The Achenseebahn is a 1metre gauge cog railway which runs for 6.8km from Jenbach in the Inn Valley to the shores of the Achensee Lake. It rises 440metres, most of it within the first 4 kilometres. Dating from 1889, it is the oldest steam operated cog railway in the world. The railway has 4 locomotives. Here, loco no.2 "Hermann" is seen on the final approach to the lakeside terminus at Seespitze.

One Park Drive doesn't seem to have a nickname, but it reminds me of a cog or camshaft.

Enjoy a piece of B&W fine art, juxtaposing the horizontal lines of the horizon with the jagged circular shapes of . . . uh . . . who am I kidding - it's a very big cog.

Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it though ...

Big cog

Whenever I'm stuck for ideas at the weekend, a spontaneous trip to a stately home or park is always a good idea. This is at Painshill Park in Surrey, which has a stunning landscape and lots of hidden buildings and bridges, definitely worth a visit!

The cog railway is a railway traction system used when the slope of the track exceeds the capacity of adhesion of natural resources used to tow the trains - locomotives - that is necessary to ensure or improve braking.

Cogs on a wall .. these are just not any old cogs but the wooden masters or patterns as they are referred to in casting or foundry work . Yes what you see are all made from wood , the first in the process of making the same in metal is to make one in wood , a pattern , a male , then a female is constructed as a mould , to pour the molten metal into to create the finished product , a metal cog for a machine in industry .

This is the traditional way , now a days these items are Printed , built up with minuscule layers of wax in the CAD process . Computer Aided Design .. the creation process , changes in time .

A wet and muddy morning and a few mills. An early start with a short drive to explore with Martyn, Camerashy - uk and MkWil.

Tone Mills is a complete water-powered cloth finishing works, established by the Fox Brothers and Co at the confluence of the River Tone and the Back Stream and dates from 1830. The remains of the water wheel remain in-situ and so too do all the line shafting and gearing. The Mill later had an electric motor installed to supplement the water-wheel during times of drought, although the water wheel continued to be used for many decades after. Put simply the mill comprises of a number of key areas to accommodate the various stages of production: A Fulling area, where wet cloth was dried, scoured, cleaned and milled to the desired finish. A dying room, adjacent to the fulling area which specialised in producing an indigo colouring. Reservoirs and Sluice gates, to manage the flow of water into the wheel chamber. The wheel chamber and a later power house.

The associated machinery for all the stages of production are all in-situ, making it an industrial archaeologists paradise.

The works finally closed in 2000 and production was moved to a more contemporary location. The buildings and machinery are Grade II* listed.

¡Dónde está la primavera!

¡En la flor que está ya hecha,

o en el botón que florece,

en la sombra, sin belleza,

esperando que aparezcan

los colores y las hojas

y vuelen cual mariposas

por los campos y las mentes!

¡Dónde está la primavera,

si no refrescas el cielo

y le pones nubes nuevas

que levanten los colores

que arranca la sementera!

¡Dónde está la primavera,

que yo he salido a cogerla!

We stayed for 2 nights in St Wolfgang in Austria, with the hope of using the little cog railway to take us to the top of the Schafberg mountain. Yet again, we were very lucky with the weather - it was raining when we arrived in St Wolfgang but the next day was warm and sunny. The railway, opened in 1893, runs from beside the lake to the top of the Schafberg (1,783 m) gaining around 1,200 metres. The views from the top are stunning.

There are a couple of shots of the trains in the comment below. These are the more modern, oil-fired steam engines, built in the 1990s. The original coal-fired engines from the 1890s still run but only on a limited number of dates.

Since my last visit, the Cog Railroad has been completely rebuilt. New trains were purchased and the older models were rebuilt. The station areas at each end were also rebuilt.

The narrator on the train said it takes a ton of coal to get to the top and the fireman shovels right handed at a rate of 3 scoops per 20 sec. His left hand opens and closes the fire box door.
