Primaeval female principle of the Aztecs. Aspect of Omecihuatl

This pocket-size Bible was created around the middle of the thirteenth century in England. It contains the Vulgate text of the Old and New Testaments, arranged in order and divided into chapters. Such Bibles, designed for individual rather than institutional use, began to be created on a large scale during the thirteenth century, especially in Paris. This manuscript is illuminated with a large number of small historiated initials, and also includes a somewhat later image of the Three Living and the Three Dead, a popular scene based on a French poem of the same century.

Tinted grisaille illustration

This allegorical text written in vernacular verse was inspired by Guillaume de Lorris's and Jean de Meun's Roman de la Rose. Composed in 1330-1332 CE by Guillaume de Digulleville with a second recension in 1355 CE, this text represents the earlier of the two versions. Produced in Northeast France in 1370 CE, the Walters' copy contains a frontispiece miniature with a portrait of the author, as well as eighty-three tinted grisaille illustrations. These illustrations are based on models consistent with contemporary thematic choices and contain abundant anecdotal detail, lending character to the text. As of spring 2014 the Institute for the Study of Textual History, Romance Languages in France has been gathering all reproductions of Digulleville's manuscripts. W. 141 is one of the few copies outside of France.

This Book of Hours was made ca. 1310-20, likely in Ghent. It was badly rebound with a sixteenth-century Flemish binding by Léon Gruel in Paris at the end of the nineteenth or early twentieth century, and the initials of Gruel and Engelmann are printed on the bookplate on the front pastedown. The manuscript lacks its calendar, and the text is incomplete and misbound. In the fourteenth century a prayer for Communion, written in French, was added at the end of the book. Initials in gold, blue and pink mark the divisions of the text. The manuscript is richly illuminated with drolleries; painted on the borders of each folio, they would have amused the reader with their playful animals, hybrids, and human figures.

2000 Codex, Contemporary Art Society, Economist Building

This German manuscript, written on paper ca. 1440, is a copy of Eberhard of Béthune's thirteenth-century grammatical poem Graecismus. The poem is here accompanied by the extensive gloss by Jean-Vincent Metulin, a scholar from Southern France. Having functioned as a textbook, the manuscript's condition suggests it was well-used by students eager to memorize and comprehend Béthune's ideas on the grammatical usage of Greek words.

The present codex, opening with a double-page decoration and the inscription giving the name of the author and the title of the work, contains four additional illuminated headpieces with the names of the individual books and 26 repainted miniatures.
