Dirk Adams

the sensation of moving slowly back in time

Dirk Adams creates work in a variety of media including performance, sound, installation, and video. His work is concerned with language, memory, and culture, and frequently investigates current events, popular culture, and politics.

the sensation of moving slowly back in time is a presentation of objects, materials, and tools that have been created over the past four years in his yarden (yard/garden). The installation and performances in this show represent a point in his explorations of physical processes of materials and investigations into human consciousness, the slow mutative processes of evolution, and notions of meaning-making as they relate to cultural production and the idea of humans as brains in bodies in environments, which comes out of the field of embodied cognition.

Siberian Husky Breed Facts, Characteristics, Overview, Temperament, And Facts

Strong and compact, Siberian Huskies are excellent sled dogs. The medium-sized head is proportional to the rest of the pen, and the medium-sized nib, which has a distinct end, is in harmony with the rest of the pen. The nose of a dog will match the color of its fleece. Pigmentation varies depending on breed; in argentine, it’s black; in tan or black tykes; in bobby tykes, it’s liver; and in pure white tykes, it’s flesh. The medium-sized, round eyes may be any shade of blue, brown, amber, or a combination of these. Children may be born or with a combination of the two eye colors (bi-eyed). The triangular standing cognition are mounted high on the skull. Scissors suck because of the proximity of the teeth.

Reminiscence, 2017

frame by frame digital animation

Dimensions variable

Photographs are what we hold on to dearly for the confirmation they give us that something or someone really was there in our life. But photographs are not reliable in the preservation of memories.

Reminiscence (2017) is an animation that comments on the fragility of memory through a character’s exploration of a fading memory-world scattered with photographs. The work seeks to show how mentally reliving past events can distort and decay memories that we think are cemented in our minds, even with the assistance of photographs. Photographs within the world become ghosts of a memory that plague the character’s mind, withering away with frequent recall and time. The memory world the character enters becomes increasingly unstable the more time spent in it.

Reminiscence derives inspiration from theories of memory, cognition and films that depict these themes. It intertwines these ideas for a fuller understanding of how memory works. For the artist, it fuels the understanding and the beginning to move on from past memories.

About Isolation In Psychology

Isolation is a defence mechanism in psychoanalytic theory first proposed by Sigmund Freud. While related to repression the concept distinguishes itself in several ways. It is characterized as a mental process involving the creation of a gap between an unpleasant or threatening cognition, and other thoughts and feelings. By minimizing associative connections with other thoughts, the threatening cognition is remembered less often and is less likely to effect self-esteem or the self concept. Freud illustrated the concept with the example of a person beginning a train of thought and then pausing for a moment before continuing to a different subject. His theory stated that by inserting an interval the person was "letting it be understood symbolically that he will not allow his thoughts about that impression or activity to come into associative contact with other thoughts.”As a defense against harmful thoughts, isolation prevents the self from allowing these cognitions to become recurrent and possibly damaging to the self-concept.

I believe this diagram more and more. I used to argue that the Japanese also have an independent self in the visual domain, and I still do to an extent. It should be noted that there is a line around the Japanese self but it is dotted.

The Japanese do also have an awareness of their socially separate individuality but it is

1) More blurred, dotted

2) Is often conditioned by the "interdependent" awareness that they are a self for someone else.

3) But at the same time, since they have in their hearts, an extra eye in the sky, or on their ceiling -- a visual generalised other -- they do also to an extent believe in their visual selves as a non-relational, independent entity. In other words, the Japanese are also enslaved by self-love, and not fully enlightened.

cologne - 03.09.2013

Back in Cologne I must readjust my whole cognition. I must admit that it was really easy to find my daily picture. Everything was new, everything was interesting and therefore my senses worked very well. Thats why I took this picture today. The feathery mood of the last four weeks are behind me. Now its going to be work and of course the fight against the daily tunnel vision... We'll see. Thanks folks for following my stream on flickr, facebook or tumbler.

I've been doing this whole-brain neurofeedback or brain biofeedback since mid-April and have been blogging on it. Recently, I've improved enough in energy and cognition to start adding images to illustrate it. This is part of the data my trainer watches as I'm doing it. The top line represents the size of the picture of the DVD playing that my brain controls. 100 is full screen, 0 is no picture visible. The bottom coloured lines are all the coherences and amplitudes of the brainwaves, with the straight line being the pre-set threshold. Anything above the threshold causes the picture to shrink (to see a description of the procedure, see jeejeebhoy.ca/2013/04/23/loreta-neurofeedback-day-one/).

I used this image to illustrate my latest blog on LORETA at jeejeebhoy.ca/2013/07/18/loreta-14-dreaming-of-better-bra...
