The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility hosted Women in Computing's "Introduce Your Daughter to Code" for the second time on June 16, giving daughters of staff members at ORNL a chance to engage in fun programming activities and code on the Cray XK7 Titan supercomputer. This year, 25 girls ages 10 to 18 participated in the labwide event.
OLCF User Support Specialist Suzanne Parete-Koon kicked off the event with an introduction to parallel computing and Titan before ORNL intern Dasha Herrmannova and ORNL postdoctoral research associate Anne Berres walked the girls through the basics of coding in Python.
Katie Schuman, a Liane Russell Distinguished Early Career Fellow, helped the girls use a program called fractalName to generate colored fractals—repeating patterns that form shapes—based on their names and ages. The fractals were displayed on the visualization wall in the Exploratory Visualization Environment for Research in Science and Technology, or EVEREST. The girls also used Schuman's Birthday Pi code to find their birthdays in the first 100,000 digits of the number pi.
"It was really exciting to see the girls' enthusiasm and curiosity when they were coding," Katie says. "Seeing them already thinking creatively about the code is the most rewarding thing to me."
After they coded on the leadership-class machine, the girls explored the interactive Tiny Titan, which features eight Raspberry Pi processors and provides a visual simulation of a liquid in space. Tiny Titan demonstrates how additional nodes in a compute system can increase the speed of a simulation.
Katie says the feedback WiC continues to receive about the event will inform future coding activities. "Some of the parents have already said the girls wanted to download everything and keep playing with the code when they got home," she says. "There is already a desire for the next phase. We will definitely continue running the same curriculum and possibly expand it in the future."
The following staff members contributed to "Introduce Your Daughter to Code:" Berres, Harken, Herrmannova, Parete-Koon, Schuman, Megan Bradley, Kate Carter, Amy Coen, Katherine Engstrom, Megan Fielden, Shang Gao and Ashley Nguyen.
On saturday 24th june we woke up, had breakfast and got ourselves ready. Then we marched to our target of the day: the OBA coal terminal of the Amsterdam harbour.

Substratum: on thallus and podetia of Cladonia cf. pocillum, soil and mosses.
Place: Lower Trenta valley, between villages Soča and Trenta, right bank of river Soča, Na melu place near Strgulc, Soča 46 abandoned farm house, East Julian Alps, Posočje, Slovenia EC.
Comment: Diploschistes muscorum is an interesting, cosmopolitan lichen living on ground. When young it parasitizes other lichens of Cladonia pyxidata group (Wirth 1995), especially Cladonia rangiformis and Cladonia pocillum (Dobson 2005). In this observation the host seems to be Cladonia pocillum. It gradually incorporates the algae of the host in its own thallus (Brodo 2001) and thus kill it. When mature it becomes free-living on mosses and ground without help of parasitism. It can grow to considerable sizes. This observation shows small, young specimens, max a few cm in diameter. Picture 3 shows a young specimen just becoming fertile, where lowest, outer squamules of the host are still alive and green. Picture 5c shows a podetium of the host thinly overgrown with Diploschistes muscorum thallus. Picture 2 shows an older specimen where no parts of the host can be seen directly, however, the shape of the thallus still resembles to some extent original shape of the Cladonia squamules. Later there is no more resemblance on Cladonia.
Growing scattered. Several specimens found in the vicinity. Chemical reaction on thallus K-. Photographed in damp conditions.

About Tabin Wildlife Reserve
Created in the year 1984, Tabin has been declared a Wildlife Reserve primarily on account of the large number of animals inhabiting its forests, some of which are highly endangered. The three largest mammals of Sabah, namely Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Sumatran Rhinoceros and Tembadau are all found within the reserve; nine species of primate are present, as well as three species of cats all of which are on the protected wildlife list. Of bird species, 42 families representing 220 species have been recorded. One of the highlights of Tabin being the active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes, attracting frequent visits by wildlife for their mineral intake and present an ideal platform for wildlife observation and bird-watching.
The Wildlife Department of Sabah is the custodian of the animals in the reserve while the Forestry Department of Sabah is responsible for the tress in Tabin. The reserve is covered mainly with lowland dipterocarp forest.
Since the availability of accommodation provided by Tabin Wildlife Resort in 2004, Tabin Wildlife Reserve has gained popularity to be one of the best places in Sabah to observe the rich bio-diversity of nature and to part-take in nature-base activities. Amongst the popular things-to-do in Tabin are jungle-trekking, night safari, night walk, wildlife-spotting, bird-watching and rainforest education.
Tabin Wildlife Reserve is located in the eastern part of Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. The reserve comprises a rectangular area of approximately 122,539 hectare in the centre of the Dent Peninsula, north-east of Lahad Datu town, south of the lower reaches of the Segama River and north of the Silabukan Forest Reserve.
