One of the handmade wooden Christmas toys.

www.bridgetdavey.com/blog/2015/12/striezelmarkt-in-dresden

The Dresdner Striezelmark is one of Germany's oldest documented Christmas markets and also one of it's best. Founded as a one-day market in 1434, it celebrated its 580th anniversary in 2014.

This market was first mentioned in 1434, under Friedrich II, a King of Saxony, when it was held the Monday before Christmas on the Altmarkt square. Originally, the a one-day market was here to provide the citizens of Dresden with the meat for the Christmas meal after the pre-Christmas period of fasting.

Over the centuries the Striezelmarkt has developed into a huge event with 250 stands, taking up a large part of Dresden city centre and lasting throughout the Advent period until Christmas Eve. Today the Striezelmarkt attracts 3 million visitors a year from all over the world.

The word Striezelmarkt comes from Strüzel or Stroczel, which was the name of a type of cake sold at the market, now famous as Stollen or Christstollen, a light airy fruitcake. The real Dresden Stollen, however, is produced in the city and distinguished by a special seal depicting the city's famous king, August the Strong.

Today the most famous features of Dresden Striezelmarkt are the world's largest usable Christmas arch with a breadth of 13.5 metres and a height of more than 5 metres and the 14-metre high Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid.

Famous is the Pflaumentoffel, a chimney sweep's boy

Apart from the famous Stollen, other specialities originate from Dresden and were originally sold at the Striezelmarkt. Made of prunes, these little figures are really decorations, although they can be eaten after Christmas.

Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen

Pfefferkuchen literally means "pepper cake": the word "pepper" was used to mean any new foreign spice. The gingerbread sold at the Striezelmarkt comes from Pulsnitz, a town about 50 km from Dresden; it was first mentioned as a speciality from Pulsnitz in a decree issued in 1558 allowing bakers to produce it there. Pfefferkuchen are usually filled with marmalade or jam and covered with chocolate. Unlike gingerbread from other countries, the dough does not usually contain any fat, or indeed ginger, but instead nutmeg, cinnamon, ground cloves and allspice, which are added after the dough has been left up to 6 months to mature.

Glühwein or Mulled Wine

One very well-loved tradition on a cold December night in Dresden is drinking steaming mugs of mulled wine at the Striezelmarkt. The hot red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon is served in specially decorated mugs.

IGLESIA SUPERIOR.-

Unedited mobile phone cam shot of myself reflected in a puddle in Amsterdam. Taken with the timer of my C905 phone. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

Lately I've been using my Panasonic camera a lot more than my mobile phone, and to make up for that and get back to my roots, here's a puddle self reflection, the new Master class of wicked puddle play, a self portrait reflected in water, shot without any external assistance, wicked 2010 style baby...if you want to try this at home, turn on the timer of your mobile/cam, put it on the ground, run to the other side of the puddle, and wait for it :D

Don't forget, every Saturday in October I will be at the 'ABC Treehouse' as the Artist in Residency of the 'MultiCulti' exhibition, from 1-6 PM, together with the lovely Miss Monyart. Come and hang out with us in the Voetboogstraat 11. Opening hours in general are Fridays – Sundays, 1PM-6PM, free entry, free coffee :)

I've made a couple of wicked reflection movies of this puddle too, check them out on my YouTube page!

Hundreds turn out for Kaiserslautern Special Olympics

Check us out on Facebook!

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Crowds of spectators cheered as MeeHee Ashe and fellow Special Olympics athletes sprinted down the 50-meter track during the annual games held in Enkenbach-Alsenborn.

For those 22 seconds, as she ran under sunny skies beside German and American athletes, Ashe, 27, felt happy, she said. Over the past few weeks, she has been training and preparing herself for the May 5 event – as she has done for more than two decades.

“I like to run,” Ashe said. “I forget about some things and just do it.”

The spring games, sponsored by U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, included tennis, track & field, badminton, soccer, basketball and volleyball. They have been held in Kaiserslautern Military Community for 28 years – the past 14 years at the German police academy, whose officers also supported the event. In all, more than 800 German and American athletes took part. They were supported by roughly 1,300 volunteers.

Lorelai Browning, 17, a Vilseck High School student carried the Olympic torch into the arena. Her parents, Sgt. 1st Class Henry Browning and his wife Lorenna, watched with pride.

“It’s such an honor for her.” Lorenna Browning said. “We’re so excited.”

Everyone who took part is a winner, said Lt. Col Kevin Hutchison, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, during his opening remarks.

“These games are intended to help the athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image that carries over into the classroom, home, job and community,” Hutchison said. “It also fosters friendships between volunteers and athletes and provides a forum for better understanding of adults and children with intellectual disabilities.”

Nearby, Spc. Brad Abraham, 20, of Turlock, Calif., handed 10-year-old Aaron Evans a bottle of water as the Ramstein Intermediate School student prepared for his sprint. Abraham was among hundreds of Kaiserslautern Soldiers and Airmen who volunteered to support the event.

“In the Army, helping people is part of what we do,” Abraham said. “It’s fun, when you get into it.”

Evans darted down the dusty track, flanked by other children who laughed and smiled as they crossed the finish line. Afterward, Abraham pinned a yellow ribbon to Evans’s blue Special Olympics t-shirt.

“I enjoy seeing kids enjoying this,” Abraham said. “If they’re having fun, then we’re having fun.”

