This heater I pass at least twice a day as it's in my stairway. This time it was lit by beautiful side light caused by the reflected Western sun.

Our Lady of Tournai is the cathedral of the Diocese of Tournai. It is the only religious building in Belgium that has been built as a cathedral. A masterpiece of Scaldian Gothic, this monument is, by the harmonious combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, by its size and its characteristic architecture, one of the most impressive witnesses of Western art. It is part of the major heritage of Wallonia and has been listed since 2000 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

77 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

The BC Collateral and Loan Buildings at 77 East Hastings Street are comprised of two masonry buildings constructed in 1902: a two-storey building on the east (lot 19, modified c.1934) and a three-storey masonry building on the west (lot 20). Extending off the facade of the three-storey building is a large neon sign 'LOANS/SELLS' with a rotating '77/BC COLLATERAL' disc. The buildings are located on the north side of East Hastings Street in Vancouver's downtown east side.

Heritage Value:

The BC Collateral and Loan Buildings are of heritage value to the downtown east side for the business' continuous local entrepreneurship for nearly 90 years. They are also valued as examples of commercial buildings that have been adapted to continuously suit the needs of one business.

Since 1918, the business has provided credit to customers at this location. Now commonly known as a pawnshop, the business provides small loans mostly to lower income residents of the downtown east side. The fact that a business has sustained itself through numerous economic cycles for so long is rare for a business in this area.

The buildings' alterations and expansions are examples of how buildings were adapted to suit the needs of a growing business. This business started in the two-storey building (lot 19) and expanded into the adjacent three-storey building (lot 20) in the 1960s.

The alterations are also important to the history of the buildings because they reflect how Vancouver was changing both commercially and physically in the twentieth century. By 1934, the façade of the two-storey building had been renovated to an Art Deco appearance to reflect the contemporary aesthetic of the day, and by the 1970s, the rotating neon sign was mounted on the façade of the three-storey building.

Character-Defining Elements:

The character-defining elements of the two BC Collateral and Loan Buildings include:

- along with the adjacent building in a prominent corner location at 333 Columbia Street, they form a contiguous group of brick masonry buildings;

- varied height of two and three storeys;

- brick with stone window sills and lintels;

- contiguous storefront configuration with the extant recessed entryway in the two-storey building, with its mosaic tiles 'B.C. Collateral, Est. 1900';

- the two-storey building's Art Deco chevron grills in the upper floor windows and painted brick, evidence of the 1930's era renovation;

- the prominent array of double-sided, rotating neon signs extending out from the three-storey building, consisting of (from top to bottom): a red, ovalized address sign, with face texts ''77' and 'BC COLLATERAL', a blue, vertical blade sign, with face texts 'LOANS' and 'SELLS', a red bar sign, with face texts 'EVERYTHING' and 'OR ANYTHING;'

- the original elements of the three-storey building, including paired tall double hung wood windows, stone sills and flat lintels, and subtle corbelling at the parapet.

During WW2 many railings were scrapped and reused to make armaments. Not always replaced.

This is the corpse of an almost-fully formed maggot.

The heat and evaporated chemicals in the darkroom I built three months ago caused a casualty. Some sort of skink lived in the bathroom disappeared. Couple of weeks after that the air in the bathroom became very decayed. All the successfully-formed maggots reigned flying all over the house. The maggots kept falling down from the ceiling (extractor holes) to my enlarger base, I squished some of them --- ahh, love the feeling.

This fly is still half a maggot --- it perished before it can fly, no flying lesson for this little fella :-)

mi nascondo alla realtà coprendomi di rullini.. purtroppo sembra non funzionare.. i rulli son meno sensibili di quanto pensassi e non si sono lasciati impressionare dalla mia psicopatia..

This is my first attempt at a slideshow. This is still a work in progress for me. There are lots of technical issues I still have to work out. Having said that, I think slideshows like this can at times rise above single images as well as videos as an art form.

In 2011 one of the stricter smoke-free laws in the world has come into effect in Spain. It prohibits smoking in any public space, but the catering trades fear that it can harm their businesses. En 2011 ha entrado en vigor en España una de las leyes antitabaco más estrictas del mundo, que prohibe fumar en cualquier espacio público, pero los hosteleros temen que esto pueda perjudicar a sus negocios.

Especially in harsher-than-average winters such as the current 2022-2023 year, many Yellowstone bison migrate to lower, more protected areas where snow is not deep (or sometimes, not persistently present, as in these photos) making it easier to find food. These bison are in an area encompassing the northern-most section of the national park (where hunting is never permitted) and the southern reaches of Custer-Gallatin National Forest (where hunting is permitted under specific conditions).

Each winter, the park, the Forest Service, and Montana Wildlife, Fish and Game collaborate to allow specific indigenous tribes and a small number of non-tribal hunters to harvest a limited number of bison. The hunt is part of a policy to keep a lid on the population of Yellowstone bison. It is not without controversy though I do not object to allowing native people to hunt bison as has been their tradition for uncounted generations.

One of the most controversial aspects of this hunt is of course the risk of unintended/accidental injury to bison, other wildlife, and of course, to human life and property. In this instance, a bison calf (centered in the photo) has suffered a wound, possibly from a stray shot, to its left front fetlock. It was completely unable to bear weight on the leg. Living as a wild bison in Yellowstone with only three functional legs is not a long term proposition. If the poor thing doesn't die of infection first, it will be easy pickins' for predators that will doubtless notice its compromised condition. It's all part of the circle of life but nonetheless heart-rending to witness.

As I waited in my car while the last shots were fired, streams of bison headed past me back towards the park. They of course cannot understand where the park boundary is, but they knew where to head to get away from danger.

Another capture of the begonia flower which Linus found on the terrace, this time with Mandy, the mouse. The flower was collateral damage because I knocked it off with the garden hose when I watered the garden early this morning.

Built for a little contest over on MOCPages.
