to do, so I went with her. He wasn't quite my cup of tea (he is very vulgar), but it was fun taking photo and hanging with friends anyway.

Comedy (October 2010)

This event will bring together activists and comedians to discuss the ways in which comedy can push forward agendas such as #metoo and contemporary women’s rights movements, and how this effort can translate into meaningful change in women’s lives. The event will also showcase the work of UN Women and Mythos Labs in countering violent extremist recruitment narratives—and their understandings of gender—through comedy. It features a comedy set by renown comedian and actress Aparna Nancherla.

In early 2018, UN Women partnered with Mythos Labs to produce a series of comedy videos to counter the messaging of terrorist groups in the Asia region. Working with female comedians in South Asia and South-East Asia, these sketches challenge the narratives used by violent extremist groups and counter extremist ideology in the online space. While this work was originally piloted to prevent and counter violent extremism, the implications go far beyond this realm. Comedy can and is being used to promote broader themes of women’s empowerment and gender equality, by not just making us laugh, but by challenging stereotypes with a broad and engaged audience.

This project is part of UN Women’s Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities programme, which is funded by the Government of Japan. This programme works in the Asia Pacific region to challenge the gendered dynamics of violent extremism and reverse its growing trend, through prioritizing women’s rights, empowerment, participation and leadership—in national decision-making and at the community level.

See the "Nothing You Ever Wanted to Know About Wheezy Waiter" video

It's been a year since my proverbial head bump on the bathroom sink causing a vision of the flux capacitor (a la Doc of Back to the Future). Only my head bump was a day with no customers at the restaurant and my flux capacitor was Wheezy Waiter.Special thanks to Ze Frank, Ryan Wolff, Andy Garfield (my boss at my editing job back in Madison), Ashleigh (for introducing me to Ze Frank) and all of you.WARNING: movie may contain scenes too genuine for some viewers.