The event marked the second year volunteering for Senior Airman James Carlisle, 29, and engineering assistant from Pascagoula, Miss., who serves with the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. He served as a buddy for Dominik Keller, a seven-year-old Kaiserslautern athlete. Carlisle noticed that Keller and other young athletes were not so interested in “hearing all the talk in the beginning,” he said.

“They knew what they wanted when they got here. The first thing out of their mouth was ‘Fussball’ – they wanted to play soccer,” Carlisle said. “They look forward to this all year. It’s really exciting.”

Kids got plastic firefighters’ hats and clambered into U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern fire trucks on display. Nearby, participants made arts and crafts projects and hitched rides on a mini-train.

Garrison volunteers sweated over huge grills, barbequing hundreds of hot dogs and hamburgers.

The final sporting event was a friendly soccer match between German and American athletes. Germany won, 8-0. Then, crowds applauded as Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup led fellow senior enlisted leaders from Kaiserslautern’s Army and Air Force units in the presentation of medallions to athletes.

Ashe climbed the pedestal and slightly bowed to receive her medal, to the cheers of her parents, Charlie and Nelda, plus hundreds of other people crowding the grandstands. Afterward, athletes, volunteers and spectators joined hands in a huge circle and sang “We Are The World.”

“It feels happy inside,” Ashe said. “It’s about winning and it’s not about losing. It’s about having fun.”

DATOS HISTORICOS

Ask me any questions! :)

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic odyssey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.

ALL THE BEST on your Epic Hero's Odyssey from Johnny Ranger McCoy!

Been busy traveling and shooting landscapes and working on my books The Golden Hero's Odyssey about the golden rectangle and divine proportion I use in a lot of my compositions! The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

I was in the ROTC at the University of Houston and commissioned as a 2nd LT in the U. S. Army when I graduated. In March, 1966 I went on active duty stationed at the home of the Transportation Corps, Ft. Eustis, Virginia. How I got there and then my assignments going forward is an interesting story. I was originally assigned to be in the Corps of Engineers. After writing several letters explaining my interest and employment in the field of transportation, specifically railroading, the Army reassigned me to the Transportation Corps. Once at Ft. Eustis I was able to be assigned as a railroad detachment commander. My unit was the 525th Rail Detachment and we were attached to the last active railroad battalion in the Army - the 714th TBROS&DE (Transportation Battalion Operating Steam and Diesel Electric). I took the 525h to Viet Nam where our job was to coordinate rail transportation movements from the Port of Saigon to Long Binh, Bien Hoa Airbase, Dian (base camp of the 1st Infantry Division) and Xuan Loc (base camp of the 11th Armored Cavalry). All the consignees received construction materials and a variety of other commodities.

When my Viet Nam tour was completed I returned to Ft. Eustis as the Executive Officer of B Company (Maintenance) of the 714th until I was discharged from active duty.

Camp Humphreys welcomes new commander

By Cpl. Han, Jae-ho

USAG Humphreys Public Affairs

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Soldiers, civilians and Family members welcomed the United States Army Garrison Humphreys' new commander, Col. Darin S. Conkright, during a ceremony, here, July 11.

Conkright replaces Col. Joseph P. Moore, who is retiring from the United States Army after 27 years of distinguished service.

Before the change of command, in a separate ceremony, Moore was presented with the Legion of Merit by Debra D. Zedalis, the Pacific Region director of Installation Management Command. His wife, Molly, received three awards: the 8th United States Army Helping Hands Award; the Dr. Mary E. Walker Award; and the Commander’s Award for Public Service.

During the ceremony, Moore expressed his appreciation to his family, fellow Soldiers, the community, Korean guests and the United States Army.

“To our guests from nearby towns, our Korean military colleagues, and our Korean employees, I extend special thanks for the friendship and hospitality you have extended to me over the past four years,” he said. “I leave my command and my Army career with a deep gratitude for the opportunities they have provided.”

Zedalis congratulated Moore on his success as the garrison commander.

“Under his leadership, Humphreys has transformed from an installation populated primarily by single and unaccompanied Soldiers, on one-year assignments, to an installation where many more military Families live for two and three-year tours,” Zedalis said. “He also has led the single largest construction program in the Department of Defense, and the garrison’s support of the 8th United States Army and all tenant units has been nothing short of top notch.”

Zedalis also extended a welcome to the incoming commander and his Family.

“You are inheriting a great garrison team that will support you one hundred percent,” she said. “I know you will find your new assignment both professionally rewarding and personally enriching.”

Conkright expressed his enthusiasm as a new commander.

“I look forward to working with each and every one of you to ensure Camp Humphreys continues to be a great place to live, work and serve,” he said.

Conkright joined the Army in 1989, and has had a number of duty assignments at Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Washington DC, and in Europe. At Fort Campbell, he commanded ODA 522 and served as the Battalion Assistant S-3. In Washington DC, he served as an assignments officer in the US Army PERSCOM’s Special Management Division. His most recent assignment was the Chief of Staff for the NATO Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ) in Mons, Belgium.

He received a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps commission and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky. His advanced education includes a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters in Healthcare Management. Conkright is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and his awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His badges include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Special Forces Tab, the Ranger Tab, and the Master Parachutist Badge.

Fojas 105 f. a 109 V.
