Display of food on sale at the grocery store today. According to Naomi, this is a seafood specialty of Hokkaido and are the reproductive parts of male codfish. They are popular and used for soup and sushi. (Brains would almost be better.) I have never eaten any - Naomi says they're vile. So, with that bit of advice, I shall not eat any.
Edelfischplatte a la Nautilus- Variation von gebratenen Edelfischen, garniert mit Flusskrebsen und gruenen Muscheln, dazu junges Gemuese und Herzoginkartoffeln; EUR 17,95 per person.
It is quite surprising how difficult it is to get some decent (and fresh) fish on the island of Ruegen. Thank god the Nautilus, a hotel and restaurant combination with almost magical ambiente, offered this platter. You can see salmon, codfish and halibut, grilled a little too long, probably selfmade pommes duchesse and some ordinary veggies. Overall ok.

Unloading the codfish into the factory for cleaning. The basket of fish is hauled up to the second floor. These must be too small to market.
An interesting photo. The lady seems to be running to the fish. Is there something wrong with her foot? No one else seems to be interested in these fish. Does she have first choice of the discarded fish? Does she have a sick or dead fisherman husband? Does she have first choice because she is handicapped? A very strained look on her face.

Codfish balls are Portuguese in origin (and over there they're shaped differently; if you go to a Portuguese restaurant/bar in Rio, you'll see that they're not round). But, like pizza in the U.S., they were so heartily adopted that they became Brazilian food. Also found anywhere cold beer is served
