This closeup shows the 'dew' secreting hairs on the leaves of the forked sundew, ready to snare insects to provide the nutrients that the siol they grow in is too poor to provide.

Photos from a night a Codfish Hollow with performances by Pieta Brown and the Taken, Chastity Brown, and Jodie McGill and Fulklort. If it's been said once it's been said a thousand times ... Codfish is one of the most unique concert venues in the world, attracting top acts to a barn surrounded by corn. These photos are part of my on-going project At the Bottom of the Driftless.
Here is Bela Bacalhau, my codfish project as she looks today. This is going to be my contribution to the codfish auction for the Marblehead Art Association. (Fifty codfish, decorated by fifty area artists, will be on display in downtown Marblehead and then auctioned off.) Today I finished drawing in the design, which is inspired by blue and white Portuguese tiles (azulejos) that I have seen on trips to Portugal. I had already tried out my design by drawing it "life size" on paper (posted here April 9, 2016 ) Yesterday I drew in the basic grid (the shapes of the tiles) on the wooden cutout, and it took a lot of measuring and looking to get the lines as straight as possible. Today I added the rest of the design, still measuring, checking, putting Bela on the wall and photographing her to make sure the lines remained straight and that the design will look balanced. I also participated in this event last year, and if you like, you can see what I made if you follow this link: www.flickr.com/photos/randiart/17469011928/
These tiny delicate moths are stunningly beautiful in their intricacy and delicacy. This individual has alighted on a rimu leaf but I think the larvae are known to feed on other species such as five finger (pseudopanax colensoi).

Here is Rosa, my decorated wooden codfish, as she looks tonight. I am doing this for the annual Cod Auction, to benefit Marblehead Festival of Art. Some 50 area artists are given codfish cutouts to decorate; they are displayed in Marblehead and then auctioned off online to benefit Marblehead Festival of Art. I named my fish Rosa because I am decorating her with lattice and "beach roses", also known as "rosa rugosa". Tonight I started outlining the design with Sharpie pens. As I added the ink, I made changes, mostly simplifying the leaves so that everything would fit. You can see some of what I changed because a lot of the pencil marks remain, but they will be covered up as I add paint. (The white background is just primer.) I am already quite fond of Rosa, and I hope she will find a good home. . .
