Three lovely visitors came but I only got this shot of one...They came to eat the spillage from feeding a hen and her chickens...

This old glass prism was one of two given to my brother and I as children by our father, something he had been given by his father. They were of a type used in lighthouses to reflect the light of the lamp, but when and where they were used, I do not know. Of the two, this is the only survivor, what become of the other I don't know? I passed this one to my daughter some years ago and today we were just playing around with it to get a few photos of the light refraction.

A double rainbow so bright and vivid that it takes your breath away in an area already saturated by beauty. As this rainbow merged from the ether, it was lightly drizzling.

Taken on the road that drops down to Dovedale and Ilam.

A feng shui crystal in front of the window pane. The sun is shining outside, the crystal is splitting the light and the room is filled with moving rainbow shapes.

Reykjavik, Iceland - July 10, 2023: Famous Rainbow Street in Iceland's capital of Reykjavik. Used as a sign of support for diversity by the city and Reykjavik Pride

A rainbow (or perhaps the Bifrost?) seems to land next to the granite outcrop of Haytor Rocks on Dartmoor. A deceptively calm looking scene, captured from the nearby Bonehill Rocks as I tried to avoid being soaked and / or knocked-off my feet by some stormy autumn weather. Devon, UK, 29-Oct-2023.

Reykjvik, Iceland - July 10, 2023: Very busy pedestrain street of the Rainbow Road in the capital city of Iceland on a sunny summer day

Maybe a bit too close, but the only thing I did to this photo was crop it...

These colours have NOT been generated in Photoshop! I stumbled upon the idea by chance when changing a CD in my player. I noticed how it caught the light, and one idea led to another, with this the final result! How did I do it? This was taken in my garage with the main door open just a few inches above the ground to allow a small amount of natural light to hit the CDs.

Somewhere over the rainbow- way

up high

in the land

that I heard of once

Once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow- skies

are blue

and the dreams

that you dare to dream

really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star

and wake up

where the clouds are far behind me

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

away above the chimney tops

that's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow

skies are blue

and the dreams...that you dare to dream

really do come true

If happy little bluebirds fly

above the rainbow, why

Oh, why can't I?

For [http://www.flickr.com/photos/jainbow] as she always brings rays of sunshine into flickrland with her photos and videos.

i had this shot in mind now for about 6 months. there where a few problems i didn't anticipate though. firstly getting an umbrella suitably funky was not an easy task , then waiting for a sunny day and a suitable location but the main thing i failed to considered was the possibility of it smacking me in the head . which it did :(

Explore # 210 - August 1, 2009

WOW this is my 100th image that has made it to Explore!

Finding myself in Nottingham on the day the Pride parade took to the streets I found the city centre to be packed with people, so many it was virtually impossible to find space to photograph anyone. At one point two girls passed me and I noticed the spectacular glasses one was wearing so dived in to see if I could photograph her for the stranger project.

With so many people bustling around us we managed to squeeze into a shop doorway and it gave me just enough room to take a couple of pictures. I asked Holly to hold her flag up because I thought it would be a great backdrop and it also concealed the items on display in the window. I would have preferred a location without direct sunlight but being in such a packed area it was either take the image where you were or not at all.

I asked Holly how long it had taken to apply her face make-up and she said about one hour. I particular liked how well she’d matched the colours to those of her glasses.

Holly had just begun her summer break but would begin studying engineering when she resumed her education in the autumn. Holly told me she makes a bit of money selling Rubik’s Cubes. In her spare-time she enjoys hanging around with her friends.

I asked Holly who her first star crush had been on and she said Sharpay Evans (actress Ashley Tisdale) in High School Musical films.

Holly told me the one thing she couldn’t live without was Tumblr.

Thank-you so much for agreeing to be photographed for my stranger project Holly, and I hope you like your portrait.

This picture is #154 in the 100 Strangers project, yes, I’m doing a second 100. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

The snow is gone and now it's just dark, dull, wet and boring, so decided, again, to go through my library to find something to cheer me up.. Found this and just really want to go back right now! I need a holiday, a break from the daily chores and routines... That was a nice holiday... Only 5 months to go... Keep smiling folks!

Chasing Rainbows, Dartmoor, Devon by photographer Helen Duvall

Chasing rainbows is a delightful pastime on Dartmoor. The divine grace of a rainbow captivates the viewer with a silent mistique that can only ever last for a matter of minutes. To catch on camera the spirit of one of these radiant apparitions is always a pleasing achievement, to know that the moment is saved to be enjoyed at oneâs leisure, never to be lost.

A rainbow is a meteorological occurance caused by reflection; refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets to form a spectrum of light in the form of a multicoloured circular arc in the sky. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun. Rainbows can be full circles. However, the viewer usually sees an arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground, and centered on a line from the sun to the eye of the observer. In a primary rainbow the outer band of the arc is red and the inner band is violet. This rainbow is caused by light being refracted when entering a droplet of wate, then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it. In a double rainbow, a second arc appears outside the primary arc. In the second arc the light is reflected twice on the inside of the droplet before leaving it. The order of colours are therefore reversed, with red on the inner band of the arc.

'Fish' is the Year 6 topic for this term. All Year 6 classes made fish by blowing up a balloon, covering in paper mache, adding fins and eyes, then painting. This is the display in Room 6 which is a classroom I am attached to.

The Rainbow was tired and had to sleep, it found a lake and a small hill upon which to rest its curves, the clouds are its escort and have to stay until the rainbow can rise again, sparkling brilliant, like the sun. I sent the swans to greet it and say hello, the emotional overtone is definitely, mellow!
